Beloved minor character gets a starring role in new Studio Ghibli release, and there’s a red bucket hat in store too.

Some English words get lost in translation when they’re adopted into the Japanese lexicon, and one of those words is the word “bobblehead“, which goes by both “ボブルヘッド” (“bobblehead“) and “バブルヘッド” (“bubblehead“) in Japanese.

When you think about it, though, the oversized wobbly noggins on bobblehead figures do have a bubble-like appearance and are essentially filled with air due to their hollow shape, so “bubblehead” isn’t a bad term to use. Either way, Studio Ghibli uses the word “bubblehead” to describe the bobbleheads they sell, and now they’ve pushed the envelope even further with a new “bubblebody” figure in the shape of Oshira-sama, the radish spirit from Spirited Away.

It’s nice to see this relatively minor character stepping into the spotlight, although rather than stepping it’s actually dancing, as it does in the movie when the stink spirit is cleansed and departs the bathhouse restored as the river spirit.

▼…and the fan that the character holds in its left hand is perfectly replicated.

The loincloth preserves the radish spirit’s modesty, and the Aburaya bathhouse is honoured with the abura kanji (“油”) on the pedestal it stands on.

On the back of the pedestal is “GBL”, Ghibli’s “American casual style” brand, which the product is sold under, and this rear view gives us a better look at the bubblebody design.

The top part of the figure is set on springs that have been specially adjusted to give the upper body just the right amount of jiggle and sway to mimic its dancing movements when pushed with a hand or finger.

▼ Oshira-sama is more than a bobblehead, it’s a bobblebody, or “bubblebody” as Ghibli describes it.

Peering beneath the character’s “hat”, which is actually a lacquered sake cup known as a “sakazuki”, reveals a green leaf design that resembles radish leaves and harks back to the glimpse of green we see underneath the cup in the movie.

If you like the radish spirit’s headwear, you can now mimic its style with the Oshira-sama Bucket Hat, which GBL has created as part of this new release.

The hat brings a pop of colour to any outfit, with the word “オシラサマ” (“Oshira-sama”) embroidered on the front…

The fabric inside the hat is adorned in a radish leaf pattern, so you can truly embody the spirit of Oshira-sama.

The Oshira-sama Bucket Hat retails for 6,600 yen (US$43.93) while the Oshira-sama Bubblebody figure is considerably more affordable, at 1,540 yen. Both items can be purchased at Donguri Kyowakoku stores and online from 17 February.

Creative YouTuber also makes Pokémon that actually charge phones, act as speakers, and more.

When I was younger, I like many others spent an ungodly amount of time daydreaming about Pokémon. More specifically, what I would do if Pokémon existed in real life, and who would be on my team of Poképals.

And while Pokémon in real life might not be a thing yet, thanks to a creative YouTuber who goes by the name of Clay Yoshirin (@plasmaclusterha on Twitter), we may be one step closer to our childhood dream coming true.

Clay Yoshirin makes incredibly detailed models of Pokémon using, as their name suggests, clay. But not just normal clay models, ones with a creative touch that brings them closer to reality.

Clay Yoshirin has amassed quite a collection of handmade Pokémon sculptures, and their latest creation is just as impressive — a Froslass made to look like a Japanese doll.

What’s particularly impressive is how they made it — namely, using an empty bottle of beer as the base. 

Molding the clay around the beer bottle base, Clay then made the arms, head, and obi sash, but there was something missing — Froslass’s icy crystals horns.

Rather than making some clay ice crystals, Clay instead called up fellow YouTuber and sweets creator Whip Sugar to commission a pair of edible ice horns made from jewel candy, known as kohakuto in Japanese.

They described the jewel candy horns as “sweet and delicious”.

Japanese netizens fell in love with Clay Yoshirin’s creative clay creations, and their Twitter and YouTube are full of awe and admiration.

“I used to make Pokémon from clay when I was younger, but this is like 500 times better!”

“I’m constantly impressed with how creative you are, Yoshirin!”

You’re already a tax write-off.

Government schemes aren’t generally referred to as “cool.” In fact, even the Cool Japan initiative turned out to be anything but. However, the Furusato Tax system might just qualify as something actually cool that the government cooked up.

The way it works is simple: People are able to donate money to a rural community which is tax deductible up to a certain amount defined by their income. In exchange they can get a special “gift” product that is produced in the area.

Or, in the over-simplified terms: In Japan if you buy certain things from smaller cities and towns, you can get them refunded via your taxes.

Free stuff is always great, but this is especially neat because it gives people a chance to browse the wide range of goods made all over Japan. Since this is essentially a marketplace, these areas are all vying for donations and tend to put their best foot forward in terms of gifts ranging from swords to sake to the occasional chance to become mayor.

For example, here we have a lovely bust of the hero of Fist of the North Star, Kenshiro, known around the world for poking guys in head and then saying, “You’re already dead,” just before their brains explode in a bloody mess.

Now, you too can be reminded of all that ultra-violent post-apocalyptic fun with this life-sized sculpture of Kenshiro’s cold stare in your home! The 70-centimeter (27.5-inch) statue can be gotten with a donation of 150,000 yen (US$1,450) to Kadoma City in Osaka Prefecture.

The reason Kadoma can offer this item is because it is home to Kaiyodo, a world-famous figure maker with licenses from a range of manga, anime, and tokusatsu hits.

The catch is that in order to get the full 150,000 yen donation for the Kenshiro bust refunded, your income would have to be at least between nine and 10 million yen ($87,000 – $96,000) a year depending on your household situation.  Luckily, Kadoma City and Kaiyodo are also offering lower cost alternatives such as Fist of the North Star’s Jagi bust (not quite life-sized) for 90,000 yen ($870) and a figure of the Evangelion Type-08 β-ICC, seen in the first trailer for the upcoming final film, for 45,000 yen ($430).

Of course, not all gift items for Furusato Tax donations are anime busts and robot figures. There’s a fascinatingly vast array of things to choose from such as ice cream, steaks, and primo seats for an air show to name but a few.

Did you ever expect Pompompurin to actually have bones?

If you’re the type of person who likes things that are both cute and spooky/macabre–which are known as kimokawaii in Japanese–then you’re going to love model and toy maker Mega House’s newest lineup of Sanrio collectibles: the Kaitai Fantasy collection. 

These are Sanrio figures that you can disassemble to see their skeletons and muscular makeup! This is actually part two of the series, which was first released in December last year with figures of Hello Kitty and My Melody. This year’s selection includes three more popular characters, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, and Kuromi, plus a new 45th anniversary My Melody figure.

These Kaitai Fantasy figures are made up of 10 or 11 parts each, including their skeletons and pink innards. They’re designed so that you can put them on display or have fun taking them apart and putting them back together again. It’s totally your choice!

But you’ll definitely want to take them apart at least once…don’t you want to know for sure that Pompompurin actually has a skeleton and isn’t just made of pudding?

Plus, each of the characters’ insides is slightly different. Of course, each one’s skeleton is unique, but the brains and hearts, which are removable, also vary in size and shape. For example, Cinamorroll’s heart is shaped like a cinnamon roll, and Pompompurin’s like a flan!

Each one’s eye sockets are also different shapes, like the two figures that came out last year. The shape depends on the character’s personality and style; for example one of My Melody’s is a heart, and the other is round. This adds to both the cute and the creepy factor, making these excellent kimokawaii accessories.

As you can see from the packaging, which displays all four figures instead of whichever one is in the box, the 55 milimeter (2.2 inch) figures are randomized, so you don’t know which one you will get until you take it home and open it. One mystery box retails for 850 yen (US$8), but you’ll probably want to buy a bunch so you can collect them all. Good luck!

It might be a bit pre-emptive, but with a lot of recent events being postponed or cancelled due to a certain Miss Rona, a lot of us are looking forward to Halloween. After all, you don’t really need to even leave your house to celebrate it; just settle down with a pizza and your favourite scary movie. For horror fans, it’s the best night of the year. But what about those who need a cuddly companion to keep them company during the scarier scenes?

The mere sight of this feudal Japanese shadow hero will strike fear into the hearts of criminals.

The idea of combining Batman with samurai and ninja elements might sound ludicrous at first, but the recent action-packed Batman Ninja anime has proved that the concept was nothing short of brilliant.

Now, Japanese hobby product manufacturer Good Smile Company has created limited-edition figurines of the crime-busting vigilante in his cool feudal Japan armor. Measuring an impressive 70 centimeters (27.6 inches) in height, only 1,000 of these will ever be made.

Based on art by Takashi Okazaki, the genius behind the anime film’s character designs, the figure captures the moment Batman launches off the top of a castle roof, shedding off his bulky outer samurai-like armor in favor of a stealthy ninja outfit.

Get ready for the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah figure that is smashing its way into our hearts.

Released back in 1995, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was set to be the final Godzilla movie and made big news when Toho announced that it ended with the nuclear monster’s death. The 22nd Godzilla movie was the last in the “Heisei” series and signaled an end to the constant stream of monster movies being released. The franchise has seen a revival recently with the successful 2014 Hollywood reboot, which has spawned sequels, and a Japanese reboot directed by famed Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.

However, the small child in all of us want to go back to the simpler days when Godzilla was a man in a suit rampaging around on a miniature set of Tokyo. Thanks to S.H. MonsterArts and our imaginations, we can replicate that with a brand new figure based on the classic 1995 film.

Dubbed “Burning Godzilla” this 16-centimeter (6.3-inch) tall figure is priced at 9,504 yen (US$89.70). Pre-orders are already underway online and delivery of the fantastic looking toy will begin in December 2016.

In the movie, Godzilla’s heart, which acts like a nuclear power plant, was going through a meltdown so Godzilla radiated heat, light and smoke. The spirit of that meltdown is beautifully represented in detail on this figure, and you’ll be able to recreate all the fabulous scenes you remember from Japan’s top grossing film of 1996.

We’re sure any Godzilla fan would love to add this top-notch figure to their collection and we can’t blame them. With (hopefully) great movies like Godzilla Resurgence coming out and awesome toys like this, Godzilla will continue to reign as the King of Monsters!

Bandai’s next Dragon Ball figure will be of Vegeta, the fiercely proud Saiyan Prince, and yes, he really will be shaking (or vibrating, actually) with fear!

Remeber the figure of Yamcha looking very much dead after being blown up by one of the Saibamen, a bioweapon used by the Saiyans? Well, Japanese toy maker Bandai has announced another amusing and incredibly realistic Dragon Ball figure, this time of Vegeta.

Nowadays, Dragon Ball fans have gotten used to thinking of Vegeta as Goku’s fighting partner and Bulma’s husband. (In fact, based on what this writer has been seeing on the currently airing anime Dragon Ball Super, it even looks like Vegeta is becoming more and more a caring husband to Bulma.) But fans will also recall that there was a time when Vegeta was a ruthless monster who thought nothing of mass destruction and murder.

The new figure shows us a Vegeta from such a time, specifically Vegeta trembling and sweating in fear and even crying after being confronted with the then impossibly powerful final form of Frieza, one of Dragon Ball’s best-loved villains. And the best part is that the stand comes with a battery-operated vibrating function that realistically recreates Vegeta’s trembling movements.

▼ The detailed facial expression clearly shows the fear and sense of utter hopelessness Vegeta feels upon realizing how unbelievably strong Frieza is. It’s a powerful scene in which Vegeta feels true terror for the first time in his life.

▼ … and the back. Even the hole in the fighting suit made by Krillin when he purposefully blasted Vegetal to near death so that Vegeta could take advantage of the Saiyan ability to recover from grave injuries stronger than before, is accurately recreated.

The trembling Vegeta is the newest in Bandai’s NEXT VENDOR’S INNOVATION line, which was first released in 2014 and includes previous figures of characters such as Gon and Hisoka from HUNTER×HUNTER and Brock (Takeshi) from Pokémon Red & Blue, in addition to the dead Yamcha figure we’ve already introduced. The series has been well-received so far, and this latest Vegeta figure looks to be no exception, as Japanese internet users have already responded in a huge way, many saying that they love this hilariously silly yet expertly designed idea for a figure — so much so that at one point, it was one of the most trending topics on Japanese Twitter.

Unbelievably enough, eight months of work went into trying to get the figure to vibrate in just the right way to simulate an actual body shaking as accurately as possible. Now, that’s a lot of effort to put into one trembling figure.

The Bandai staff responsible for creating the shaking Vegeta says he had a hard time coming up with a product to match the impact of the previous Yamcha figure but eventually came to the conclusion that getting the figure to vibrate actually just might do the trick. Apparently, when the people working with him first heard the idea, they all asked, “Does it really need to vibrate?” but hey, we think it’s great!

The HG (high-grade) vibrating Vegeta figure, which will be priced at 4,949 yen (US$43.53),  is currently available for pre-order on the Premium Bandai website until 11pm on March 23 and is scheduled for shipment in June.

We certainly hope the folks at Bandai will continue to make us laugh with their zany yet amazingly real figures!

This vibrant, life-sized figure of alien Lum from popular ’80s manga and anime series Urusei Yatsura stands 164 centimetres (5’3″) tall and lovingly recreates in 3D her iconic turquoise green hair, tiger-striped bikini, and shapely body. Hong Kong toymaker BigBoysToys is continuing its figure line-up up with CAPCOM Japan to release a series of Street Fighter character figures. The third figure is a super-deformed Chun-Li performing her signature move, Hyakuretsukyaku.

The figure not only poses like her video game counterpart, but she also shouts while the blue energy blast lights up. The figure’s stand mimics Chun Li’s stage from Street Fighter II with her remaining health pictured up top.

The figure is available for pre-order through Tokyo Otaku Mode, Crunchyroll, and PlayAsia for US$89.99-US$99.99. It is expected to ship April.

BigBoysToys released Ryu last April and Ken in November.

You can now adorn your cup with Japan’s (and possibly the world’s) favorite middle-aged teddy bear!

Ted, the talking teddy bear whose movies have been a huge hit in Japan, may not have scored any points with Santa this year for being good, but he’s sure looking cute as PUTITO figures designed to sit perched on the edge of your cup. Yes, we’ve seen rodents, Pokémon and even Star Wars characters turned into cup-clinging figures before, and now the naughty yet lovable teddy bear has joined them as well.

Five types of Ted PUTITO figures have recently become available through Japanese bookshop and novelty store chain Village Vanguard, priced at 500 yen (US$4.13) a piece. Here’s a closer look at the figures, each about 5-6 centimeters (approximately 2 inches) tall.

It looks like these cup clingers are the perfect item to capture Ted’s … well, let’s just say unconventional and care-free spirit, particularly the one where he’s enjoying a drink of his own while perched on your glass! And the fact that he looks adorable in all these forms is just an added bonus that should make the figures a hit at any party.

The Ted PUTITO figures are being sold at select Village Vanguard shops across Japan, and they also have a set of eight figures available for 4,000 yen ($33.04) on their online shop, but the online stock seems to be sold out at this time, even though it’s been only a few days since the item’s release.

You may not exactly be a role model, but the Japanese public sure seems to love you, Ted!

Do you love fantasy RPGs and Hatsune Miku? If so, then you’re definitely going to love this new figure of the vocaloid designed by the popular artist mebae!

There are plenty of anime and manga characters out there as well as a ton of vocaloids, but despite the competition Hatsune Miku remains a fan favorite. Whether it’s her awesome hair or the fact that she always seems to be glowing brilliant neon colors, we suspect that fans will never stop loving the ageless character.

But of all the cool versions of Hatsune Miku we’ve seen, this one might very well be the coolest, with the kind of flair you’d expect from the baddest of Final Fantasy bosses!

The 1:7 scale figure was designed by popular illustrator mebae, who works as an illustrator, manga artist, animator, and sometimes even an anime director. If this figure is any indication, he clearly has an eye for awesome designs! Between the pose, the slightly insane tutu, and Miku’s trademark hair, this figure is just begging to be turned into one awesome cosplay outfit!

The figure is planned to be about 225 millimeters (about 8.8 inches) tall and will be made of ABS and plastic. Pre-orders are open from now until December 9 and the final version is expected to be released in June next year. That wait is almost as long as Miku’s hair!

Of course, a figure this awesome won’t come cheap, and at 18,333 yen (roughly US$150) plus tax, the price tag might be enough to make even the most hardcore Miku fan stop and think before reaching for their wallet. But not for very long!

So if you think it’s worth the price (and we really can’t blame you if you do), you can pre-order the figure either through one of Good Smile Company’s partner shops or their website. If you can’t decide which way to go, it looks like they’re offering a poster with mebae’s illustration to everyone who orders online.

Now, we just need Square Enix to make Miku a character in their next game, and it would be perfect! Especially if she were the final boss…who would dare attack her?!

Since Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli fame announced his retirement in September 2013, many fans worldwide were left wondering what the prolific director – known to be a notoriously hard-worker – would be doing with all his free time. If you’re one of those people, listen up, because we’ve got some good news and bad news.

First, the bad news–one of Miyazaki’s first new projects post-retirement, a manga series titled Teppō Samurai (鉄砲侍/”Matchlock Samurai”), is currently stuck in indefinite limbo. But here’s the good news–a plastic figure modeled on the titular character has already been released, even without the manga being completed.

Teppō Samurai tells the story of matchlock gun-wielding cavalry warrior Hiruko Hachirota (蛭子八郎太) on the front lines of a battle between the Hojo andUesugi clans in theKanto area of 1560s feudal Japan. Miyazaki apparently began working on the story’s concept back in 2013, spending a year drafting and illustrating half of the first battle scene before halting its production for reasons that remain unclear. Teppō Samurai was originally scheduled to be serialized in the monthly Japanese magazine Model Graphix, but as a result of its indefinite status, it is currently unknown whether the manga will actually be completed, let alone released, in the near future.

Of course, no one could foresee the manga’s current state of postponement/cancellation. Back in the early stages of planning, plastic model kit producer Model Kasten had already been given the OK to create a figure modeled on Miyazaki’s own original design of the samurai protagonist Hiruko Hachirota. In fact, Miyazaki himself inspected a prototype of the figure, commenting that the chest area was “too thin and weak-looking.”

In fact, Model Kasten has since gone ahead and released the final version, describing it as a 1/35 scaled model which comes in the form of a plastic kit that the buyer must assemble and color by hand.

While the figure is now being advertised through Model Kasten’s website for 1,850 yen (US $15.42), event goers to the Shizuoka Hobby Show held on May 16 and 17 in Shizuoka Prefecture got a chance to get their hands on the product ahead of time.

Looks like the rest of us will just have to wait a little bit longer to get our own copies of the samurai, which is the next-best thing to a release of the Teppō Samurai manga itself!

Tetsuya Nomura is the mastermind behind this upcoming Batman figure, the likes of which you’ve never seen before. The 44-year-old video game artist/designer/director of Square Enix fame (he’s a veteran of both the Final Fantasy series and Kingdom Hearts) personally designed this version of the Dark Knight, and if you’re a fan of both his work and DC Comics, you’d better ready your wallet now!

Even by Batman standards, this new figure is a relatively dark interpretation of everybody’s favorite brooding superhero. One look at its design and Nomura’s stylistic flourishes are evident in every little detail, from the incredibly intricate bladed arm gauntlets to the flowing, jagged cape. A pair of mobile arms sprouting from the figure’s back, which can be “deactivated” at your pleasure, add a nice personal touch. This definitely seems like the Final Fantasy X Batman crossover that we’ve all been waiting for.

The glossy black coloration accented by a rich red does wonders to further stylize the Dark Knight. Just watch out for those claws!

At approximately 306 millimeters (12 inches) tall and weighing 670 grams (1.5 pounds), the figure has quite the threatening presence.

Nomura’s figure is currently available for pre-order on Amazon Japan’s site for 19,786 yen (US$166.01), which is also listed as being 26% (6,998 yen/$58.72) off the list price. The actual release date is slated for July 31. Whether you collect Batman or Final Fantasy figures, this product is sure to complement either collection!

Some of Japan’s most famous characters created by legendary manga-ka Fujiko F Fujio have been turned into robots by Bandai, which can then be combined to create an even more epicly-super-cool robot of retro awesomeness!

Fujiko Fujio was the name used collaboratively by manga artists Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko when they worked as a duo. Fujimoto also used the name Fujiko F Fujio when he worked alone (Abiko worked as Fujiko Fujio A). He passed away in 1996, and continues to be remembered as one of Japan’s best-loved and most influential manga artists. His most famous work is undoubtedly Doraemon, the tale of a time-traveling robotic cat that is still loved by Japanese of all ages today. The release of Bandai’s new toy celebrates 40 years of Bandai’s Chogokin or ‘Super Alloy’ brand, first launched in 1974, as well as 80 years since Fujimoto’s birth.

The line is called ‘Chogattai! SF Robot Fujiko F Fujio Characters’, and includes the following six robot-icized character:

1. Doraemon, Fujimoto’s most famous character, from Doraemon

It also includes three items: Fujimoto’s trademark beret hat and kabura pen, and the ‘secret gadget’ time machine that appears in Doraemon.

The six robot figures and three items can be combined to transform into a 22.5cm (8.9 inch) super-robot!

Another treat for the fans is that in this form, the design of the head part with the helmet closed is reminiscent of the giant robot Zanda Cross that appeared in the 1986 movie Doraemon: Nobita and the Steel Troops. Additionally, the official site is showing a special promotional video that features a new animation made especially to advertise the toy where many of Fujimoto’s characters pop up. It’s a must-see for fans!

The toy is due to go on sale on November 29 at a price of 14,904 yen (US$146). You can pre-order it now online or in stores. It’ll also be on display in the Bandai booth at the 2014 Tokyo Toy Show to be held at Tokyo Big Site on June 14 and 15, so you can go check it out even if you don’t have the bucks to buy your own.

In the US, some of the most common roadside attractions are the “World’s Largest Whatever”: World’s Largest Ketchup Bottle, World’s Largest Ball of Rubber Bands, World’s Largest Rocking Chair, World’s Largest Golf Ball, World’s Largest Ball of Twine, all real and all in the United States.

But why go big, when you can go small…like, really small. How about a 1.5cm (0.6 inch) tall Kamen Rider figure? What’s more, you’ll be able to get one of them in Japan really soon!

Japan has an image of being the land of electronics and robotics, so it’s no surprise that Japanese people have been taking things and making them as small as possible. We’ve seen this in tiny electronics, tiny bars (some only seat three people!), tiny houses, and even tiny sushi!

Dubbed “Micro Kamen Rider Series volume 1”, Banpresto is releasing these tiny figures fully colored and with an impressive amount of detail. Standing at 1.5 cm (0.6 in) tall, they are scaled to 1/140th the size of Kamen Rider. And the fun doesn’t stop there! They will make up to four installments of this fantastic series with the final volume being released in July. While Banpresto has started with Kamen Rider figures, they plan on releasing One Piece figures next. Other characters are also planned but no details have been released yet.

If you want to get your too-large hands on these micro sized figures, you better be good at UFO catcher games. It seems like Banpresto will be offering the figures at amusement spots all around Japan from the end of June!

But before June, the figures will have an introductory sale at a few spots around the country from May 17. If you can’t catch these minis then, look for them again in June!

Akihabara: Outdoor Akihabara Shop
Nagoya: Nagoya Rega- Land Sasashima

If you find yourself near any of those locations on the 17th, take a look inside to see if you can catch a glimpse of the micro Kamen Rider. Size isn’t everything, especially if the bad guys are busy taking in a Sunday afternoon ball game.

Pulchra displayed a prototype 1/7-scale Mikasa figure from Attack on Titan, which shows her in mid-leap over part of a Titan’s hand.

Meanwhile, Sentinel has unveiled a 1/8-scale (8-inch) figure of Eren before a pivotal scene sculpted by Yuuki Ishiyama. It has a movable neck and left arm and can be removed from its mount to enable a wide range of poses.

It also comes in this version, showing Eren dejected at the prospect of cleaning.

The standard Eren figure is priced at ¥8,856 ($87) while the cleaning version costs ¥9,936 ($97). It will be released in September; pre-orders sold out within an hour.
