Live-action Princess Mononoke is coming to streaming as a live event, previews look amazing [Video]

Kabuki adaptation of Studio Ghibli anime masterpiece will be shown online, but you’ll need to mark the date on your calendar.

The live-action kabuki stage play adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s Princes Mononoke is now roughly half-way through its run at Tokyo’s Shinbashi Enbujo Theater. Tickets are almost entirely sold out, so for fans who haven’t already secured theirs, they’re going to be hard to come by.

Thankfully, though, it’s been announced that the Princess Mononoke stage play will be coming to online streaming, but it’s still something that fans will need to clear out a spot on their calendar for.

▼ A preview video for the Princess Mononoke kabuki play, showing Dango Ichikawa as Ashitaka, Kazutaro Nakamura as San, Manju Nakamura as Lady Eboshi, and a number of other human and creature characters from the Ghibli classic.

A live-stream will be shown of the final Princess Mononoke performance, the curtain for which will open at 4 p.m. on August 23. Access to the stream is priced at 4,800 yen (US$30), which is more expensive than the absolute cheapest theater tickets for the performance (3,000 yen), but still quite a bit under the second-lowest-priced seat (6,500 yen).

▼ Another preview video, showing off the kodama forest spirits and some very cool practical effects.

Especially if you’re planning to watch the stream together with a group of friends, it shouldn’t shatter your budget, and if you’re willing to shell out a little more, there’s also a 5,500-yen streaming package that includes a documentary with six months of behind-the-scenes footage chronicling the challenges the cast and crew faced and overcame in bringing one of anime’s most visually distinctive works into the real world.

The stream will be available on Rakuten, Hulu, Kabuki on Demand, and E Plus/Streaming Plus (links below).
