“No Elsa! Please don’t ‘let it go’ all over my dress!”
There’s no limit to the amount of crazy Frozen merchandise that can be produced. From color-changing bras to spinning techno tops to, uh, pregnant Anna iPhone games, it seems like people are still putting Frozen characters on whatever random thing they come up with and just hoping that it works.
But even some of the more normal Frozen merchandise can feel like it’s a little off. For example, take this senbei package that was recently posted by Japanese Twitter user @sauce_bolonaise:
▼ “All I can see when I look at this is someone
holding her drunk friend and hailing a cab.”
どう見ても酔っ払いを介抱しつつタクシーを呼ぶ人にしか見えない pic.twitter.com/d1bFNymiZy
— たぬき (@sauce_bolonaise) June 14, 2016
To be fair, this is from the scene where Elsa heals Anna with her “true love” after accidentally freezing her. She’s not doubled over because she’s vomiting up one too many cocktails, but because she’s crying over her sister, who she thought was dead.
But at the same time, it’s an odd choice for a senbei package, to say the least. Why not just have the two sisters smiling? Why not have Olaf and Sven? Did they really say to themselves, “You know, that sad scene where one of the sisters is in tears and the other almost died would be perfect for our senbei,” and think that was a good idea?
No matter the reasoning behind the Frozen-spiration, here’s what Japanese netizens had to say:
“Yeah, I think I’ve seen that exact scene before like five times.”
“Back in the 80s, Anna would be holding out a 10,000-yen bill.”
“Having a drunk person on the package looking like they’re throwing up doesn’t make the senbei that appealing….”
“I can hear the conversation: ‘Come on! Just one more bar!’ ‘Ughhh, I think I drank too much….'”
Well, let’s just hope Ann and Elsa coming home drunk doesn’t lead to any more Frozen-related divorces….

Check out six of the most awesome New Year’s postcards of 2015! https://soranews24.com/2015/01/06/cool-nengajo-bro-check-out-six-of-this-years-most-awesome-new-years-postcards/ https://soranews24.com/2015/01/06/cool-nengajo-bro-check-out-six-of-this-years-most-awesome-new-years-postcards/#comments Mon, 05 Jan 2015 23:30:01 +0000 http://en.rocketnews24.com/?p=207754
Nengajo, or New Year’s greeting cards, are a ubiquitous part of the end-of-year season in Japan. Much like Christmas cards in the west, nengajo are sent to family and friends to update them on what you’ve been up to that year. In fact, there are so many nengajo sent at the end of the year that post offices in Japan have to employ students as temporary staff to make sure they meet the delivery deadline of January 1. While there are plenty of preprinted cards available from stationery shops, many people opt to make their own, personalised cards. A nice touch, but results may vary depending on the artistic skills (and sense of humour) of the postcard sender! To show you what we mean, we’ve put together a little list of the best of this year’s nengajo. Some of them are genuinely impressive, while others would make us cringe if the neighbours saw ’em!

First up is a promotional nengajo from special effects company Tsuburaya Productions, known in Japan for providing special effects for classic shows such as Ultraman. Nengajo usually feature the classic New Year’s greeting Akemashite omedetou, but this one’s a play on words – instead of “a new dawn” the card reads Aketekure, “open me up, please!”

What’s inside? A flyer for a promotional event. Okay, so not that interesting. Let’s move on!

This nengajo might not look like much, but it’s actually kind of cool (honest!) As you can see, it’s made to look like a train ticket listing the origin (New Year’s Day) and destination (New Year’s Eve). Which basically means you’ve got a year long ticket to ride! Check out the little sheep picture (2015 being the year of the sheep, after all) and the small print on the ticket, which says “best wishes again this year!” Just don’t stick this in your pocket by mistake then try to get on the train with it – the station workers might not find it so charming now that the holiday period is over and everyone’s back at work like bears with sore heads!

You know that feeling when you make a joke and nobody laughs? Multiply that by around 7,000 retweets and you’ll probably get a good idea of how this nengajo-jokester felt when his postcard was mocked on twitter. The postcard features a snap of the sender, along with text that reads; “Are you by any chance a postal delivery worker? I seem to have gotten trapped in a nengajo! Could you kindly post me to (name and address of recipient) so they can let me out?” The creator of the postcard uploaded it with a gloomy comment which reads “I spent two hours of my life making this piece of crap nengajo and when I think of going to actually post it I feel so depressed…” Hey, nengajo are about spreading joy to loved ones! Cheer up! On the other hand, his nengajo is bad and maybe he should feel bad…

When sending out funny postcards en masse, it’s better to hedge your bets by going with something that’s genuinely popular across the board, like Naruto. The text on this card reads “Hey you! It’s a whole new year now!” The pleased recipient commented, “Of all the nengajo I received this year, this one’s the best.” Nice and simple!

— jun (@soraameca) January 1, 2015
This rather horrifying creation sprung from the mind of a beauty salon frequented by this customer, who uploaded the card for the amusement of their followers. It’s clearly a send-off of the monstrously popular Disney film Frozen, known in Japan as Anna and the Snow Queen. While the postcard is pretty funny, there’s no way we would ever consider getting our hair cut by the terrifying man in the picture. In fact, it’s really hard to tell what they’re trying to convey with this. “Stop by our salon and a chihuaha wearing a crown will molest you while we cut off your ponytail with garden shears?” Erm, pass!
https://twitter.com/kabechii/status/550481352928137216
Okay, so we’ll admit it – most of these nengajo aren’t all that awesome. But we’ve saved the best for last! One twitter user shared a snap of a nengajo sent to them by their dear old dad. This apparently hand-made card is set out like a complicated word puzzle, and actually spells out multiple messages of New Year’s good cheer, some of which lead to dead ends, and only one of which can be followed all the way around to meet the sheep in the middle. It’s actually quite a challenge, and pretty frustrating at times, especially when you reach a dead end and papa gently rebukes you for being a careless nincompoop. We love the idea of a crossword-loving papa spending hours hunched over a desk working on this little creation (possibly while smoking a pipe and wearing a comfy pair of slippers, and chuckling heartily at his own craftiness). Hopefully the recipient will treasure this nengajo for years to come! Incidentally, who here managed to reach the sheep on their first try?
If sending Christmas cards isn’t your thing, why not adopt the Japanese custom of sending New Year’s cards next year, instead? Hopefully this year’s efforts have inspired you!

The Kyaraben trend is still going strong in Japan, and even though winter has prompted some to make the temporary switch to deco-nabe, the demand for adorable packed lunches shows no signs of abating. Today we’d like to take a look back over the best of the past year’s Kyaraben. What can we learn about 2014 in Japan from studying these perfect works of edible art?
The year’s most popular Kyaraben characters can be whittled down to a shortlist of just three. These three mascots dominated lunchboxes in 2014, meaning that if you showed up to elementary school without one of these little critters peeking up at you from a mound of rice and carefully shaped seaweed, well, then you knew you just weren’t one of the cool kids.
In third place, it’s Funassyi! (Un-)officially representing the city of Funabashi, Chiba, this jiggly yellow pear has captured the attention of kids everywhere (as well as inspiring our own Mr Sato to create a homage character), prompting doting parents to endeavour to reproduce its adorableness utilising the medium of bento.

Remember when we recently had a little fun with the Disney’s Frozen pastry buns that have gone on sale all over Japan? You know, the ones oozing with cream and chocolate (mmm) and featuring the annoying face of that goofy snowman (grr) that’s absolutely everywhere right now? While we certainly enjoyed mangling Olaf’s face with a big knife whilst maniacally humming “Let it Go”, it seems that one Twitter user has an even better idea for dealing with that pent-up Frozen frustration. An idea that involves re-purposing the buns into something more aesthetically pleasing! Since we’re all about that silver lining (and since generally, we enjoy our food more when it doesn’t look like a murder scene) we had to investigate! It turns out that it’s actually pretty simple to change goofy Olaf into another character with a little more pedigree behind it – Bert from Sesame Street! Read on for the step-by step guide!
When Twitter user korekore19 hit upon an easy solution to switch up Olaf’s facial features, they were kind enough to share it with the rest of us! The procedure seems to involve carefully peeling off all of Olaf’s features except for a tiny bit of mouth, and then simply re-shaping and re-positioning them to form the visage of beloved Sesame Street character Bert.
[tweet https://twitter.com/korekore19/status/544977559767629824 align=center]
▲ “I bought an Olaf bun but it really reminded me of Bert from Sesame Street! So I decided to re-arrange it a bit.”
Our only concern is just how Bert’s yellow complexion was achieved. We’re wondering if this was a photoshop job (which would ruin the magic somewhat) or if some kind of food coloring was used. Still, we think this is a pretty good effort, although that tiny gap in what should be Bert’s unibrow sort of breaks the illusion for us.
It seems that korekore19 wasn’t the first on Twitter to notice Olaf’s similarity to ol’ Bert:
[tweet https://twitter.com/kira_kan0n/status/539405842039046146 align=center]
▲ ”Doesn’t the Olaf bun look a lot like this character from Sesame Street?”
[tweet https://twitter.com/tango_hime/status/544667821762809857 align=center]
▲ “I’ve been so excited to get my hands on the Olaf bun from Family Mart!
(((o(*゚▽゚*)o))) The chocolate filling is so melty and delicious! The only thing is, the face actually looks more like Bert than Olaf…”
[tweet https://twitter.com/nunukobiyori/status/544679206223765504 align=center]
▲ “Family Mart’s Frozen Olaf bun. Looks just like Bert from Sesame Street.”
[tweet https://twitter.com/taskman1995/status/539376735360258049 align=center]
▲ “Family Mart’s Olaf bun reminded me of something so I did a little searching and yep, it’s this dude from Sesame Street.”
Hmm, now that you mention it, the resemblance is uncanny! We’ll never be able to watch Frozen the same way again!

Whether you sing Let it Go as a daily ritual, or just the thought of hearing that song one more time gives you brainfreeze, you can’t deny the pervasive popularity of Disney’s 2013 hit movie Frozen. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Japan, where Frozen can be found on everything from water bottles and chips to reasons for divorce.
For some people though, that’s not enough: they need to recreate Frozen with their own hands.
Don’t let your eyes deceive you; even though it looks like the real Olaf is out and about visiting Japan, it’s actually the creation of Japanese Twitter user Shunpei who recently posted photos showing the stunning Frozen snowman that he made out of real snow. You can see it for yourself right here:
▼ “Made Olaf – not too shabby.”
https://twitter.com/shunpei417/status/544070007458496512
I wholeheartedly agree. Personally I consider myself lucky when I can just get a snowball to stick together, so I have much respect for the craftsmanship that went into this sculpture. Some of the fine details like Olaf’s pointed cheeks, buck teeth, and big circular eyes look more like they’re products of a scalpel and chisel than bulky, awkward gloves.
According to the comments on Shunpei’s post, the carrot for Olaf’s nose is the genuine article, and instead of using rocks or coal for the eyes and buttons, he opted for nori instead. Hmm, that’s actually not a bad idea….
▼ The Olaf Roll: nori, carrots, and… snow?
The only issue that this author can see arising is when it comes time for real-life Olaf to achieve his dream of enjoying the warmer weather. In our world that is sorely lacking in Elsa’s ice magic, it probably won’t go over too well for him. The bright lights being flashed on his face to get better pictures might not be helping much either.
▼ Guys I know I said some people are worth melting for, but… not like this!

Here is a picture of the duo who created the snow masterpiece. Coincidentally, it doesn’t take much imagination to see the two of them as the real-life, male, Japanese versions of Elsa and Anna.
▼ Come on, the one on the left is totally the older angsty one, and the one on the right is the happy-go-lucky redhead kid sister. Don’t you see it?

If you’ve found these pictures inspiring, and you’re lucky enough to have snow where you are, then go ahead and try your hand at creating your own Olaf. You don’t need a magical sister – just some passion, seaweed, and a couple of warm hugs.

While some people are arguably Frozen‘d out, the movie’s popularity doesn’t look like it will go anywhere anytime soon, what with limited edition PS4s and karaoke rankings.
Niconico user おかっち took it one step further by using the Miku Miku Dance animation program to recreate the “Let It Go” video with Hatsune Miku in place of Elsa. From start the finish, the process took 43 days.
While that version still uses the powerful vocals of Takako Matsu, who sang the Japanese film version of “Let It Go,” Niconico user kraria decided to make a Vocaloid version, to give the video an even more Miku quality.
What do you think? If you could recast Frozen with Vocaloids, who would you choose for each role? Let us know in the comments!

Japan has officially caught Frozen fever and you’d be hard pressed to go on any Japanese forum without seeing at least one strange, crazy, or completely cool post about the movie. It seems Japanese manufacturers have caught on and a storm of Frozen foods in limited edition packages have been produced in celebration of the July 16 release of Anna and the Snow Queen, the title given to Disney’s chilly hit animated feature in Japan. Let’s take a look at just a few!
First up we have Meiji’s blueberry Bulgaria Yogurt featuring the two Frozen sisters:
▼ Bulgaria brand is by far the most favorite yogurt of Japan, but we have a feeling it’s now going to be even more popular.
▼ It comes in a drinkable variety as well!
The Yamazaki Baking Co. has wrapped their popular confections in beautifully illustrated packaging featuring snowflakes falling around Elsa and Anna.
▼ Sugar doughnuts get a little more frosted.
▼ Elsa showcases the salted caramel cake.
▼ Anna looks right at home with the pink package of the crepe roll pastry.
Starting July 15, Japanese convenience store chain Family Mart will release some adorable Frozen snacks of their own.
▼ First up, the colorful “rare cheese parfait.”
▼ Sink your teeth into a bit of “blueberry rare cheese Olaf”
▼ Our favorite Frozen items, these Braid Bread are even baked to resemble the color of both Anna and Elsa’s long locks.

Bourbon (the company, not the drink) gets points for having the largest variety of items decked out in snowflakes. Here’s a small sample of their products:
▼ The entire gang (even the nasty Hans) can be found on these chocolate & strawberry biscuits.
▼ These potato chips look icy cool with their new makeover!
▼ How about some Frozen bottled water? Check out Olaf in the top corner!

Nope, we’re not quite done yet! Our last Frozen food is from Japanese confectionary Glico and will be available starting August 19. The Kiss Will candies are peach mint flavored tablets shaped like Mickey Mouse and come in one of three shades of pink packaging featuring the duo of either Anna and Elsa or Elsa and Olaf.

We’re not sure if you’ll be able to finish off all of the limited edition Frozen foods in one day (those Braid Breads are quite substantial), but we’re sure you’ll have fun trying. And if all these Japanese foods wrapped up in Frozen have you curious about the Japanese language version of the movie, take a look at one of the trailers from Japan!:
