When the newest generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, were announced in February, fans were pretty excited for a whole new generation of Pocket Monsters to meet, train, and adventure with. With the release of the official trailer, which was filled with beautiful scenery, interesting gameplay, and adorable new Pokémon, our anticipation grew exponentially.

But after recent announcements that certain beloved aspects of the series will be omitted from the new games, fans have been left feeling disappointed and deflated, leading some to even call for a boycott.

▼ Sword and Shield trailer

For one, it was announced that there will be no Mega Stones or Z-Crystals in the new games. Mega Evolution, introduced in Pokémon X/Y, and Z-powers, brought to us in Pokémon Sun/Moon, will no longer be an option for powering up your Pokémon against strong opponents. Presumably, they’ll instead be replaced with the ability to make your Pokémon giant and super-powered, called Dynamaxing, which we caught a glimpse of in the trailer. But, while many adult fans probably won’t mourn the loss of either Mega Evolution or Z-Powers, many are wondering, why waste resources on introducing something new when there are already systems in place?

That also ties in to what fans are really upset about: the fact that the games will not have a National Dex, and you won’t be able to play with all of the Pokémon in the series. That means, unlike previous games, you won’t be able to catch all of the Pokémon and complete your Pokédex, but more than that, it means that fans won’t be able to bring over their favorite Pokémon from older games, via the Pokémon Bank, to use in Sword and Shield.

This isn’t exactly new for Pokémon games, since older games did not always have the technological capacity to import Pokémon from earlier generations, but Nintendo and Game Freak have since made great efforts to make it possible to collect every Pokémon in each of the last few games, so fans have come to expect the same experience from the latest installments.

Producer Junichi Masuda and director Shigeru Omori, who spoke about it on stage at E3 last week, said there was logistical reasoning behind what was a “difficult decision”:

“Since we switched to the Nintendo Switch, we’ve been able to design even more lively Pokémon with even more beautiful graphics than ever before, but on the other hand, compared to other games, it’s taken us far longer to do so. With the new Pokémon and the new forms of old Pokémon, we’d be required to design over 1,000 characters. Because of that, it was very difficult to strike a balance between making quality designs suitable for the new hardware, designing a fresh and lively reflection of each Pokémon’s personality in battle, and creating compatibility within the game. Those were the circumstances behind this decision, and we came to the conclusion that it will be difficult for future games from here on out to have all of the Pokémon make an appearance.”

Said Director Masuda, but many fans think the explanation is a cop-out. Many said they would rather have all 800+ Pokémon in the game than a new power-up like Dynamaxing, and others criticized that Game Freak isn’t efficiently using their resources; they believe they already have the models for the old Pokémon, so they might as well use them. Others complained about the quality of the “high quality designs” featured in the trailer:

Perhaps intending to make up for it, Nintendo is planning to release another game, called Pokémon Home, which will apparently be like a new Pokémon Bank, into which you will be able to import Pokémon from Sword and Shield, previous 3DS games like Sun and Moon, and Pokémon Go. But fans are still not pleased with the development, and have turned to Twitter to express their dismay:

“I understand that developing games is difficult, and I’m thinking that it can’t be helped…but I do think it’s sad that we can’t use certain Pokémon, including Megas, in the game. If I can’t use Mega Lucario then that essentially means I won’t see my favorite Pokémon in the new game.”
“There’s talk of all the work and yadda yadda, but I was hoping they would recycle the resources they used to make the Let’s Go games and Pokémon Quest.”
“It’s a tough problem, but if they were going to limit the Pokémon they might as well have just gone all in and done only new Pokémon.”
“Even if they don’t make it in time for the release date, it’d be nice if they could have DLC where you could play with all the Pokémon eventually.”

Though Japanese fans were also displeased with the news, fans from other parts of the world were the most vocal about their disappointment, and Twitter has been full of criticism, including intentions to boycott the new games, using the hashtag #BringBackTheNationalDex:

Whether or not Game Freak will listen to the pleas of its fans remains to be seen, though judging from the weighty consideration that went into the decision, it doesn’t appear likely that, at least for the upcoming games, there will be a chance to complete the National Dex. True, there could be DLC in the future, but at the moment, Director Masuda has said they have not decided if there will be any, so maybe it’s best not to get our hopes up.

Well, perhaps we’ll have to wait for Pokémon Home, which is planned for an early 2020 release, to see if it makes up for this important missing piece. In the meantime, hopefully the beautiful graphics and new gameplay of the Sword and Shield games, which come out in November, will be worth the sacrifice!

Development of the much-anticipated title is progressing smoothly, or is it really?

Video game giant Square Enix shocked the world with a nostalgic trailer of a Final Fantasy VII remake, fulfilling fans’ desires to revive one of the most iconic RPG games ever made.

Now, almost three years after the reveal, the company has put up an ad looking for a talented battle planner and a level planner to join their team, two vital roles that should probably have been filled early during development.

▼ What on earth is going on?

According to the recruitment website, the battle planner will be in charge of establishing a robust combat system, designing enemies and bosses, as well as creating a leveling system dictating players’ growth and parameters throughout the game.

The level planner is in charge of constructing workflows for locations and coming up with various level layouts using the game design tool, Unreal Engine 4.

▼ Wait, so the combat sequence we saw
in the awesome trailer wasn’t the real thing?

▼ You have to admit, it does bear a striking resemblance to
Final Fantasy XV’s real-time combat system that was released a year later.

So what we saw in the trailer could very well be a battle engine borrowed from early Final Fantasy XV as a placeholder for the E3 2015 reveal, with models of Cloud and Barrett slapped on.

Square Enix has remained tight-lipped on the title’s progress, but what’s worrying is that recruitment of such core members has been underway since last month, indicating that they’re either truly looking for the cream of the crop or having trouble finding suitable game designers.

Judging by the look of things, it seems unlikely that Square Enix will have much Final Fantasy VII-related stuff to show at this year’s E3, with fans having to wait a few more years before they can see main protagonist Cloud Strife dress up as a woman again.

Company’s recruitment page tells us we won’t have long to wait to collect the little critters all over again.

It’s been barely two years since Pokémon GO took the world by storm with its unique augmented reality gameplay, which later received an additional “Raid Battle” upgrade to breathe new life into the title.

A new Pokémon title hasn’t arrived on the Nintendo Switch yet, but just like how my mysterious Pikachu plushie always appears when I least expect it, it’s only a matter of time before the creature-catching game turns up on the console.

Good news is, Twitter user @pixelpar seems to have stumbled across a clue suggesting that it would arrive as early as this year.

▼ The hype train is real.

Looks like the initial European translations for Pokemon Switch are planned to be completed between April - June. They will the undergo localisation editing. Editors are being hired on a minimum 6 Month contract.

— Pixelpar (@pixelpar) February 11, 2018

A peek at available job openings at The Pokémon Company International career page reveals that they’re currently looking for French, German, Italian and Spanish localisation editors who will work closely with freelance translators.

Successful applicants will sign a contract lasting at least six months, with work scheduled to commence between April and June. Which, incidentally, also coincides with the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) to be held in June 2018.

▼ CEO of The Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara, also dropped a big hint that they were working on a “core RPG Pokémon title” at last year’s E3.

All these point to a potential brand new Pokémon Switch game reveal at E3 2018, after which localisation would likely begin in earnest.

So when will the title be released? Going by the six-month contract for localisation editors starting from June, an optimistic ballpark estimate would be in December 2018, just in time for Christmas if things go smoothly.

Another good guess would be 27 February 2019, which would be just as awesome since it’s actually Pokémon’s birthday. Either way, it won’t be long before our adventures with trusty buddy Pikachu begin once again.

Nintendo will hold a Nintendo Treehouse presentation for this year’s E3 event on Tuesday, June 14 at 12:00 p.m. EDT that will feature live gameplay from the new The Legend of Zelda game.

Nintendo revealed the game was in development in 2013, and revealed the game’s first gameplay footage in 2014. While originally planned for release in 2015, it was pushed back into 2016, and then delayed again to 2017. While originally slated for release only for Nintendo’s Wii U console, it is now slated for simultaneous launch for both the Wii U and Nintendo’s as-yet unrevealed “NX” platform.

The Nintendo Store in New York will livestream Tuesday’s Nintendo Treehouse presentation, and will also have a playable demo of the game.

the-last-guardianSince Sony first revealed the game in 2009, the game has undergone numerous delays in production. Game director Fumito Ueda announced his departure as a full-time Sonyemployee in December 2011, though later confirmed that the game was still under his creative supervision in 2013. Scott Rohde, the PlayStation software product development head for Sony Worldwide Studios America confirmed last June that the game had not been cancelled. SonyWorldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida stated in the same month that they (Sony) “really don’t want to release piecemeal information until we can say this is The Last Guardian – so we ask you to wait.”

In its 2009 announcement, Sony originally slated The Last Guardian for a 2011 release, but since failing to release it on that year, it has not specified a new release date for the game.

The Entertainment Software Association will hold this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) trade fair from June 16 to June 18 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

In honor of the world’s biggest gaming convention, Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus were put under one roof for a head-to-head virtual reality battle this week. Both offer players the chance to experience a level of immersion unlike anything that has gone before it in the world of video gaming. Both are astounding feats of technology.

Having tried both out at E3, however, we’ve decided there was clear winner. Find out which VR did it best after the jump!

Both VR technologies are still being worked on, and the demos we experienced this week are by no means representations of what finished games will be like, but right now I can’t help feeling that one of the two has a definite edge at this stage in the game. Let’s take a look at how Sony’s Project Morpheus and the Facebook-backed Oculus Rift experiences compared at E3.

Wearability

Project Morpheus definitely felt better on my head; as well as a strap around the back, there’s an entire plastic section that rests on your forehead and is fitted around your noggin to adjust for the perfect, non-obstructive fit. Oculus Rift on the other hand had an elasticated head strap that squished the device into my face, similar to the sensation you get with ski goggles that are on too tight. With Morpheus, I wasn’t distracted by the device I was wearing at all.

▼ Ski goggles…I mean, Oculus Rift

▼ It’s…just a bit snug.
Oculus rift 1

▼ Project Morpheus, meanwhile, sits pretty…on your forehead.IMG_2963-2-4

Did the demos make your eyes bug out?

Oculus Rift: Yes
Project Morpheus: No

When testing Oculus Rift, I felt like I was watching a 3-D movie, and during the fleeting moments I had the headset on, my eyes started to feel strange, just like when you play your 3DS with the slider turned up high for too long. However, with Project Morpheus, my eyes had no problems at all adjusting to the technology, and I was free to immerse myself in the artificial world Sony had created to show off the device.

▼ A world filled with sharks. Hungry, hungry sharks.Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 3.25.52 PM

The demos

It’s hard to judge the two devices because the games I played on each of them were so different – both were pretty much just tech demos, after all. The Deep was perfectly catered to showing off what Sony’s VR could do, with a hungry shark swimming on all sides of your dive cage, while Alien: Isolation felt as if I were still playing a first-person video game (which it is) and I had to consciously remind myself to look around. It’s perhaps unfair to compare them as gaming experiences since I only have what I tried at E3 to go by, but based on the two demos, Project Morpheus brought a dynamic, fresh gaming experience; Oculus Rift simply added a non-essential, though admittedly immersive, peripheral to an already great 2-D game.

Who did it better at E3?

Oculus Rift threw away the best opportunity to showcase what their VR can do to a huge audience of media personnel. You can see their first mistake by looking at Sony’s and Oculus Rift’s booths here:

▼ Oculus Rift’s boothIMG_3010-2-2

▼ Sony’s boothIMG_3004-2-2

Oculus Rift’s booth was closed off with walls of what reminded me of particle board and the only way you could view what was going on inside was through small columns of windows; they could have welcomed attendees one and all, but it felt somehow hidden.

Sony’s Project Morpheus booth, on the other hand, was completely open to the showroom floor, inviting anyone to stop and watch what was going on, even if they didn’t strap the unit on for themselves. Large TVs (Sony brand, of course) faced outward, showing off exactly what the person using Project Morpheus was seeing, enticing attendees in. Sony is clearly very proud of its upcoming tech.

IMG_2964-2-2

Back at the Oculus Rift box, if you can find an open spot that isn’t occupied by the long line of people hugging the exterior walls, you can sort of get a glimpse of what games people are demoing, but only from certain angles.

IMG_3015-2-2

You’ll also see that every single player is sitting down in the living-room-style setup Oculus Rift created for E3. The experience feels very much like gaming as we know it today, albeit with some extra weight on the face.

IMG_3020-2-2

Over at Sony’s booth, you’ll see that people are standing, turning around, and moving their heads all over the place. Those trying out the Street Luge demo are nestled horizontally in a bean bag chair, using their bodies and head to shift themselves from side-to-side as they maneuver through a twisted mountainside highway, feet first. Others were fiercely punching at the air, Move controllers in hand, trying to bash at towering knights. Everyone really looks like they’re lost in the moment, as opposed to simply playing a video game.

IMG_2980-2-2

IMG_2963-2-2

Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 3.12.21 PM

Having both Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus in the same place at such a prominent event, the pressure was really on for the two top VR projects to impress. Oculus Rift, with its closed-off booth, short demos and decidedly sedentary players, squandered a golden opportunity to show the cynics and all of those Facebook-haters that virtual reality isn’t just for hardcore gamers, but can offer an exciting, immersive and dynamic experience. Project Morpheus had players positively exploring their surroundings, flinching and gesturing as they might in the real world, and for that reason the technology came across as that much more accessible and innovative.

The verdict

Never having experienced virtual reality before, I was really excited after getting a hands-on with Oculus Rift during the first day of E3 and I really enjoyed the experience. Project Morpheus, however, simply blew me away, immediately cheapening my encounter with the Rift. Both VR units are still far from finished, and even when the technology is ready to roll their success or failure will all depend on the experiences game developers create for them, but based solely on my E3 experience, at this point Sony’s Project Morpheus is the clear winner. Whether that will change in the coming months and years is anyone’s guess, but after our encounter at E3 one thing’s for sure: we’re incredibly excited about the future of virtual reality!

But fear not, RocketNews Nation, we searched high and low to bring you photos of sexy ladies, freebies, and costumed strangers from E3…just because you asked so nicely.

Only five women presented on stage at the major press events at E3, the video game industry’s huge conference, which took place in LA this week.

Sadly, that number won’t be surprising to anyone familiar with sexism in the tech industry, and the particularly appalling way women are treated in the video game industry.

But here’s the really shocking part. E3 actually featured more severed heads on stage than women: eight heads.

A lovely moment from “Assassin’s Creed”

severed-headGamespot

No kidding. Someone was actually counting. Danielle Riendeau over at Polygon kept a running tally of speaking women presenters after seeing a tweet by Vlambeer developer Rami Ismail:

Playstation continues the "more severed heads" than female speakers trend. #E3

— Rami Ismail / رامي (@tha_rami) June 10, 2014

Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony all had speaking women presenters.

Meanwhile, severed heads were featured from games, including “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” and “Mortal Kombat.”

In 2013, 59% of Americans played video games, according to the Entertainment Software Association. And of those people, 48% were female. So it’s not that women aren’t playing; it’s that they’re not being represented equally at the major press events. And that’s a shame.

Riendeau points out that companies don’t just randomly select who’s going to present for them. The decision is strategic, and not having many women presenters, sends a message.

She writes:

E3 is already a show that’s dominated by white men, and keeping the focus on those men during the most public events reinforces the feedback loop that the show is for, should represent, and sell to, white men.

And it’s not that there aren’t any women executives for companies to choose from. Several high-ranking execs in the gaming industry are women. (Even though one of them, Julie Larson-Green, who heads the Xbox team, was harassed because she’s a woman when she got the job.)

The message is loud and clear, not just at E3, but throughout the gaming world. For instance, Jenny Haniver, an avid “Call of Duty” player, chronicles her experiences being a female gamer on her website Not In The Kitchen Anymore. Since 2010, she has been posting recordings of how other gamers, usually men, act upon meeting a female gamer. As you can imagine, it’s not good.

mortal_kombatYouTube

Nintendo has tried to address the problem by creating a YouTube channel, called the Nintendo Girls Club, that’s aimed specifically toward young girls who like playing video games. Unfortunately, the channel is terribly sexist, and ends up perpetuating the stereotypes not ending them.

In an interview with Re/code, Aisha Tyler, a longtime gamer who was one of the five women presenting at E3, says she thinks that sexism in the industry is easing up.

The more people who come forward and talk about how much they love gaming, how much they talk about individuality and diversity, the more gamers of color that come out, and gay gamers that come out and everybody talking about what they love — that’s what the community has in common, a love of gaming.

Tyler not only presented for Ubisoft, but she’s also a character in the game “Watch Dogs.” She says that there is a shift in what kind of characters we see in video games. And that will lead to a shift in the mentality of the industry as a whole.

“I think we’re starting to see an evolution in characters, for sure. They’re starting to look more like the real world,” she says.

Here’s hoping that she’s right and that next year at E3, women will be at least as welcome as dismembered body parts. As Riendeau points out:

It wouldn’t hurt the publishers to pay more mind to diversity when choosing people to speak at press events. And it would certainly help make E3 a slightly more welcoming place for the rest of the 75 percent or so of people [besides white men] that make up the population.

Walking through the Los Angeles Convention Center, we can’t help but notice a certain game popping up in all sorts of unexpected places. From the nook in the vaulted ceiling to the women’s restroom, Sunset Overdrive, has taken over E3.

The gameplay for Insomniac Games’s energy-drink-poisoned zombie “awesomeocalypse” with a zany punk rock twist, Sunset Overdrive, debuted at E3. We’ve mostly been acquainted with the game’s protagonist in the official trailer, but that didn’t stop Insomniac Games from showing off its other secondary characters all over the expo.

Our first encounter with Sunset Overdrive‘s over-kill marketing was in the form of a bouquet of little pink gremlin-like characters.

IMG_2737

And a close-up:

IMG_2925

▼ This guy seemed to really like them…IMG_2727

They are constantly being handed out, so many of them have broken free or have been purposely lost around the convention center.

▼ Forever alone.22

There is also a huge pink gremlin staring down at E3 attendees from the ceiling…

IMG_2724

And a microphone standing on the floor, where a sign from the pink dude reads, “Ask me a question and prepare for a totally seriously unscripted answer.”

IMG_2732

Few people stepped up to the mic, but those who did were treated to silly quips in a high-pitched voice.

Even before you enter the North Hall of the convention center (where the Sony, Nintendo, and Xbox booths are located), you’re blasted in the face with a billboard taller than the “bouncers” guarding the doors.

IMG_2428

Even the restrooms are filled with Sunset Overdrive stuff. Awkward bathroom photos, AWAY!:

photo 2

▼ You’re not really expected to put your face in there are you?photo 1

▼ Yup, I did. That’s my “hurry up and take this before that girl in the stall comes out and sees what I’m doing” face.photo

But little did I know that I didn’t even have to embarrass myself by taking photos in the public ladies room because upon getting back to my hotel, I was greeted to this in my bathroom:

▼ Looks like the hotel’s room cleaners were busy!222

Sunset Overdrive‘s marketing team also created energy drinks, the kind found in the video game, that are given to anyone who plays the demo.

IMG_2613

▼ There’s even a custom vending machine!IMG_2626

Everyone who plays the Sunset Overdrive demo is also given a pretty cool T-shirt, turning E3-goers into walking billboards for the game.

As you might expect with all that publicity (and free give-aways), the lines to demo Sunset Overdrive were respectably long. We headed over to the booth to try our hand at grinding on rails and making giant orange monsters go boom. While we were waiting in line, a punk rock rabbit was giving us tips to playing the game.

34343

“Pretend the floor is lava” meant to stick to the high ground, “I don’t wanna see you standing around shooting, that’s a good way to die” was said to let us know that we need to be grinding on the pink rails liberally sprinkled all over the map.

After waiting for over an hour (this was a popular booth!) we stepped up to the controllers and were treated to around ten minutes of demo gameplay. Take a look at a few photos of the Sunset Overdrive booth:

▼ Each group of eight players (this is a multi-player and single-player game) were connected via headset and there was one Sunset Overdrive representative playing along with us to give us tips.IMG_2604

IMG_2608

IMG_2602

Here’s the gist of what we learned from our demo and tutorials while waiting in line: Sunset Overdrive thinks games nowadays are too serious and instead delivers a purely fun, absolutely insane orange oozing zombie-killing third person shooter. With outlandish weapons that literally make your enemies go “pop” (really, the ooze emitted from your fatal blast forms into the letters P-O-P), you’d be hard pressed not to smile while playing.

After all this hype and the (probable) hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on T-shirts, custom energy drinks, giant inflatables, and more balloons than E3 knew what to do with, we were afraid that Sunset Overdrive was simply overcompensating for a mediocre game. However, after playing the demo ourselves, we are happy to report that Sunset Overdrive is every bit of fun and crazy the trailers make it out to be.

Come October, you’ll find us grinding rails with our customized character in the insane open world that could only come from the minds of the folks at Insomniac Games.

Day Two of E3 has come and gone and we still can’t get enough of this crazy expo devoted to gaming. It was an absolute blast to play Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U and we feel so lucky to have had the chance to check out Sony’s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset (although, a slightly less terrifying demo would have been appreciated).

Here come the photos from DAY TWO!

If you’re a big gamer but weren’t able to attend this year’s E3, you may be wondering what the overall vibe is in amongst all of those giant, flashing screens and cardboard cut-outs. So before we headed back to our hotel to get some much-needed sleep at this end of this busy, busy day, we thought it might be nice to show you what each of the “Big-three’s” booth looks like this year. We’re nice like that.

▼ Microsoft’s booth

▼ Nintendo’s booth

Yes, I stood in the middle of everyone, twirling like a fool to bring you this shoddily shot video. You’re welcome!

The promoters of Just Dance 2015, Ubisoft’s sixth dancing game of the series, sure do know how to get people’s attention at E3. Songs such as “Happy” by Pharrell Williams and Run DMC’s remix of “Walk This Way” by Aerosmith already make you want to tap your toes. But they’ve also deployed cute dancers at the Just Dance booth to encourage the crowd to start, well, dancing. Even Wolverine couldn’t resist slicing the air with his claws to the game’s groovy beats.

And on Day Two of E3 2014, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the elusive unicorn…dancing with his hippo pal to “What Does the Fox Say.” Yeah, we don’t know why either, so you’d probably better just watch the video…

Bravo, Just Dance 2015 crew! Keep the crazy coming!

My hands are still trembling after demoing The Deep on Project Morpheus, Sony’s virtual reality headset. The game brings players into the middle of shark-infested waters with only a flare gun and a flimsy steel cage for protection. It’s this generation’s Jaws in a new, terrifying reality never seen before, and will no doubt scar another decade of children who will be too scared to take a bath. Check out our hands-on review and have fun laughing at me screaming to myself during my battle against a Great White.

Sony’s demo of Project Morpheus required you to pick up a ticket to schedule time with the device. We ran straight to the booth first thing in the morning and were glad we did as tickets for the entire day were completely gone within half an hour. With my ticket secure, it was time for a victory photo:

▼ It is mine!!!

IMG_2419

We had a little time to kill so we milled around the Nintendo booth right next door and headed back to the Sony section when it was our time to try out Project Morpheus. Stepping into the booth, the Sony attendant helped me put on my head set and, after a somewhat lengthy loading time, I was plunged into the sea where I found myself in a battered dive cage.

Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 3.12.21 PM

Everything’s all good, you’ve got your little flare gun in your right hand (yes, I realize I’m using both hands even though I didn’t need to, sorry) and you’re chilling out, able to look not only directly in front of you, but to the side and also behind. And then the shark comes and sh*t gets real. Excuse my language, that’s the only way I can accurately explain what it felt like to be in the world of The Deep.

Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 3.25.52 PM

There were moments when I was truly terrified (as you’ll see in the video) and felt as if I were actually submerged in a steel cage going up against an all-too-hungry shark. The puny pea-shooter of a flare gun you’re given to defend yourself with only adds to the desperation as you fiercely try to avoid gnashing rows of teeth. Just take a look at the video and tell me what I was seeing wasn’t truly terrifying:

One common complaint about VR is that it makes you feel a bit queasy, but none of our crew was feeling green after their plunge into the deep. However, we spoke with a few Sony folks running the booth and they admitted to feeling a little sick after trying out the Street Luge demo, which hurls players feet first down a mountain roadway full of cars.

If I had any complaint, it would be that the 5-minute demo (which is just a small snippet of the full version), was too long. I found myself lost in the dangerous world Sony had created, my heart racing as I desperately hoped for my comrades up top to “pull me up already.” Sitting here typing at the safety of my keyboard, I’m thinking I’d like to give it another go, but my still-trembling fingertips tell a different story.

We’ll be showing off our time playing Alien: Isolation with Oculus Rift and giving you a comparison later, but for now, I’ll just say that based on the two demos I’ve played at E3, Project Morpheus has hands-down won the VR war.

More to come!

SUPER SMASH BROS!!!! It’s been six years since we’ve seen a new version and this latest one, playable on Wii U and 3DS, did not disappoint. With new characters, like the Wii Fit Trainer and Little Mac, and new levels, including one where Pong starts playing right on the screen, the only thing that could have made it better was if we placed first in our battle and won a Nintendo T-shirt.

After playing Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, I have concluded that it’s, in a word, awesome (but it still can’t salvage my signature button smashing technique).

First off, here’s a look at the main part of the Nintendo booth, with their most anticipated game taking center stage:

▼ Just look at that giant screen!IMG_2026-2

IMG_2167

Aside from the elevated stage catering to the ridiculously huge screen, Nintendo also set up a bank of Wii U consoles in front of and behind each giant Nintendo-character-clad pillar, allowing four gamers to face off against each other in two Super Smash Bros. battles.

Nintendo panorama

▼ Mario was holding down the fort, watching over the dozens of players simultaneously playing Smash Bros. IMG_2170-2

As you might expect, there was a huge mob of people crowded around each console, pushing closer and closer to the screen for their chance to play the newest version of a classic. From the outside, it looked like utter chaos, completely devoid of any sort of orderly line. But once you immersed yourself in the madness, you realized it was just good old fashion living room rules, everyone keeping tabs on who was there first and reprimanding those who stepped up to the controller out of turn.

▼ A group of four choosing their players (unfortunately, Pac-Man did not make an appearance on this demo).
IMG_2164

▼ Little Mac, Mario, Mega Man, and the Wii Fit Trainer duking it out.
The Wii Fit Trainer did more yoga poses than actual fighting, proving it to be “the silly choice to make your friends laugh” and not a serious contender.IMG_2190-2

▼ The Wii U chillin’ out as we use GameCube controllers to smash each other.IMG_2179

▼ Check out some footage of Super Smash Bros. gameplay (skip to 00:21 if you’re not interested in the Nintendo booth)

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U reminded me of the good old days spent grappling with the three-pronged N64 controller, playing as Kirby because I always got knocked off the side and desperately had to use his sucking power to bring me back. Nurturing the same basic principle, but adding in new characters and new stages, it gives you plenty to feel nostalgic about, but also get excited for. It’s so good, it makes me want to buy a Wii U…almost.

***BONUS***

Nintendo also had their Amiibo interactive action figures on display, which are promised to work with Super Smash Bros. Take a look!

We’re here at E3, and we realize the focus should be on the games, but we did take a small detour and poked around the merchandise store for some sort of souvenir (somehow, I wasn’t satisfied with the mutant rabbit balloon swag from Sunset Overdrive). Overall I wasn’t impressed with the T-shirt designs or commemorative mugs inscribed with “E3,” but there was one exception.

First, a look around the merch store:

It was sea of black, grey, and subdued blue hues…with a splash of tye-dye and obligatory pink for the lady gamers. But as we made our way to the front counter, a bright pink sign caught my eye.

That’s right, official E3 condoms! I secretly hope they have the E3 logo on the actual condom so you can literally be inside of E3 while E3 is inside of you. But alas, I will never know. The thrill of the Destiny demo called me away back to the showroom floor and I left the merch store empty handed.

And don’t worry folks, Booth Babes, swag, and cosplay photos are coming up soon!

As pretty much every gamer in the world no doubt already knows, Super Smash Bros. is coming to Nintendo Wii U and 3DS this year. Along with everyone else, we’re itching to play it, but every time we pictured ourselves taking a mallet to Kirby‘s pudgy pink face, the same thoughts kept coming back to bug us: Do we really have to play the game with Wii remotes or the Wii U gamepad? Are we going to have to buy those “pro” pads that we’re frankly not all that fond of?

Thankfully, a series of officially licensed controllers modelled on the Nintendo Gamecube controller that we once loved so dearly is due to arrive sometime around the Wii U game’s launch, and they’re preeetty! Details and photos direct from the E3 show floor after the jump!

Coming from peripheral makers PDP and with the full backing of Nintendo, the controllers are designed with Super Smash Bros. specifically in mind come in three flavours similar to the special-edition Wii remotes Nintendo unveiled last month.

There’s Yoshi:

Princess Peach:

And of course Mario:

Unlike the original Gamecube controller, the Wired Fight Pad removes the “C” stick nub and instead throws in a real analogue stick to match the one on the left of the pad; something which will no doubt come as good news to serious Smash Bros. players.

We have yet to get hands-on with the new controllers, but they look great, and are exactly the kind of thing we were looking for. Well, almost.

Like other classic controllers for Wii, it looks like PDP’s new controllers will need to be plugged into Wii remotes in order to communicate with the Wii U console. Sure, if you happen to have a few old Wii remotes lying around that’s no problem, but if not that means having to go out and buy one for each controller you intend to pick up, not to mention a lot of wires and clutter under your TV and on your lap if you plan on holding any Smash Bros. parties. If they’d only made these controllers completely wireless, we’d have been absolutely ecstatic.

Still, the controllers are due to go on sale for just US$24.99 each, so we guess it’s not all bad…

Do you like dancing? How about hairy men with adamantium claws? Then we have the perfect video for you!

Day one of the E3 trade show is coming to an end but spirits remain high after Nintendo’s news this morning and promises of some pretty awesome-looking games. Just now in fact, as our reporters navigated the throngs of people over at the Nintendo area, they spotted none other than Marvel Comics’ Wolverine taking the Wii U version of Just Dance 2015 out for a spin, and he seemed to be having a great time.

For a guy who mostly just growls and slashes people, he can actually kind of move.

Stay tuned for more weird, awesome and nerdy stuff from E3 2014!

PlayStation TV, originally launched as PlayStation Vita TV in Japan, is coming to the US, Canada, and Europe this autumn, Sony has announced at E3.

The device allows players to stream gaming content to a television set not directly connected to a console, effectively making every TV in a person’s home a gameplay screen.

The original PlayStation Vita TV unit was launched in Japan in November last year. Unlike all of Sony’s other gaming hardware, however, the unit was not compatible with non-Japanese PlayStation Network accounts, something that gamers the world over who wanted to take their games from room to room bemoaned.

Sony has clearly been listening to its fans, however, as it was announced today during the company’s press conference that PlayStation TV would go on sale for US$99 this autumn. It will able to available as a bundle including a DualShock controller, an 8GB memory card, HDMI cable, and a game voucher for The Lego Movie Video Game, for $139.
