Finally, the 190-centimeter stuffed animal salmon slice that Sanrio fans have been waiting for!
Sanrio owes its success not just to the adorable designs of its characters, but to the huge selection of little knickknacks it offers. No matter which character is your favorite, you can get a keychain, notebook, or smartphone case with their likeness, ready to give you a little smile every time you look at its compact cuteness.
But what if you’re an especially big Sanrio fan who’s craving an especially big Sanrio item? Then this is for you.

Actually, these plushies aren’t just big, they’re “super big of your dreams”-sized. Sanrio is looking to make a whole line of Soft and Fluffy Super Big Stuffed Animal Cushions of Your Dreams, and leading off are Kuromi, mischievous self-proclaimed rival to My Melody, and Kirimi-chan, Sanrio’s sentient salmon filet who wants nothing more than to be devoured someday.

Kuromi stands 180 centimeters (70.9 inches) tall, making her taller than the average Japanese adult. Kirimi-chan, meanwhile has a more modest height of 118 centimeters, but also a massive 190-centimeter width.

These plushies are so big that you might have trouble holding them in your arms for extended periods of time. If so, Sanrio recommends lying or sitting down to cuddle them.

Or, for maximum relaxation, you can lie down on top of the Soft and Fluffy Super Big Stuffed Animal Cushions of Your Dreams. While their top/front facing surfaces are pillowy soft, they have a urethane base on the bottom/back, making them essentially Sanrio character-shaped mattresses.

Being on top of them does make them harder to wrap your arms around, but the odds of these jumbo versions of Kuromi and Kirimi-chan being any fan’s sole plushie of the character are slim to none, so all you have to do is grab one of your non-crazy-size stuffed animals if you need something to squeeze.

Eventually Sanrio plans to add other characters to the line, including, of course, Hello Kitty. For now, though, it’s Kuromi and Kirimi-chan who’re available, but you can’t just stroll into a Sanrio store and grab one off the shelf. Instead, they’re being offered through crowdfunding site Makuake, at a price of 50,000 yen (US$385), seeing as how they’re effectively pieces of furniture.

Kuromi’s crowdfunding page can be found here, and Kirimi-chan’s here. Each campaign has 60 days to go, with shipping scheduled for November, so you’ve got plenty of time to figure out how you’re going to rearrange your home’s interior to fit them in.

Japan’s annual Cat Day (Neko no Hi) on February 22 provides a fun excuse to celebrate a variety of furry feline friends (not that they ever need a special reason to be worshipped, though!) From cute doughnuts to cat makeovers, our team also enjoys getting in on the fun–and it seems like other companies do as well.
This year on February 22, various Sanrio Twitter accounts were taken over by feline transformations of some beloved characters themselves. Enjoy the following collection of those pawsitively adorable posts.
Gudetama better watch out before it’s devoured on top of a bowl of nekomanma, or cat rice! The cat-eared eggshell hat is a nice touch.

Flour dough sprites Cogimyun and Cogimyon are looking cute in their kitty onesies complete with tails. And we thought it wasn’t possible for them to get any fluffier looking…

Despite being a golden retriever, Pompompurin has no qualms about dressing up like a cat. He and his pals are looking sharp with their celebratory cat hats and neon lights.

White bunny My Melody sends everyone wishes for happiness and some meows to boot. She’s pretty good at making the beckoning cat pose, too.

This one’s a little unexpected–Kirimi-chan, a piece of sliced salmon, has traded in her usually simple smile for a slightly more realistic cat face. I guess we have metaphysics to thank for that transformation…?

Finally, you didn’t think the biggest star of Sanrio would miss out on the fun, did you? The Gundam and Hello Kitty Project duo proudly showed off their kitty outfits–and just for the record, it’s not weird at all since Hello Kitty isn’t actually a cat.

Hopefully these accounts have given you some ideas about how to celebrate your very own Cat Day next year. Before that though, we have Dog Day on November 1 [in Japan] to celebrate–and we’ll be keeping an eye on our Sanrio friends to see if they do something similar.

Japan never fails to amaze when it comes to transforming the quotidian into cute. I mean, this is the country that turns cucumber-stealing, human-throttling swamp monsters into adorable toys for kids. The country’s latest go at cute-ification comes from Hello Kitty producing toy company Sanrio: Kirimi-chan, a walking, talking salmon fillet, who is set to debut next month with a line of kawaii craziness.
Last year, Sanrio created 20 characters based on popular food items in Japan and held an online election to see which food the public most wanted to cuddle. Kirimi-chan came out on top, so a line of goods featuring the cute cutlet will go on sale at Sanrio shops around the country beginning on February 13.
There will be 16 items in total, including a mini cushion (2,940 yen/about US$28), a dye-cut change purse (1,470 yen/$14), and plush charms (1,050 yen/$10).
▼Proclaim your love of seafood to the world!

Lest you think this is just slapping a smiley face on a piece of fish, Kirimi-chan has a whole back story on the Sanrio website. According to them, she is a pop star in the world of sliced meat and fish, and she came into being the moment she was sliced off a salmon, aware of only the desire to be eaten and considered delicious. Her best friend is a slice of kamaboko fish paste, but she also hangs out with Tai-kun and Saba-kun, self-aware sea bream and mackerel fillets respectively.
Kirimi-chan is already active on Twitter, making friends ahead of her big debut. With masochistic tweets like, “Please eat me, I’m delicious,” she’s sure to attract a following among a certain crowd, but it remains to be seen whether she can net a wider audience.

Sanrio has come up with some pretty adorable characters over the years. From Batsu-Maru to their most famous little mascot, Hello Kitty, the kawaii just won’t stop. However, the company’s newest character, Kirimi-chan, is questionably cute and definitely bizarre. She is the lead character for Sanrio’s new line of food mascots, inspiring one netizen to easily create a real-life version.
With just a slice of grilled salmon, a piece of ham, and a sharpie, Kirimi-chan appears on a plate:

She’s actually cuter in real life with her little pink body and oversized head. Too bad she’s now inedible thanks to the addition of a painted on smile. If only they made Kirimi-chan with two little seaweed circles and a seaweed swoosh for her mouth. She’d be fully edible and cute enough to coax even the pickiest eater to dive right in.
