Slather your body in Mario and Luigi and immerse yourself in the game world…literally!

When you think about anime or game-related goods, you might think the best place to get them is in Japan. While you’d be right most of the time, that isn’t the case with the latest round of limited-edition Mario Bros. goods, because fans in Japan will have to wait until 18 April to get their hands on the new limited-edition collection, which is over three weeks later than fans overseas.

The late release in Japan is likely due to the local release date for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which this new collection is in celebration of. While the movie will be released on 5 April in countries like the U.S., U.K., Australia and Canada, here in Japan, the movie is set to screen on 28 April.

While the wait may be frustratingly long for fans in Japan, it looks set to be worth it, because this collection is designed to bring the world of Super Mario Bros into the bathroom, with 12 specially designed Lush goods featuring characters and items from the movie.

The star of the show here is the Question Block Bath Bomb, which will retail in Japan for 2,400 yen (US$18.43).

As you might expect, these bath bombs come with one of six different mystery items inside, so that once it fizzes away in the bath, your special item will be revealed.

The items that can be found inside the Question Block are, clockwise, below, from top to bottom: Coin (in the Honey I Washed The Kids scent); Mini Mushroom Power Up (Avocado Co Wash scent); Ice Flower Power Up (Outback Mate scent); Big Mushroom Power Up (Big scent); Star Power Up (Sexy Peel scent); Fire Flower Power Up (Cinders scent)

▼ A lush way to power up after a hard day.

Fans who want to slather their bodies in their favourite characters can do so with the Mario and Luigi shower gels, which are appropriately coloured and available in three sizes: 110 grams (3.8 ounces) for 1,200 yen, 280 grams for 2,400 yen and 560 grams for 4,000 yen.

▼ Mario’s gel contains fruity, spicy notes of lime, black pepper and pomegranate

▼ Luigi’s gel is filled with the scent of apples.

Princess Peach and Bowser are available in Shower Jelly form, with peach scents for the princess and cinnamon, cloves and star anise for Bowser.

▼ Each one is available in a choice of two sizes: 100 grams (1,000 yen) or 240 grams (2,000 yen).

▼ Princess Peach will also keep you smelling peachy all day with the Body Spray for 5,100 yen.

And rounding out the collection we have the Gold Coin Soap (860 yen), which wraps you in the scent of crème brulée and promises to enrich both your body and soul.

While people in Japan will have to wait for the collection to appear in stores and online from 14 April, fans overseas will be able to enjoy the range from 24 March.

So let us know what it’s like, overseas fans! We’ll be pacing ourselves in the meantime by playing Super Mario Bros. as a three-person co-op game, like we did back in 2021.

King of the Koopas remains in fine legal standing, but someone with his namesake is headed to the courtroom.

Over the years, Nintendo has supplied Mario with all sorts of power-ups. Super Mario Bros. had the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower, and its sequels quickly added to his arsenal with tanooki suits, flying capes, and more. And yet, no matter how many times Mario “defeats” the bad guy, he always comes back.

▼ Sometimes he even gets marquee-billing, like in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

So it makes a certain sense that this time, when Nintendo wants to stop Bowser’s evil ambitions once and for all, they’re not calling in the plumber, but instead their lawyers, as Nintendo is officially suing Bowser.

We should clarify, though, that Nintendo isn’t brining the legal fight to the fictional character it owns, but to one Gary Bowser, said to be the leader of hacking group Team Xecuter. This isn’t a case of Nintendo picking on some small, for-fun fan game ROM hackers either, as their issue with Team Xecuter is that the group sells device that allow buyers to bypass security systems built into the Switch, allowing it to play pirated games (Bowser also sold simmilar devices for the 3DS). Nintendo of America is now suing Bowser and his associate Max Louarn via a lawsuit filed in Seattle. According to Polygon, the company is seeking damages of “$2,500 for each trafficked device, as well as $150,000 for each copyright violation.”

Team Xecuter’s alleged for-profit sales of the devices make it hard to see them as mere gaming historians promoting preservation, and Twitter reactions in Japan have been less than sympathetic towards the hackers.

“Once Nintendo’s lawyers have you in their sights, you’re finished.”
“For a guy named Bowser, he’s not any smarter than a grunt Koopa Troopa.”
“Will they punish him by swinging an axe to cut the rope on a bridge and drop him into a pit of lava?”
“Mario should testify for the prosecution.”
“It’s his job to restore the peace when Bowser is getting out of line, after all.”

However, despite all the talk of Mario, it should not be forgotten that Nintendo of America’s current president is a man named Doug Bowser, meaning that the upcoming legal battle is actually one of Bowser vs. Bowser. Who knows, maybe the lawsuit will inspire Nintendo to take a page out of the Ace Attorney playbook and make a Super Mario spinoff where the mother of the Koopalings comes back and you play through the ensuing custody battle.

7-Eleven is ready to serve Nintendo fans Bowser-breath fried chicken and non-peach Princess Peach desserts.

This Thursday, we were supposed to be meeting Mario at the grand opening of Universal Studios Japan’s Super Nintendo World expansion. That’s been postponed indefinitely as a result of the coronavirus having not even the slightest shred of respect for Nintendo fans’ schedule, but Mario is still popping up elsewhere, like on Japan’s Super Mario train that’s running around Osaka and soon at 7-Eleven convenience stores across Japan.

7-Eleven is offering six new Super Mario-themed treats, starting with the Mario Mix Roll (183 yen [US$1.75]), a split roll stuffed with mushroom sauce spaghetti, a croquette, and egg salad. For sweeter stuff, there’s the Yoshi’s Green Melon Bread (151 yen), filled with melon whipped cream.

There’s also Princess Peach’s Dolce (324 yen), a cup of strawberry cheesecake and strawberry gelatin, and the Shining Star Milk Kanten (226 yen), a creamy agar dessert.

Or, if your cravings are of the spicy type, you can opt for the Fire Flower Fire Curry Bun (140 yen) and its tomato curry filling or Bowser’s Fire-Breathing Super Spicy Karaage Roll (354 yen), where both the fried chicken’s seasoning and sauce are extra hot.

Also, if you’re a Mario fan who finds yourself in 7-Eleven, you’ll want out check out the Ichibankuji prize lottery, where a 650-yen ticket gets you a chance at prizes including a Super Mario retrospective towel, glow-in-the-dark Boo soap dispenser, or Question Mark Block folding table.

The Ichibankuji lottery is going on now, and the Super Mario food line goes on sale February 5.

Forget King Koopa, and say hello to President Bowser.

When you stop and think about it, how successful is Nintendo’s Super Mario as a hero? Sure, he’s saved the day countless times, but those victories have always been temporary ones. Somehow, arch-nemesis Bowser always manages to come back and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom again in a year or two.

And now an even more diabolical ambition has been realized, as Bowser has gained control of Nintendo itself!

Hold on…we’re being informed that fictional turtle/dragon/dinosaur hybrids, in fact, cannot legally serve as executives of real-world companies. But there’s no mistaking the announcement made by Nintendo of America, which says that effective this April, the company’s president will be Bowser, as Reginald “Reggie” Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president since 2006, is stepping down.

Nintendo fans, Reggie has a message for all of you. Please take a look. pic.twitter.com/EAhaEl5oEJ

— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) February 21, 2019

Succeeding Fils-Aime will be Doug Bowser, a human being who’s currently Nintendo of America’s head of sales.

Given Bowser’s lack of scales, shell, or horns, it seems that he’s neither the identically named video game villain himself nor one of his numerous offspring. However, we can’t entirely rule out the possibility that he’s a reptilian monster with advanced shapeshifting and/or illusion-conjuring skills, what with his open animosity towards Mario and brother Luigi, as evidenced by this photo of Doug in which the plumbers are tied up behind him while the franchise’s enemy characters enjoy considerably greater freedom.

Still, in Fils-Aime’s video good-bye (in which he says he’s vacating the presidency in order to spend more time with family and friends), he says that the company is in good hands with Bowser, who joined Nintendo in 2015 and whose resume includes time at video game publisher Electronic Arts as well as Procter & Gamble, where Fils-Aime also previously worked.

Perhaps with Bowser now holding such a powerful position, fans can once again start hoping for Nintendo to legitimize the Bowsette fan-created character by giving her an official in-game appearance. However, Bowser’s sway may be limited by the fact that while he’ll soon be president of Nintendo of America, he still has to answer to Nintendo of Japan president Shuntaro Furukawa, perhaps because the character called Bowser has a different name, simply “Koopa,” in the Japanese editions of the Mario games.

It’s hard to believe that it’s only been about 10 days since Twitter user @ayyk92 drew the first illustration of Bowsette, the Super Crown-created princess version of the Super Mario franchise’s archvillain Bowser. Over the last week and a half, there’s been such a flood of Bowsette fan art that it seems like she’s been with us for a much longer time.

And actually, in a way, it turns out that she has.

This Sunday saw the release in Japan of The Art of Super Mario Odyssey. The book is an official collection of art from the production of Mario’s first outing on Nintendo’s Switch, in which the marque new play mechanic is Mario’s ability to toss a magical hat named Cappy at other living beings in order to fuse his body with that of his target.

While the book is full of official artwork and concept sketches, there’s one illustration in particular that’s grabbing people’s attention.

That right there is Koopa Peach (not to be confused with “Koopa-hime”/”Princess Koopa,” as the Japanese fan community calls Bowsette). The short concept manga shows Bowser, who’s been cornered by Mario, revealing that he has a fusion cap of his own, which he tosses at Princess Peach, merging his body with hers and boldly telling Mario “The real fight is just getting started.”

▼ A visual explanation of the difference between Koopa Peach (a.k.a. Bowser Peach) and Bowsette

— drizzle (@drizzle_and_sun) September 29, 2018

While this might at first look like a case of Nintendo piggybacking on the Bowsette boom, the book was released on September 28, just eight days after @ayyk92’s original Bowsette illustration. That window of time isn’t long enough for someone at Nintendo to stumble across Bowsette, design Koopa Peach, and have the comic make its way into the book before printing.

Add in the fact that Koopa Peach’s origin comes from the Cappy play mechanic of Super Mario Odyssey, as opposed to anything from the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe that Nintendo is currently hyping, and it’s clear that Koopa Peach existed well before the new-for-New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Super Crown or Bowsette.

▼ ”Have we all just been dancing in the palm of Nintendo’s hand?” wonders this Twitter user.

https://twitter.com/tukusi913/status/1045856496280453121

So now fan artists have three versions of “sexy Bowser” to choose from: the standard Bowsette, the tanned, red-haired alternative Bowsette, and Nintendo’s Koopa Peach. If you’re opting for the third choice, it’s worth remembering that while the Super Crown ostensibly turns the wearer into a pretty princess, Cappy instead combines the two bodies into a hybrid. Because of that, Koopa Peach’s body is usually more reptilian than Bowsette’s, often with spikes sticking directly out of her shoulders.

Also, perhaps because it’s the person who throws Cappy who retains sentience and control over the combined body, Koopa Peach almost always has a gleefully haughty demeanor, since her personality is that of the destructive dictator Bowser.

…some people would rather see Nintendo’s official lady Bowser standing right beside the fan-created one.

https://twitter.com/godzillatanaka/status/1046080141103968257

Of course, these paired portraits are a logical impossibility. Koopa Peach is a combination of Bowser, Peach, and Cappy, while Bowsette is a combination of Bowser and the Super Crown. Since Bowser is a required component for both transformations, the two characters can’t possibly exist side-by-side.

https://twitter.com/sisookurenkyu/status/1045718903463149568

But…wait! While they can’t both exist at the same time, what if Bowser put on the Super Crown, becoming Bowsette, and then Peach threw Cappy at her? Or, alternatively, If Bowser tossed the cap at Peach, turned into Koopa Peach, and then Koopa Peach put on the Super Crown? You’d end up with two more new characters, each one-third Bowser and two-thirds Peach, but mixed in different ways.

You know, at first we thought it was kind of weird that Bowsette is getting her own fan event in Japan this month, but with the seemingly endless possibilities of the Super Crown, maybe just one event isn’t going to be enough.
