Delta Airlines adds first nonstop flight between Japan’s Narita Airport and U.S. in seven years

After a seven-year absence, Delta is ready for daily flights from its west coast hub to the Tokyo-area international airport.

A lot has changed in the Japan travel sphere in the past seven years. After one of the longest international tourism shutdowns of any nation during the pandemic, worldwide interest in Japan’s pop culture, cuisine, and photogenic landscapes/cityscapes is soaring at the same time that the value of the yen is plummeting. So with Japan having never before been such an in-demand and affordable destination for travelers from overseas, Delta is finally ready to start flying directly again from the U.S. to one of Japan’s largest international airports.

2019 was the last time that Delta flew directly from the U.S. to Narita, one of the Tokyo area’s two international airports. Since then, all Delta flights connecting Narita and the U.S. have required at least one layover. Come next spring, though, Delta will be reinstating daily direct flights between Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, the airline’s primary west coast hub, and Narita.

The flights will depart from Seattle at 1:35 p.m. and, as a result of crossing the international date line, arrive at Narita at 4:20 p.m. the following day. Headed back the other way across the Pacific, flights will take off from Narita at 6:40 p.m. and land in Seattle at noon of the same calendar date. Narita Airport claims that the Narita-Seattle route will be the shortest air travel path between Japan and the continental United States.

The route will be serviced by an Airbus A330-900neo aircraft with a capacity of 281 passengers, with 29 business-class, 28 Premium Economy, 56 Delta Comfort, and 168 Delta Main (i.e. standard economy) seats.

The first flight on the route will be a Seattle departure on March 27, 2027.
