Tokyo Kawaii Musée in Harajuku lets you dress up for Halloween…in a kimono!

halloween4

Here in Japan, Halloween may be a relatively new tradition, and we haven’t gotten to the point of dressing in costume at school or work (at least not at normal jobs), but there’s no denying we’re quickly embracing the seasonal event, especially with special sweets and beverages. With Halloween-themed parades and parties becoming more and more common, finding an attractive and appropriately playful costume is something an increasing number of people are thinking about this time of year.

Well, if you want something original and eye-catching, then how about renting a Japanese kimono as a Halloween costume? Of corse, you won’t be wearing it like a regular kimono, though!

That’s right, you can get a kimono that’s been given some tweaks to make it an unconventional and totally kawaii  Halloween costume. For a limited time, kimono rental shop Tokyo Kawaii Musée in Tokyo’s Harajuku district is offering a Halloween kimono rental package that lets you wear a kimono in a completely original way for a radically cute look.

Yes, since it’s Halloween, they want you to look fabulously pop and glitzy, and what better way to do that than a colorful kimono arranged with a western and even gothic twist?  You wear the kimono tucked up to a very short length, combine it with a tutu skirt, add a fancy detachable collar and finish the look with knee-high socks and pumps for a costume that’s definitely based on a kimono but with plenty of Halloween flair — and we think we like it!

Tokyo Kawaii Musée usually offers a two-hour kimono rental package for 7,000 yen (US$58), but as a special Halloween promotion, they’ll also have a 30-minute rental package available for 2,000 yen ($17)  until October 31.  The rental comes with the necessary undergarments, obi belt, and sandals, and don’t worry, they’ll help you put on the kimono (as that can be a tricky affair even for Japanese people). You can additionally rent a wig and have your hair and make-up done if you want a more complete look.

▼ They also sell a variety of adorable accessories and ornaments that look perfect for Halloween!

So, those of you who’ll be in Japan this Halloween, if you don’t want to be just an ordinary princess and you’re interested in kimono, but feel like a traditional kimono get-up might be a bit formal, this could be the perfect unique costume for you. Plus, you’ll get to have the quintessential  Harajuku experience — walking the streets in an avant-garde and kawaii fashion that’s sure to get attention (and maybe eating a crepe or two in the process ). Now, that should make for a memorable Halloween experience. Happy Haunting!
