There’s no better Sanrio star for this job than the golden retriever who’s named after custard.

At a quick glance, a Sanrio and Pastel collaboration might not seem so noteworthy, given that the majority of Sanrio’s cute characters have bright and cherry colors as a major part of their visual design. But we’re talking about capital-P Pastel, one of Japan’s favorite makers of custard pudding.

Of course, as Japanese dessert fans know, custard pudding is more commonly called purin in Japan, and so for this team-up with Pastel’s purin masters there’s no one more qualified to represent the Sanrio side of the partnership than Pompompurin.

▼ Pompompurin’s name is no coincidence, because even though he’s actually a golden retriever who wears a brown beret, he bears a very strong resemblance to a custard pudding topped with caramel sauce.

“We love ‘purin’” might seem like it should go without saying for Pastel, Sanrio, and their fans, but it doesn’t make the collaboration’s theme any less true, nor its lineup of coming-soon special Pompompurin purin sweets any less adorable-looking and delicious-sounding. And on the subject of adorableness, let’s now all take a look at Pompompurin’s butt.

Pompompurin’s behind is often referred to as his most charming physical feature, but it’s not so much the contours of his hindquarters as their, well, let’s say “cavity,” that gets depicted. In the case of the Purin Purin Purin-Pompompurin’s Bottom puddings, said cavity is rendered in chocolate, creating a scene of the Sanrio pooch diving headfirst into a cup of pudding.

▼ As for why it’s called the “Purin Purin Purin,” the third purin is a Japanese onomatopoeia for “jiggly,” so yes, this is a jiggly Pompompurin’s Bottom.

Now, on the off chance that “doggy tush” isn’t your preferred dessert motif, there’s also the Mogu Mogu Purin-Pompompurin’s Face pudding, identically priced at 680 yen (US$4.50)

Mogu mogu is also Japanese onomatopoeia, this time for the sound of someone happily munching or chewing a tasty treat, and the Pompompurin’s Face puddings come with little decorative flourishes that show him gleefully holding a spoon. A real version of that spoon can be yours as part of the Pompompurin Loves Purin Set (2,480 yen) which gets you two puddings, one of each end, and the utensil.

▼ As an added bonus, selling a set of two puddings and one spoon seems to be Pastel providing explicit permission to eat both of them yourself.

If you want to get even fancier, Pastel is also offering the Pompompurin Loves Purin à la Mode (700 yen), a cup of sponge caked topped with swirled whipped cream, fruit, and a mini custard pudding, with Pompompurin and his pals encircling it on the wrapper.

Or you can pare things back with the simple appeal of the Pompompurin Mini Purin (460 yen), which puts the caramel sauce at the bottom to make room for cocoa powder illustrations up top.

And if you’re of the opinion that true goodness comes from what’s on the inside, the Pompompurin Fluffy Roll Cake has a purin core surrounded by cream which is then surrounded by cake, with artistic touches that make it look like Pompompurin is leaping through the center.

▼ Somewhat confusingly, the Pompompurin Fluffy Roll Cake comes as either a “slice” (500 yen) or a “half” (1,280 yen), suggesting that there’s a purely hypothetical version that’s twice as big as the largest actually available one.

All of these go on sale at Pastel branches across Japan on March 1, and are slated to be around until April 30 with the important caveat of “while supplies last.” In addition, starting March 1 at Pastel branches and March 3 at supermarkets, you’ll be able to find Pompompurin’s Bottom Tarts (300 yen).

Pastel describes these as “custard-flavor brownies with caramel syrup” baked to a tart-like consistency. You’ll notice that they’re the only sweets in the lineup to not include purin itself, but they did make sure to include Pompompurin’s cavity.

Delectable custard pudding made with special ingredients and packed into an ice cream bar? Yes, please!

There’s really something to be said about a rich, delicious custard pudding. It’s used in lots of different recipes, but sometimes it’s just good to eat on its own with a spoon. Silky smooth creaminess…understated sweetness…melt-in-your-mouth softness…Mmm…

If you’re a fan of custard pudding, or maybe the type of person who loves their cream puffs to be packed full of creamy deliciousness, then you’ll probably want to check out a new ice cream bar just released by Akagi Nyugyo, maker of popular ice cream treats and popsicles like Garigari-kun. It’s called “Supreme Bliss Custard“, and it’s made specifically for fans of custard.

In fact, it’s basically just custard pudding frozen in a bar form–but luxury custard pudding. It’s made with the finest ingredients, including real vanilla beans, to bring out the best aroma, and Egg Royale eggs, which are developed specifically for pastry chefs and designed to draw out the flavor of the ingredients. It’s deliciously **rich but also light…**the perfect ice cream bar!

Supreme Bliss Custard (called “Shifuku no Custard” in Japanese) is available now throughout Japan for 173 yen (US$1.26) each, wherever ice cream is sold. While Akagi Nyugyo sometimes comes out with headscratchers like rice-flavored popsicles and castella cake ice cream, this one sounds like a no-brainer, so we can’t wait to try it.

In looks and flavor, this pudding knocked Mr. Sato’s socks off!

If there’s one thing our Japanese-language reporter Mr. Sato appreciates, it’s good food. And if it’s good food that reminds him of his youth, even better! That’s why he’s just pleased as punch that it’s so easy to find the old-fashioned pudding that used to be served in cafes during the Showa period (1926-1989), thanks to a boom in the popularity of “retro” stuff. That pudding, which is similar to flan custard pudding, has become so popular it’s not even retro anymore, and you can find it at many cafes, even those that aren’t from the Showa era.

In fact, Mr. Sato happened upon a cafe that served one of the most exquisite puddings he’d ever seen. He found it while walking in the west-Tokyo neighborhood of Nerima, near the Toei Animation Museum.

It was called Musashino Coffee, which Mr. Sato remembered had a sister branch not too far away in Tanashi. Though he’d known about it, he’d never been before.

A signboard outside the cafe advertised free, unlimited refills of hot coffee, iced coffee, and iced tea for 430 yen (US$3.30). That was pretty exciting for Mr. Sato, since it’s not something you see much anymore. He would’ve been grateful enough for a half-priced refill, but free refills? Sign him up!

Musashino Coffee opened on December 22, 2022, so Mr. Sato’s visit on January 23 was just after its one-month anniversary. Everything in the store was brand new, from the counters to the tables and chairs. While those old-fashioned, nostalgic Showa-style cafes are great, there’s something to be said for brand-spanking-new places like this one too.

A look at the menu revealed that they served mostly pasta dishes, but they also had a drinking snack menu too, which sounded great for after-dinner drinking sessions.

Finally, Mr. Sato came upon his heart’s desire: pudding (450 yen). It wasn’t called “Retro Pudding”, but the picture definitely had the same vibe. Of course, Mr. Sato had to order it, along with a hot coffee (430 yen), and since he ordered them together as a set, he received a 200-yen discount.

The pudding came in an old-fashioned glass bowl and was topped with whipped cream and a cherry, the very picture of a Showa-era pudding.

Can we get a round of applause? It was such a traditional pudding that he wanted to give it a standing ovation.

Just look at it! The caramel top was so glossy, it actually reflected the whipped cream like a mirror. The color and luster were simply perfection.

Eating it revealed another level of its nostalgic beauty. Mr. Sato just wanted to scoop it up and carry it home, but of course, he could not, so he steeled himself and fractured its perfect veneer with his spoon. Do you see the way the caramel sauce has soaked into the custard pudding, creating a beautiful gradation?

The sight of it resurrected memories of his youth, of warm, bright sunset glows when the blue sky becomes tinged with color as the bright red sun crosses beyond it. This gradation struck the hues of nature into Mr. Sato’s heart, brought poetry to his soul.

The custard itself was unbelievably smooth, without a single impurity. It had clearly been very carefully pureed through a sieve, and the temperature of its environment had obviously been very carefully controlled. It was a sublime pudding any way he looked at it.

Mr. Sato need not even explain how delicious it was. The bitterness of the caramel was just perfect. It was neither too sweet nor too strong.

Truly, what a time it is to be alive. Whatever else may happen, at least we can make a random stop at an unknown cafe in Tokyo and sink into complete bliss for just 450 yen. When it comes to life’s joys, beautiful and delicious food will always reign supreme in Mr. Sato’s heart.

Something else to check off our bucket (of pudding) list.

It’s no secret that we here at SoraNews24 are no strangers to eating abnormally large amounts of food, whether it be a huge bowl of tempura or a monstrously large cheeseburger. So when our reporter Tasuku Egawa heard a store in Tokyo had started selling giant custard puddings by the bucketload — literally — he rushed there right away.

The store in question was Tokyo’s branch of specialty custard pudding store Purin ni Koishite (rendered by the company in English as ‘I Love Pudding’). It was located in the arcade for Ikebukuro’s Metro station, near the ticket gates for the Yurakucho Line.

The bucket of pudding was a new addition to I Love Pudding’s custard-y line-up and went on sale August 2. Tasuku was sure they’d quickly get snapped up, so he planned to get there as soon as the store opened, but for a number of reasons ended up arriving over an hour later.

Luckily for him, there were still some buckets of pudding waiting for him. On a regular day, the store intends to make around ten buckets of pudding per day, but as this was the opening day the staff had made extra.

Tasuku immediately bought a bucket of custard pudding, costing him 2,000 yen ($14.90) and headed home, ready to get stuck into some creamy, jiggly goodness.

The fact that it comes in a bucket should be evidence enough, but it’s a pretty hefty pudding, weighing in at 800 grams (1.8 pounds). In comparison, a regular custard pudding from a convenience store is around 100 grams, so this bucket is a must-try for any diehard pudding fan.

It was also very tightly air-sealed, as seen in this photo. Tip it upside down and it doesn’t move at all, which was handy as Tasuku had to swing by work before heading home, so the pudding got jostled about in his bag a fair bit. But it didn’t budge a bit!

▼ The pudding also came with five sachets of sauces to drizzle on top.

But the time for admiring how the pudding looked was coming to a close, and it was time to get stuck in.

Despite the pudding’s hefty size, Tasuku decided to eat the whole thing by himself (as expected of any self-respecting SoraNews24 reporter). Like most people, Tasuku had always longed to able to boast to his friends, “One time, I ate a whole bucket of pudding” and this seemed like the perfect chance to make his dream come true.

The bucket of pudding came in at a whopping 1,590 calories, but sometimes you have to do the unthinkable to make your dreams come true… maybe he could do an extra workout tomorrow to make up for it.

The pudding looked pretty robust, making Tasuku eager to breach its custard-y surface, so he grabbed a spoon.

As expected, the spoon stayed completely in place. What a sturdy pudding!

After he eventually managed to scoop up some pudding on his spoon, Tasuku could see tiny black grains of ground vanilla bean, giving the pudding a strong vanilla aroma.

He decided to try the pudding first without any of the sauce and was pleasantly surprised. The taste of the pudding wasn’t overly sweet, but that was perfect, as it meant it went well with the vanilla aroma.

Tasuku also gave the pudding’s texture two thumbs up; just the right amount of firmness whilst still being creamy and jiggly.

The pudding was already excellent without the extra sauce, but Tasuku wanted the full bucket of pudding experience, so grabbed a sachet of caramel sauce. How would it go with the mild sweetness of the pudding? Would the sweet caramel sauce send Tasuku’s senses into a sugary overload?

Not at all — in fact, the caramel sauce had something of a bitter taste, which went well with the sweet aroma of vanilla.

Eating from a bucket was fun, but Tasuku wanted to see how the pudding looked on a plate, so he tipped it upside down once more and waited for the satisfying squelch as the pudding slid out from the bucket.

Even though Tasuku had already taken a few spoonfuls of pudding, it still stood firmly on the plate, maintaining its perfect form. As expected of such a hefty pudding!

But herein lied a problem — while he had already established that the pudding was perfectly delicious by itself, Tasuku really wanted to drizzle some sauce on the top. However, the five sachets that came with the pudding didn’t seem like they’d be enough — one sachet was enough for maybe two mouthfuls of pudding, and Tasuku estimated there were around twenty mouthfuls of pudding left.

Luckily for him, the store also sold jars of caramel sauce for 500 yen (US$3.73), and by some miracle Tasuku had been forward-thinking enough to pick some up. Nice!

▼ Now he was free to douse his pudding in delicious caramel sauce.

A huge pudding covered in lashings of caramel sauce was just what the doctor ordered! Well, probably not an actual doctor, who was probably despairing at the sheer amount of sugar and fat that Tasuku was happily gobbling up, but who cares about gaining a little weight when you can dip some creamy custard pudding in a sea of caramel sauce?

If you too wish to douse a giant bucket of pudding in caramel sauce, you can buy both from the Ikebukuro or Kobe branches of I Love Pudding. You can also use their online store, although the bucket of pudding proved so popular that at the time of writing, orders won’t be delivered until September 21 at the earliest.

If the idea of drenching your dessert in caramel sauce doesn’t appeal to you, there are other things you can do with an absurd amount of custard pudding.

A whole kilogram (2.2 pounds) of custard pudding, to be precise.

It’s no secret that the team here at SoraNews24 love Japanese custard pudding, called purin in Japanese. We’ve tried it with natto, with liquor, we’ve even eaten it in butt form — we just can’t get enough of its creamy deliciousness.

Arguably, SoraNews24’s biggest purin fan is Mr. Sato, who loves purin so much he buys it in bulk. Buying in bulk certainly gives you more bang for your buck, but you might end up having to throw most of it away, because it’s just too much. It seemed like this might be the case with Mr. Sato’s latest discovery, found at wholesale supermarket chain Gyomu Super — a whole carton of custard pudding goodness.

▼ Even on the carton, it says there’s enough purin here for seven to eight servings.

At a glance, it might be easy to mistake this for a regular carton of milk, but as Mr. Sato opened the top, he was met with a glorious sight…

A whole carton of jiggly purin, weighing in at one kilogram (2.2 pounds)! Just seeing it like this wasn’t enough to appreciate the sheer volume of creamy goodness, so Mr. Sato found the biggest dish he owned and carefully slid the purin out…

It just barely fit on the plate. There was no way Mr. Sato would be able to eat all this purin by himself…!

So Mr. Sato decided to do the only thing he knew how and experiment in the kitchen. In the past, we’ve tried out custard pudding on toast with pleasing results, but what if you were to make custard pudding in toast, a.k.a custard pudding French Toast?

If you want to cook along with Mr. Sato, you’ll need:

First of all, Mr. Sato added the purin to a saucepan and added milk — just enough to barely cover the pudding.

He then melted down the pudding milk mix, continuously stirring it to avoid burning. If you want to add sugar, add it in here. Once the mixture is melted, leave it to cool down.

Next, soak your bread in the mixture. If you want maximum sweetness, Mr. Sato recommends letting the bread marinate for an hour or so.

Once your bread is suitably soaked, melt some butter in a frying pan and add the bread. Once the bread is nice and brown on both sides, it’s ready!

▼ Ta-da! The One-Kilo Custard Pudding French Toast

At a glance, it looks just like regular French toast, but hidden in every bite is delicious purin-y goodness, like a creamy custard ninja waiting to attack your taste buds. Despite the huge volume of purin used, though, Mr. Sato felt it wasn’t as sweet as expected, so if you’re a fan of sweet treats he recommends adding some maple syrup or caramel sauce.

If you have an excess amount of Japanese pudding lying around and aren’t sure how to use it up, give this recipe a try! Alternatively, you could go the traditional route and make this world famous French toast using more conventional ingredients. Either way you choose, you’ll end up with a delicious sweet treat!

Electronics aren’t the only things coming out of Akihabara these days! If you’re a pudding lover, you’ll be thrilled with this tasty custard dessert, something that karaoke and leisure company Pasela has on their menu at their newest venture, bakery Honey Toast Cafe.

And that’s not all! The custard dessrt is served in the cutest little pottery honey pot which you can take home with you!

With the entire first floor of the giant leisure site being a bakery, you can enjoy a variety of bread and sweet treats- this pudding included- before heading up to the seventh floor to scream into a microphone.  Or, if you don’t need to let off steam with a little karaoke, you can remain downstairs and go straight to the pudding!

Pasela Resorts Akihabara Multi Entertainment Center just opened this new branch on November 22nd. True to its title, Pasela offers much more than just standard karaoke services.  As annexes to fancy karaoke lounges, they run several restaurant bars which collaborate with game themes like Thunderbirds Cafe, CAPCOM Bar, and Luida’s Bar Dragon Quest.  They also rent party rooms.

The two custard dishes available at Honey Toast Cafe are a standard Honey Toast Pudding and a Honey Toast Caramel Pudding.  The cute honey pots they are served in provide a nice big serving of pudding and look like they might be a bit bigger than a standard sized Japanese rice bowl, so you know that you really are getting a hearty serving of custard pudding!

Of course all this adorable packaging would be lost if the taste didn’t live up to the presentation. But it does!

Each of these custards has a firm outside layer which gives way to a soft creamy pudding when you push your spoon into it. When you take a bite, you’ll find that this dessert is melt-in-your-mouth delicious!  It’s not too sweet, and is light enough so that even with a hefty serving it’ll disappear from your pot fast. The Honey Toast Pudding has a touch of citrus giving it a lighter than you might normally expect from a pudding.  The caramel pudding’s flavor, meanwhile, is not at all over-powering and really brings out the natural sweetness of the custard dish.

purin2[1]

The price is 980 yen ($12.25 US), but considering the volume of the serving and the fact that the cute honey pot can be taken home and used as you wish, it’s not a bad buy at all!
