Pokémon’s Team Rocket officially begins real-life recruiting new members this month

Considering a career in Pokémon crime? This could be your big chance!

While some criminal organizations do their best to hide their activities, Pokémon’s Team Rocket is pretty brazen. Unlike other groups of thieves and con men, Team Rocket is happy to announce its presence with rehearsed speeches complete with choreography.

If that sort of pride and transparency appeals to you, you’ll be happy to know that later this month Team Rocket will be accepting applications for new members.

An announcement posted on Sagaprise, a promotional website for Saga Prefecture (on Japan’s southwestern island of Kyushu), says that urgent recruiting will officially open on October 25. No experience is necessary, and while Japanese law allows employers to set age limits for specific positions, the progressive Team Rocket says that applicants of all ages are welcome.

In its usual forceful way, Team Rocket has even taken over a portion of the Sagaprise website.

Click on the pink icon under Team Rocket mascot/operative/PC cushion Meowth, and the page undergoes a rocket-speed transition.

At the moment, it’s unclear exactly what Team Rocket’s new recruits will be doing. The page eventually shows a zoomed-in image of the Meowth hot air balloon that was spotted at thus year’s Pikachu Outbreak in Yokohama.

There’s also an illustration of a recruiting memo, with references to the Saga Prefectural Government Building and a pledge to “succeed at the Balloon Festa,” likely a reference to Saga’s annual international hot air balloon gathering, which will be held in November. There’s also a written goal of “get all visitors’ Pokémon.”

But while an appearance by the Meowth hot air balloon at the Balloon Festa seems likely, the memo also says that Team Rocket is aiming to “recruit 10 million members,” which is far more than the 820,000 residents Saga Prefecture currently has. Just what sort of undertaking could require such a massive labor force? Further details are promised here on the 25th, but in the meantime, if you’re looking for rocket-themed employment with a less overtly criminal-leaning organization, have we mentioned we’re hiring too?
