Discount retailers known for massive bargains releases massive Japanese egg sandwich

Don Quijote doubles up its “Peculiar Preference” sandwich.

Japanese egg sandwiches have recently become an unexpected hit among the international foodie community, but within Japan, they’ve been a staple for generations. You really don’t have to go very far to find one, as just about every convenience store or supermarket stocks them.

But if you really love Japan’s egg sandwiches, it’s worth going to the little extra trouble of making a trip to discount retailer Don Quixote to get one, because not only are they massive, right now they’re even bigger than they usually are.

Among tourists, Don Quijote is most famous for their selection of quirky souvenirs and affordable cosmetics, but they also sell clothing, toiletries, housewares, and, at some locations, even food items, including ready to eat bento boxed lunches and sandwiches.

With the chain being popular with a broad range of shoppers, you’d expect them to want to offer foodstuffs that anyone would like. However, for their Henai Meshi, or “Peculiar Preference Food,” line, Don Quijote isn’t worried about fully satisfying everybody. In fact, the goal of Henai Meshi is to create meals “that most people would give 75 points out of 100, but that some people will give 120,” like the Bento with Fried Chicken Skin Only that they offered a while back.

The Henai Meshi egg sandwich isn’t so unusual in terms of it ingredients, but their quantity could be considered egregious by some, as each sandwich is made with two and a half soft-boiled eggs. Right now, though, Don Quijote is running a special promotion in which it’s increasing the size of selected Henai Meshi items, and one of those is the egg sandwich, which has doubled in size and now contains five eggs!

The Five Melty Soft-boiled Egg Sandwich is priced at 430 yen (US$2.70), and if you’re thinking it’s got to be hefty to hold, you’re exactly right. We were curious as to just how heavy it was, so once we got back to the SoraNews24 taste-testing center, before digging in we placed it on a scale…

…which gave us a weight of 418 grams (roughly 14.75 ounces). Granted, a small fraction of that is the plastic packaging, but still, this is close to a pound of eggs and bread. There’s so much egg that the strips of bread between them start to look like garnish, or maybe just something to keep your fingers clean as you eat a whole tray of eggs.

Taste-testing was handled by our Japanese-language reporter P.K. Sanjun, who informs us that, in his estimation, the Five Melty Soft-boiled Egg Sandwich completely misses the mark for the Henai Meshi series. However, that’s not a complaint, because he clarifies that instead of being something that most people would give 75 point to and some would give 120, this sandwich is so delicious that he thinks most people would give it 95 out of a 100.

Of course, while we’re talking about numerical measurements, your dietician probably wouldn’t be too thrilled about what eating five eggs at once would do to your cholesterol levels. However, with Don Quiojote’s double-sized egg sandwich only being available from November 1 to 10, there’s not time really enough time to do all that much dietary damage, making this a decadent special-occasion indulgence P.K. is very happy to have treated himself to.
