Mos Burger skips tsukimi burgers, crafts moon-viewing focaccia sausage sandwiches instead

Newest entry in the chain’s tsukimi burger alternative features a rich and creamy “Golden Sauce.”

Autumn is the season for tsukimi (moon-viewing) in Japan, which also makes it the season for tsukimi burgers, hamburgers topped with an egg reminiscent of the full moon. So you might assume that Mos Burger, Japan’s most popular home-grown burger chain, is set to add tsukimi burgers of its own to its menu for the next several weeks.

In actuality, though, Mos Burger traditionally lets other Japanese fast food chains duke it out in the crowded tsukimi burger field and offers something different instead: tsukimi focaccia sausage sandwiches, and this year it’s bringing out a new version.

The Tsukimi Focaccia Golden Cheese Sauce (or Ogon Cheese Sauce, if you’re ordering it in Japanese) keeps the thick focaccia fold-over bun and smokey semicircle sausage that are the customary elements of Mos Burger’s tsukimi series. For your veggies, you get shredded cabbage and minced onions, and fulfilling the tsukimi qualification here is a melty soft-boiled egg, but it’s not the only eggy element. The Golden Cheese Sauce is a black pepper-accented mixture of Parmesan and cheddar cheeses plus powdered egg yolk. The result, Mos promises, is rich and creamy while still blending harmoniously with the other ingredients for a decadently satisfying sandwich.

As a matter of fact, if the sauce is sounding so tasty to you that you don’t even need the tsukimi-ness, Mos Burger can also make you a Golden Cheese Sauce Focaccia with no soft-boiled egg (though it still has the powdered egg yolk in the sauce).

The tsukimi version of the sandwich is priced at 630 yen (US$4), and its simpler counterpart at 560 yen. Both go on sale September 9 and are scheduled to be available through early November. And if tsukimi focaccia has you wondering what other foods the concept could be applied to, Pizza Hut Japan’s ovens will soon be cooking tsukimi sukiyaki pizzas.
