Does this mean the candle isn’t any good?

Starbucks is famous for its limited-edition wares, especially in Japan where you can get everything from sakura mugs and tumblers through to chocolatey Valentine’s Day goods.

While most of these goods are only available for a limited time and disappear quickly from shelves, one product appears to have lingered longer than expected, because despite being released for Christmas, we were lucky enough to find it at one store in February.

▼ The product is the Starbucks Candle.

Officially called “Starbucks Moment”, this candle comes in three scents inspired by the chain’s tea and coffee blends, to evoke “the comforting and heartwarming moment of enjoying a cup of coffee or tea”.

The three scents available are Coffee & Spices, Yuzu Citrus & Tea, and Joyful Medley, the last of which is a seasonal tea blend released every Christmas.

▼ The Joyful Medley is the one we went home with.

Just because the candles are still available doesn’t mean they haven’t been selling well, as we haven’t seen them at other stores. Plus, at the branch we visited, there weren’t many in stock, and the Yuzu Citrus & Tea variety had completely sold out.

▼ As fans of the chain’s Joyful Medley tea, we were happy to get our hands on this candle before it sold out.

The box it came in had a cup-shaped blank message section for gifting, which was a nice touch, and upon opening it, we were immediately greeted by the familiar fruity, sweet and tart scent of the Joyful Medley tea blend. The way the scent had been replicated so perfectly was a testament to its careful design, and that thoughtfulness extended to the candle holder as well, which had the green mermaid on one side and check-boxes on the other to make it look and feel like a Starbucks beverage.

Pushing aside our temptation to drink the candle, we carefully lit the wick, which steadily increased our sense of joy. The splendid elegance of Starbucks’ Joyful Medley spread its scent throughout the room, while the warm glow of the flickering flame added a sense of enchantment to our surroundings.

We were pleased to discover that the aroma wasn’t overpowering like a lot of other scented candles – instead it added a pleasant, refreshing scent to the air, in a way that made us want to take deep breaths to enjoy it, which had a relaxing effect on the body.

Of course, candles like this need to be used with caution, as the flame should be fully extinguished and the wax slightly hardened before being covered with the lid for storage. A little extra care with wick trimming when necessary allows you to use the candle for longer, ensuring you get the most out of your investment.

At 3,800 yen (US$24.50) each, these candles sit on the more affordable end of the scented candle spectrum. Whether you’re a loyal Starbucks fan or a lover of scented candles, these are a great way to boost your mood and they smell so good we have our fingers crossed for a reed diffuser to be included in this year’s Christmas range.

Three never-before-seen candles, in scents inspired by the chain’s tea and coffee blends.

With Christmas just around the corner, Starbucks is here to deliver holiday cheer with a new range of festive goods. This year, the range includes mugs, cups, notebooks, ornaments and three never-before-seen candles that are bound to bring you joy this holiday season.

So let’s get straight to it, starting with the drinkware items, which are surprisingly scarce this year.

▼ Stainless Steel Gingerbread Mug — 473 millilitres (16 ounces), 6,250 yen (US$41)

▼ Double Walled Heat Resistant Star Glass — 355 millilitres, 3,300 yen

▼ Red Reusable Cup — 473 millilitres, 500 yen

▼ Red Reusable Cup + Drink Hole Cap Bearista — 473 millilitres, 1,150 yen

▼ The cute Bearista cap, which plugs up the drinking hole in the lid to stop spillage, can only be purchased as a set with the reusable cup.

▼ Now we move on to the gift cards and stationery, which outnumber the drinkware items in this year’s collection.

▼ Gold Notebook (1,950 yen)

▼ Red Campus Ring Note (650 yen)

▼ Red Cup Beverage Card (750 yen)

▼ Food and Beverage Card (1,100 yen)

▼ Red Cup Gingerbread Man Ornament (1,600 yen)

▼ Red Cup Bearista Ornament (1,600 yen)

▼ Cold Cup Tumbler Ornament (2,000 yen)

And finally, we have an entirely brand new offering — a candle collection called “Starbucks Moment”, with three scents inspired by the chain’s tea and coffee blends, to evoke “the comforting and heartwarming moment of enjoying a cup of coffee or tea”.

▼ Starbucks Moment Joy Inspired By Joyful Medley (3,800 yen)

▼ Starbucks Moment Refresh Inspired By Yuzu Citrus & Tea (3,800 yen)

Starbucks Japan’s Christmas ranges are hugely popular every year, but with candles now available, this is going to be one sought-after collection. The entire range will be released online from 8 p.m. on 31 October and in stores from 1 November, when the limited-edition Christmas drinks will also be on the menu.

Add a touch of pyrotechnics to your special day.

When you travel as much as some of our writers have, you’re bound to come across hotel rooms that just seem to suck the life out of you. They aren’t especially dirty or decrepit; that would at least be a little interesting. They just have a certain inherent bleakness that makes a prison cell look cozy by comparison.

▼ We’ve censored the photo to prevent an outbreak of depression.

This effect is heightened when staying on your birthday, as our writer Ikuna Kamezawa recently found while staying in Osaka. Staring at the narrow enclosure, it made her wonder, “Was I born for this?”

Still, when life hands you desolation, you make desolationaide, and that’s just what Ikuna did by heading down to the nearest Don Quijote discount store for a quick pick-me-up. While there, she stumbled along the Dream Candle Deluxe (for Birthdays) for 1,738 yen (US$11.75). The name really said it all in that it was a deluxe candle that automatically starts rotating and playing “Happy Birthday” when lit in a most dreamlike fashion.

Even better, it can be used as a photo stand after the initial flaming birthday celebration, making it a gift that keeps on giving. Sure, candles are usually meant to be given to someone else on their birthday as a surprise, but there’s no rule saying Ikuna couldn’t treat herself to one.

At 11:45 p.m. on 20 August, Ikuna prepared to set up her Dream Candle Deluxe (for Birthdays). Her birthday was on 21 August, so she expected to have it ready to go at the stroke of midnight to celebrate yet another year on the planet.

However, after opening the plastic bag inside the box, it turned out to be a lot more complex than she expected.

According to the box, she had to clear a radius of 15 centimeters free of flammable objects. By the way, she got permission from the hotel to do this first, which we highly recommend to anyone attempting the same thing.

▼ Her colleague Masanuki had bought a similar gadget from Temu and the entire thing caught fire.

The directions got a lot more difficult after that. At one point, Ikuna was told to cut a copper wire, but she couldn’t find a wire in the location shown in the diagram.

As she mentally wrestled with the Dream Candle Deluxe’s documentation, she noticed it had already passed midnight. Sadly, it wasn’t because her friends and family sent waves of birthday messages. The clock on the TV simply said so.

She had to get this thing going asap…

After a little while, she realized she was reading the instructions intended to set up the picture stand afterwards. It turned out all she needed to do for now was light it on fire.

So, without further ado, Ikuna rung in her birthday with the Dream Candle Deluxe (for Birthdays)…

After a sparkler descended to the bottom, the petals of the candle bloomed, revealing multiple little candles that rotated around to the melody of Happy Birthday.

It wasn’t especially amazing, but Ikuna felt a strange sense of accomplishment for having done it. It wasn’t so much the difficulty she had assembling it, but the fact she made an effort to change her fate and make this a good birthday memory rather than just being the victim of her circumstances. She considered that a sign of growth.

Our writer simply stared in silence as the candles burnt themselves out. It wasn’t a very happy birthday, but it wasn’t a horrible one either, so this was a win in her books.

It seemed like a good time to start putting together the photo stand. It was pretty handy, and in addition to photos, she could also put her own messages in it.

▼ “Happy Birthday, Kamezawa-san”

The next morning, Ikuna got up, and as she prepared to check out of her slightly less gloomy hotel room, she chucked the Dream Candle Deluxe (for Birthday) in the waste basket. It’s not that she hated it. It was just too awkward to travel around with.

Actually, she probably would have thrown it away even if she was at home. After all, it wasn’t the product itself that saved her birthday; it was the memories it created that will live on in the photo stand of her heart.

We try to set the night on FI-RE-AH!

Chinese online retail site Temu has been taking the world by storm with its rock-bottom prices. But our Japanese reporter Masanuki Sunakoma, who shops almost exclusively at the rock bottom, has frequented it for quite some time in search of the ultimate deal.

Just the other day, he found a sweet deal on a light for just 2 yen (US$0.01). However, Temu has a minimum purchase limit of 2,100 yen so he needed to fill up his cart with some other random items. Among them was a birthday candle for 345 yen. This item caught Masanuki’s eye because when you light it, it opens like a blossoming flower and spins while playing “Happy Birthday.”

▼ I guess the official product name is FLOWEr CaNd LEs.

That’s a lot of features for the price, so our reporter had high hopes for it and wasted no time opening the box. It didn’t come with instructions but that was OK since all he needed to do was light it on fire.

The design was very bright and festive and got Masanuki into the birthday spirit. It wasn’t his birthday though, so if you happen to be reading this on your own special day, this one’s for you, babe.

The top-down angle was hard to reach with a conventional lighter, so he decided to bring out his turbo lighter to get this party rolling.

It lit up well and all the candles worked in unison to create an impressive blaze.

Moments later the flower opened automatically with a mighty snap. It sent the tiny candles hurtling in every direction like some kind of candle tosser – or “flame thrower” if you will.

All the while, the soothing sounds of “Happy Birthday” played with all the fidelity of a pager ringtone.

Masanuki was so engrossed in getting a good shot of this thing in action that he failed to notice the fireball plop onto his tabletop.

The song was also somewhat distracting him from the hazardous situation developing before his eyes.

It wasn’t until a flaming flower petal spun in front of him that he noticed something was terribly wrong.

The fire from the candles was spreading to the plastic of the flower itself which started to deteriorate rapidly.

Masanuki tried to control the blaze with a disposable chopstick because it was the only thing within reach. However, he accomplished little with his piece of kindling.

Fearing he was losing control of the situation, he had to put the camera down to deal with the fire in his living room. It’s a good thing he’s also our fireworks correspondent and has experience handling such matters.

He eventually managed to subdue the flames and took a photo of the smoldering wreckage which miraculously still played a defiant “Happy Birthday“.

While this is the worst thing that could happen with such a product, Masanuki does have a share of the blame for what happened. When reviewing the photographs, we can see that in using the powerful turbo lighter, he accidentally lit up one of the petals from the start.

That being said, had there been some instructions telling him not to use such a lighter, he could have tried something different. Also, the maker of this product really should use a less flammable material, considering its sole purpose is to be lit on fire.

In the end, we can’t in good conscience recommend this candle holder to anyone anywhere anytime, but on the bright side, his two-yen light worked really well.

Buying things at absurd discounts is always a game of chance with the odds stacked against you. So, it’s a good thing Masanuki is out there working tirelessly to separate the useless junk from the kind of neat junk.

Anime aromas capture the atmosphere from some of the studio’s most magical films.

We’ve stocked up on a lot of Studio Ghibli items to decorate our rooms over the years, but we’ve never really thought about bringing the scent of Studio Ghibli into the home before.

That’s all changed now, though, thanks to the release of a new range of reed diffusers and LED aroma gel lights that capture the mood of two of the studio’s most beloved films: Castle in the Sky and Howl’s Moving Castle.

▼ The new products come packaged in gorgeous Ghibli boxes.

The two reed diffusers are beautifully decorated, with an image of lead characters Sheeta and Pazu on the Castle in the Sky design, and lead characters Howl and Sophie on the Howl’s Moving Castle diffuser.

If you’ve ever wondered what the scent of Howl’s Moving Castle smells like, it’s a sweet blend of berries. The fruity scent is inspired by the fields seen in the movie during Howl and Sophie’s travels in the moving castle.

As for Castle in the Sky? That magical fantasy land smells like fresh soap, and it’s said to be inspired by the scene where Pazu meets the newly awakened Sheeta for the first time.

The LED Aroma Gel Lights are especially magical, as they’re designed to wrap you in the “warm light and scents” from the films. Simply press the button on the underside of the light to turn it on, and the heat generated from the lamp inside will warm the gel, releasing its scent into the room.

Again, the Castle in Sky light smells like soap while the Howl’s Moving Castle variety is filled with the aroma of sweet and tart berries. The Howl’s Moving Castle light is particularly gorgeous, as the design depicts Howl with his hands cupped, so it looks as if Calcifer, the fire demon, is alight in his palms.

Both the diffusers and gel lights are filled with dried flowers and other decorative items that match their scents, so they not only smell beautiful, but look beautiful as well.

The reed diffusers are priced at 3,300 yen (US$28.60) each while the LED aroma gel lights are priced at 3,520 yen, and both will be available at Donguri Kyowakoku retail stores and online from 20 November.

Tradition states that you put candles on a birthday cake equal to the number of years someone has been alive. Most people usually stop that practice after the age of 12 or 13 because the candles start to take up too much space on the cake. However, one particular family decided that they really wanted to give a warm and toasty reception to their 68-year-old grandma by loading up the birthday cake with the requisite number of candles. Needless to say, that was a better idea on paper than in practice.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BL6KHGZA9nE/?taken-by=tankobugadekita

Thankfully no one was injured in the blaze, and grandma seems to be recovering after using every ounce of her breath to blow out the candles. Whether or not this was a success is hard to tell, but judging by how much wax is covering the cake, it’s clear that it took them a while to light all the candles. As much “fun” as it looks in the video, we should always remember to be safe, especially when we are trying to celebrate an auspicious occasion. And if nothing else, be sure to keep a fire extinguisher handy, just so you don’t have to rely on the lung capacity of a 68-year-old.

Curry and gyoza so hot, it burns—literally.

Ever thought about owning one of those delicious-looking, fake food models Japan is famous for? Getting one custom made can set you back quite a bit, and although you can make your own at the Ganso Shokuhin Sample-ya in Asakusa like we did, arts and craft workshops aren’t necessarily everyone’s cup of green tea.

Luckily, however, Naooo3 House (pronounced Nao-san House), is here to save the day with their new line of edible-looking Japanese food candles, available now online as part of a collaboration between wacky Japan goods shop Village Vanguard and creative artists.

While Naooo3 House’s previous lines have included fruit, parfait, and everyday items like plastic bottles and deco tape, this time they’ve taken a more traditional route with Japanese food favorites like onigiri rice balls, dumplings, curry and rice, and oden (Japanese stew).

Who doesn’t love beer and edamame? But you can’t eat or drink these … because they’re candles!

candle 3

Candle and incense maker Kameyama Co., Ltd., who recently gave us sweet incense sticks that smell like popular Japanese fruit candy, recently announced the newest addition to their line of “favorite treats” candles. Yes, starting April 1, the company is offering edamame candles, and as you can see, they’re perfect recreations of the bright green beans that you’ll find at izakaya pubs across Japan and that go so well with an frosty glass of beer!

▼Did someone mention beer? Well, they’ve already turned that into a candle!  candle 4

Many of the products made by Kameyama are not for just practical use but actually meant to serve as offerings to deceased loved ones in the Japanese Buddhist tradition. The concept behind their whole “favorite treats” candles line is that you can make an offering of a small candle in the shape of a drink or food that a departed family member or friend particularly loved. And since they already had a beer candle—which apparently has been the most popular item in the series so far with sales of over 370,000 since its release—why not have an edamame version too, right?

▼ Isn’t the detail amazing? The beans look good enough to eat!

candle 2

Both the edamame and beer candles are priced at 680 yen (US$6.05) and are available through their Candle House online shop (although they unfortunately don’t ship overseas), or at specialty Buddhist shops and selected department stores.

▼ Now, that looks like a sight that should make some spirits quite happy!

By the way, there are many other interesting offerings in the “favorite treats” candles line, including sushi, miso soup and sweet dango dumplings, so we had good fun just looking at the pictures!

We have to say, we never thought candles could look so delicious! What kind of candle would you like to receive as an offering?
