Contrary to what some may say, not all Asians look alike. Some of us may look more similar to each other than others, but few are born with the looks of one of Japan’s most well-liked actresses, Yui Aragaki, nicknamed “Gakki,” who is known for her flawless snowy skin, bright eyes and charismatic smile.
Some also believe that there are seven people in the world who look just like you, and this adorable young lady from Shanghai, China, comes pretty close to being Aragaki’s doppleganger.
Referring to herself as Lizi (栗子), the graduate of Shanghai Ocean University has recently risen to cyber fame, coined by netizens as “China’s Gakki” or “Chinese Yui Aragaki” due to her resemblance to the Japanese big screen star.

Boasting over 19,000 and 140,000 followers on Instagram and Weibo (China’s most popular social media platform) respectively, Lizi looks most like Aragaki when she’s sporting short hair with her fringe down and flashing a megawatt smile. I’ll have to admit that I did a double take when I first saw some of her photos.

Following the second season of the My Hero Academia anime series, the Good Smile x Animate Cafe is set to open its doors and welcome guests with a list of limited-time My Hero Academia collaboration food, beverages and exclusive merchandise!
The second season of the anime series throws the spotlight on the internship arc of My Hero Academia, and so does the cafe’s menu. Nine out of ten items on the food menu feature a mashup of motifs taken from the students of the academy and the respective heroes they are interning with.

Just how much reality behind South Korea’s idol industry is revealed in this show?
Idol School, a South Korean reality television series broadcast by Mnet, is out to tickle, squeeze, and possibly break a few hearts of K-pop idol fans. Having made its virgin debut on South Korean television just a couple of weeks ago, the series looks like a happy party with dozens of young, cute, uniform-wearing aspiring idols singing and dancing their hearts out, but is in fact a severe elimination competition that will eventually reduce the group of 41 participants down to the final nine who will acquire the chance to make their official debut.
As its title suggests, the program takes on a school theme, and the contestants, who are effectively the “students”, go through an intensive 11-week “education” programme which prepares them for the K-pop rat race. The 41 “students” are aged as young as 12, and hail from countries such as Thailand, the U.S., Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, and the U.K., along with South Korea itself. Some of the girls have even had prior experience in the music industry.

Of course, there can’t be a school without teachers, and this idol school boasts a teaching cast made up of big names from the K-pop industry, including producers, choreographers, voice instructors, and celebrity fitness instructors, such as veteran idol Kim Hee Chul from Super Junior.

To idol fans and idol wannabes, the television series provides a chance to see the hard work idols put in behind-the-scenes in exchange for their glamorous on-stage selves.

Fans may also enjoy observing the growth of the “student” they support over the episodes, but at the end of the season, some may experience a moment of despair as the majority of the girls will be leaving the show without a shot at stardom.
However, one could say that in itself is a microscopic version of the music industry. The “graduation” from Idol School is but the start line to a long, harsh marathon in the highly competitive world of K-pop.

There’s nothing like ending the best years of youth with a memorable photo shoot.
The highlight of high school years varies for everyone, but for many of us, it’s either prom or the creation of the graduation yearbook that takes the cake. And when it comes to making yearbooks, photographs are a must! Without photographs, we won’t be able to pull out our yearbook some thirty years down the road, look back in time and have a good laugh at how awkward we used to look in the prime of our teens.
Getting a new haircut is perhaps as far as some of us would go to look good for our graduation photos, but the students of Uijeongbu High School in South Korea have bigger plans for their yearbook photoshoot.
It’s cosplay! Ranging from fictional characters to famous personalities to non-living things, these South Korean high school students have gone all out to make their graduation album the most memorable one they can. Did you recognize any of the characters they dressed up as?

This year’s Pikachu Outbreak is extending its awesomeness to vending machines nationwide!
As we reported earlier this year, the annual Pikachu Outbreak in Yokohama is making a comeback, possibly with Pokémon species other than Pikachu this time around, but it seems that’s not where the cuteness is going to stop.
If you’ve seen our articles on previous years’ Pikachu Outbreak events, you probably know that these lovable human-sized Pikachus are more than capable of standing around looking cute. This time, a mob of 30 Pikachus have wiggled and jiggled their way into Ito En’s vending machines, which will be making appearances, first in Yokohama from 9th August as a tie-up with the Pikachu Outbreak event, and subsequently all over Japan from mid-August.

The machines will also be loaded with these adorable PokéVege beverages, which are vending machine limited versions of Ito En’s long-selling vegetable juice Jyuujitsu Yasai (充実野菜). The special Pokémon packaging comes in five variations, which include Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Snorlax.
Besides the design featured in the video, the Ito En×Pokémon vending machines will be hitting the streets in three different designs.
Besides hunting for Pokémon in Pokémon GO, keep a lookout for these cheery Pikachu vending machines if you’re visiting Japan this summer! South Korea’s top shopping site, Gmarket, recently released a series of commercials which created quite the buzz amongst South Korean Internet users, thanks to its brain-eating combination of attractive faces, listless dance moves and addictive rhythm.
The series of commercials features popular K-pop idols Seol Hyun (AOA) and Hee Chul (Super Junior) expressionlessly dancing to perhaps the most hypnotizing beat we’ve heard all week, repeatedly hammering keywords like “hot, hot, hot” and “specials, specials, specials” into the depths of our minds.

Your ears might have picked up another keyword that is emphasized commonly throughout the series, 하드캐리 (pronounced “hadeukaeli”), which translates to “hard carry”, an online game-originated slang word which refers to one who “carries the team”. Or in this case, the one who takes the lead.
So it seems that Gmarket is out to take the lead in this year’s summer sales, which is probably awesome news for users of the online shopping website. For the rest of us, though, at least we’ve managed to pick up some Korean words which we might or might never ever get the chance to use.

The original version of “History Maker” by Dean Fujioka has a very contemporary feel to it, which perfectly suits the anime, but Kazushi Okimasa’s cover with the koto adds a graceful touch to it without losing its essence.
If you liked this collaboration of traditional Japanese instruments and anime songs, you’d be pleased to know that there’s more! On top of being a fabulous koto player, Kazushi Okimasa also leads Famikoto, a band which performs game and anime music on various Japanese instruments including the koto, shakuhachi and shamisen. Studio Ghibl fans will want to give a lsiten to this version of “Kimi wo Nosete,” from Hayao Miyazaki’s Castle in the Sky Laputa.

Watching a film adaptation multiple times might not be the best way to financially support your favourite manga artist.
If you love anime and manga, you’re probably be aware that a large percentage of anime are adapted from existing manga series. Depending on the popularity of the series, the adaptations don’t just stop at anime series, but go on to animated films, live-action movies, and sometimes even musicals.
With the recent boom for live-action movie adaptations of manga, many people think that manga artists are raking in money with all the various adaptations of their work, but is that really the case?
Japanese Twitter user @beasty__baby recently posted an image of a bonus Q&A section published in the 51st collected volume of manga Gintama, where author Hideaki Sorachi reveals the saddening truth behind the glamour of big screen adaptations.

I have a question. A while ago, my mother heard that the Gintama animation film was a big hit, and commented that “(Hideaki Sorachi) must be living at [luxury highrise] Roppongi Hills since it’s so popular”. Is that true?A:
To tell the naked truth, regardless of how many people watch the film or how much the gross earnings are, not a single yen goes to the author. We are only paid an upfront license fee. The amount we’re paid is peanuts in comparison to the overall box office gross. The majority of the profits go to filthy unscrupulous companies such as Shueisha and Sunrise. Releasing individual manga volumes is way more profitable.But the reason why I slog to fulfill these film adaptations, to the extent that I’m peeing blood, is because there is a place in this world that is more wonderful than a mansion at Roppongi Hills. And that place, ma’am, is in your heart.
If Gintama can reach the hearts of the masses, I wouldn’t mind living in a hill made of cardboard. The authors are the only ones who harbour such honest intentions with their creations.
So ma’am, if you’re feeling sorry for us, don’t just watch the movies, but also buy our books so that we can live at Roppongi Hills with the publishing royalties.

As you might already know, the Gintama live-action movie is scheduled for release next year. We’re not sure if the licensing conditions for animated films and live-action adaptations are similar, but we’re guessing they’re not too vastly different.
Film adaptation is a way to reach out to a greater audience since not everyone is an avid manga reader, but apparently not the most efficient way for manga artists to increase their earnings despite the eye-catching numbers shown in their box office figures.
In a nutshell, if you like a certain manga-originated anime series, go ahead and watch its films or purchase its merchandise, but above all that, buy the manga to keep the creators of the series alive!

The first trailer was a complete tease, but there’s finally some action and voice in this new preview video!
As we’ve previously shared, the Black Butler Book of the Atlantic anime film is slated to hit the big screens on January 21, 2017. The first teaser video gave us a glimpse into the mystery that is in store, but left fans hanging for more as it consisted solely of still images. The second teaser, thankfully, heightens the excitement with animation snippets of key characters in the film. Together with the release of the second trailer, three new cast members have been revealed, as well as the theme song for the upcoming film, and a brand new visual image illustrated by the film’s character designer and chief animation director, Minako Shiba.

Sangatsu no Lion (March Comes in like a Lion) has a limited-time cafe serving food right out of the manga!
Food in manga and anime often look incredibly delicious, don’t they? From food-related anime and manga series such as Shokugeki no Soma to Studio Ghibli masterpieces, fans are always eager to try and replicate the grub featured in our favourite works.
In the case of the currently ongoing manga and anime series Sangatsu no Lion, we don’t have to play trial and error in the kitchen, because the limited time Sangatsu no Lion Cafe has recreated some of the dishes featured in the series for us!
Although the series’ storyline mainly revolves around a 17-year-old professional shogi player, surprisingly or not, scenes involving eating come up every once in awhile. At it’s current publication status of 12 volumes, a total of 18 different foodstuffs have been featured. It’s almost like there’s a subliminal food theme going on beneath the focus on protagonist Rei Kiriyama’s ups and downs.

YouTube user KaoringMachine has invented the Ochinchin Drum (which literally means “penis drum”), or, as he calls it in English, Electric Sexy Drum Pants.

Following the Book of Circus (TV anime series) and Book of Murder (OVA) arcs, the charming and mysterious world of Black Butler has even more in store for audiences — this time the story is set on the luxury liner Campania, where secrets involving resurrecting the dead are waiting to be unraveled.
The first teaser clip for the movie was released some weeks ago, and while actual footage of the upcoming film has yet to be revealed, this minute-long clip, featuring visuals created by Black Butler mangaka Yana Toboso, does a good job at stirring up the mystery and anticipation.

Most commonly enjoyed with McNuggets and fries, could this tasty sauce also be a handy condiment for cooking?
Whenever I go overseas, besides indulging in the local delicacies, I often like to make a stop at McDonald’s to try out the region-exclusive items on their menu that may include limited time offerings, special collaboration menus, and even a different variety of dips.
Currently in Japan, McDonald’s offers two types of sauce dips, mustard and BBQ, to go with McNuggets. Where I come from, however, curry sauce is the all-time favourite. Mildly spicy with a sweet fruity tang, this curry sauce is so popular that when McDonald’s Singapore retailed the sauce in 375 millilitre take-home bottles for a limited period of time, stocks were wiped out in a flash. We had tried to get our hands on those, but failed to, unfortunately.
In a twist of events, when some of my Singaporean friends visited last week, they very kindly brought us an overly generous serving of over 200 packets of said curry sauce. And when our Japanese editorial team laid their eyes on the heap of sauce packets, one genius came up with the idea of cooking curry. With the curry sauce. Seriously, what could go wrong?

Believing that the appearance of 200 packets of curry sauce was a culinary hint from the higher beings, Sanjun and Hatori prepared the curry in the same way most Japanese home-cooked curries are made, but using curry sauce as a replacement for the typical Japanese curry roux.
Bite-sized chunks of meat, potatoes, carrots and onions were first lightly stir-fried in the pot. Water was then added, and the ingredients were left to simmer for a while, before the crux of the dish, McDonald’s Singapore’s curry sauce, was added to the pot.
According to Chef Sanjun, the moment the sauce was added, “a unique scent reminiscent of Chinese medicinal herbs, or slums, filled the room”. Unsettling smell aside, the curry looked ready to be served!

Contrary to the smells that wafted from the pot, the curry tasted extremely sweet. Exceedingly sweet. The fruity flavours that the curry sauce had originally had mysteriously vanished, leaving nothing but sweetness.
Japanese curry itself tastes sweeter than most other types of curry, but even our Japanese team, who are undoubtedly used to the flavours of Japanese curry, were overwhelmed by the sweetness of the curry sauce curry. On an interesting note, while the general opinion was that the dish tasted incredibly sweet, Mr. Sato said that it tasted sour. We guess Mr. Sato’s tongue is made differently after all!

(If you had to say whether it tastes good or bad?) “Mmm… it isn’t entirely bad so I guess I’d say it’s good.”
On top of that, our Japanese staff also described the product as “the worst in-flight food ever”, “a taste that makes one tremble”, and also mentioned that even if their girlfriends had made the dish, they would give critical feedback.
Determined to make the curry more palatable so that it wouldn’t go to waste, Sanjun added the all-mighty condiment Somi Syantan Deluxe (as seen in our previous attempt at making Pirozhki), and it did indeed salvage the dish… to a certain extent.

Just for the record, the cooks of the day did think that the curry sauce itself was delicious! We just have no idea what went wrong…

Cue Yuri On Ice, an original anime that places its spotlight on the glamorous stage of a figure skating Grand Prix tournament. Alongside a handful of athletes hailing from various countries, these handsome young men get into heated battle of grace and technique on their frozen battlefield, the skating rink!

If you’ve never had Pirozhki (or Piroshki), you might want to see this. On the other hand, if you know what Pirozhki looks or tastes like, you should definitely see this!
Have you ever tried Pirozhki? I’ve never tasted or even seen it before. And neither had Seiji Nakazawa, our reporter and chef for the day, prior to cooking this dish. Well, the one thing we know for sure that it’s something commonly enjoyed in Russian homes.
If you’ve never had Pirozhki before, try saying the word ten times, and then try to imagine what it looks or tastes like! Nakazawa did just that, and this is the image he had in mind:
▼ A somewhat solidified block that consists of mainly cabbage and eggs (meats are optional), drenched in chili sauce. Also, he believed that Pirozhki should probably be made up of “piro” and “zhki” elements.
Considering that this dish can be cooked at home, the ingredients used should be readily available, so cabbage and eggs sound like a reasonable choice. On top of that, Nakazawa decided to go for salmon flakes, simply because “most Russian homes should have leftover salmon”. In Nakazawa’s visualization, these few ingredients, together with sliced cheese, should make up the “zhki” part of the dish.
Perhaps you’re wondering at this point, why chili sauce? According to Nakazawa, the sound “piro” makes him think of something red and spicy, and since the Russian flag has red in it, he’s confident that he’s got this one right!
We shan’t spoil this any further for you. Go ahead and witness the making of this Nakazawa-style “Pirozhki”!
▼ Ingredients: Cabbage, egg, cheese, milk, salmon flakes, Somi Syantan Deluxe (a seasoning paste most commonly used in Chinese cuisine), sweet chili sauce, ground black pepper
▼ Stir fry the cabbage.
▼ Add in the egg, followed by cheese. Try to compact it into a block.
▼ Add in the salmon flakes.
▼ And the finishing touch… Piro Power!! Be generous with the chili sauce! A dash of black pepper will do the trick.
Nakazawa’s verdict:
“The first taste that fills my mouth is the chili sauce. Following which comes the mellow taste of the egg, the fibrous crunch of the cabbage, and the savoury impact of the salmon. It’s good! This should go well with rice!! Well, the acidity from the chili sauce combined with the fishy smell of the salmon makes it taste a little like vomit, but what can you expect from homemade food. On a separate note, there’s no trace of the cheese, but I guess that happens with home cooking too.”
Nakazawa seemed to be fairly pleased with his piece of work, but in order to get a fair review, we had the rest of our Japanese editorial team try the dish! If you’re from Russia, just bear in mind that the following responses are directed at Nakazawa’s imaginary “Pirozhki” and we have no doubt that the real deal looks and tastes better than this experimental dish.

Not too surprisingly, none of our Japanese writers have ever eaten an authentic Pirozhki. We’re not sure if trying the Nakazawa-style version of it has affected their inclination to try the real thing in the future, but we’re glad to announce that there were no casualties.

There are a couple hundred maid cafes across Japan, but the soon-to-open ItaCafe, an all-Russian maid cafe, is perhaps the first of its kind. Led by cafe manager Nastyan (@nastyan_cos on Twitter), who is currently studying Japanese in Japan and has made a name for herself on Japanese cyberspace with her adorable cosplays, ItaCafe is set to open its doors this coming October.

▼ Nastyan most recently attracted attention for her GIRLS und PANZER cosplay at Anime Japan 2016.
The cafe will not only house an all-Russian maid crew, they will also be serving authentic Russian fare. In preparation of its grand opening, Nastyan and team started a crowdfunding project on Campfire, seeking contributions to pay for the ingredients for all the cooking practice they’ll need to perfect their menu, as well as the ingredients that will be used in dishes to be served at food tasting sessions to be held prior to the opening.
A total of two food tasting sessions are scheduled, participation rights to both of which are available as rewards for pledging a sum of 11,000 yen (US$107). Apart from the opportunity to taste what’s cooking ahead of the others, the range of returns available also includes entry to the cafe’s opening party, one-on-one Russian language lessons, and even a group tour to Russia with the cafe’s very own maids.

Recent live-action film adaptations of manga and anime haven’t had tremendous success at the box office, and some fans are worried that the Gintama live-action movie will follow in its predecessors’ footsteps. Internet users have voiced some concerns, the most prominent one being whether Kanna Hashimoto, the “once in a millennium” idol, will be able to pull of the un-idol-like stuff her character Kagura is known for, such as picking her nose and puking something other than a rainbow.

Another interesting question raised by fans was, if Shun Oguri is cast as Gintoki, who is going to play Shunnosuke Oguri (a parody character of the lead actor himself)?
It is unknown whether Shunnosuke Oguri will be making a cameo appearance in the movie, but one thing we know for sure is that the cast is absolutely stellar! With so many big screen favourites onboard, this will definitely be quite the show…right?
