A few dollars and a handful of materials are all you need to make your very own lightsaber—and this crafty father shows us how!

What do you do when your son asks for a lightsaber and you’re not quite ready to shell out the money for an expensive toy that will most likely get broken after its first battle? One clever Japanese dad headed to the 100 yen shop, bought a couple of items, and made his very own!

All he needed to buy? A transparent manual siphon pump and a mini LED flashlight. You’ll also need some color film and of course batteries for the flashlight.

First, disassemble the siphon pump. All you’ll need are the suction tube and the cap from the hand pump.

Then use a pair of wire cutters to remove the bits off the suction tube that you don’t need.

Take a box cutter to carefully cut the tapered end off of the suction tube, then close it off with the cap.

Next, take some colored film (the video doesn’t specify what sort of film, but we would suggest colored cellophane, or even transparent colored counting chips if they’re the right size) and secure it to the end of the flashlight. Choose any color you like.

Finally, secure the flashlight into the handle end of the suction tube, and you’re ready to defend the galaxy!

Or if you’re not quite ready to take on the bad guys, this would still make a cool alternative to a normal flashlight.

From the action scenes to the dialogue and spirit of the characters, this new short documentary hosted by Mark Hamill confirms the heavy influence of kendo on the entire Star Wars franchise.

We’ve heard a lot about Star Wars director George Lucas’ admiration for Akira Kurosawa movies and the samurai inspiration that spawned Darth Vader’s costume and helmet for the series. Now there’s a new short documentary that shifts the focus towards the Japanese martial art of kendo, revealing some surprising facts about how much the sport influenced the many lightsaber duels throughout the series.

▼ Called “Evolution of the Lightsaber Duel”, the 2015 documentary is hosted by Mark Hamill, AKA Luke Skywalker, who once lived in Japan, attending Yokohama High School in the late 60s.

The documentary begins with two eye-opening statements that really drive home the importance of kendo in the world of Star Wars.

“It’s honour, it’s balance, it’s justice; kendo is everything that Jedi are”.

And: “There’s a saying in kendo: ‘One thousand days training for one moment of reckoning'”.

The first part of the documentary traces the origins of kendo, which came about at the end of the civil war period, at the turn of the 17th Century, when samurai warriors no longer needed to fight but were worried about losing their combat skills.

So the warriors began training with bamboo swords called shinai, giving birth to the martial art of kendo. The shinai bears a striking resemblance to the lightsaber, the weapon of the Jedi Knight.

The second part of the documentary journeys to the 2015 World Kendo Championships in Japan and takes a look at the modern-day sport and its development in the more recent Star Wars instalments.

While the first Star Wars movie borrowed a lot from both western and samurai sword-fighting styles, later movies called for more exciting, fast-paced lightsaber duels. Stunt coordinators decided to concentrate primarily on using the kendo fighting style, training actors in the sport as the speed and agility inherent in kendo allowed for more hits and more action.

While some kendo moves were embellished for fights on film, there are other moments when actors employ classic kendo stances and strikes.

The final half of the story, including some comments from Star Wars:The Force Awakens actor, John Boyega, can be seen below.

Japanese ice skater Yuzuru Hanyu is famous for record-breaking performances—but none are as awesome as this video of the athlete with a lightsaber!

Japanese ice skater Yuzuru Hanyu is as famous for breaking world records as he is for wooing Japan’s cats, but his next role should be in a Star Wars film, if this edited video is any indication.

Twitter user @nobu_llllllllll decided to try giving Yuzuru a lightsaber in one of his record-breaking performances, and we think you’ll agree that it’s just the best ice skating video we’ve seen this week!

J.J. Abrams clearly should have approached the young athlete for a guest-starring role in the new Star Wars film—his lightsaber skills are amazing. We’d be perfectly happy to see Yuzuru fighting a Sith lord on ice.

Maybe someone should think about adding a new event to the Olympics: Ice sword skating would definitely draw a huge number of viewers!

With just over a month until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters, Star Wars fever has taken the world by storm, and Korea is no exception! K-pop group EXO has recorded a tie-in single, named “Lightsaber”,  for the Korean release of the film, and a music video for the song was released on YouTube earlier this week. As you may expect, it quickly went viral, reaching almost two million views in the last few days.

We’ve seen anticipation for the new Star Wars film explode in Japan over the last year in the form of rice paddy art, home furnishings, and edible characters. So, it makes sense that in Korea, the most anticipated movie release of the year would team up with the fastest selling K-pop group ever, making this the second collaborative effort between Disney and music juggernaut SM Entertainment.

The video features Baekhyun, Sehun, and Kai from the group, in an alternate reality where open- and concealed-carry lightsabers are apparently real things.

▼ Also, lightsaber accessories are the next big trend.

▼Either this pool hall is secret Jedi hangout or discrimination is nasty in this reality.

We’re not sure how knocking over a bunch of junk food off a supermarket shelf mentally prepares you for battle, but maybe it’s just his special way of honing in on the Force.

After watching the video and finding it pretty lacking in lightsaber action, one might wonder if EXO is actually promoting Star Wars! According to those in the know, though, this is only the short version and fans can look forward to the group opening up a can of Jedi whoop-ass in the soon-to-be-released full version.

Hopefully the final video will look as cool as this previous EXO “Lightsaber” trailer released a few years back, but with effects like this epic kendo fight instead of laser hands.
