“Welcome aboard hotel room 101, this is your flight captain speaking.”
Whether you are in Japan for a long stopover or just resting a few hours before a connecting flight, accommodations like no-fuss capsule hotels offer a brief haven to recharge and wash way travel fatigue. But if comfort is at the top of your priority list, then nothing beats a soft bed in an airport hotel.
Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu’s proximity to the runways means relaxation at affordable prices within easy reach. We have stayed there previously, but some of their rooms have since received an awesome upgrade.
▼ Transforming an ordinary room like this…

▼ …into this spacious and amazing setup.

To be precise, flight simulators have been installed to provide customers with entertainment in select rooms, with the two-seat cockpits so huge that their displays and equipment take up an entire wall.
These flight simulator rooms cost 25,300 yen (US$234) per night and are meant to accommodate two people. From communication equipment and engine instruments, to the altitude, heading and flight speed indicators, the cockpits provide a rather accurate representation of what it feels like to fly an airplane.
▼ The closest anybody can get to being in a cockpit
without first being a licensed pilot.

The simulation experience starts from taking off of Haneda Airport’s runway and into the air, circling around for a fantastic view of the sprawling complex before performing a smooth landing and docking at one of the airport gates. And if the rest of the room is anything like the one we’ve seen before, then the facilities are just as sweet.
▼ Like the sparkling clean bathroom…

▼ …and maybe even a crystal-clear view of the impressive runway itself.

What’s more, a one-night stay in a flight simulation room costs roughly the same as other non-equipped ones in Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu, so those cockpits are essentially free entertainment for those already planning to stay there. Reservations can be done online here.
So if you happen to be around Haneda Airport for a considerable amount of time, be it waiting for a connecting flight or sampling delicious cuisine in top restaurants, why not treat yourself to a unique flying experience in the comfort of a cozy hotel room?

Fly at home with a real-life steering yoke…with one small catch https://soranews24.com/2015/09/06/calling-all-plane-otaku-fly-at-home-with-a-real-life-steering-yoke-with-one-small-catch/ https://soranews24.com/2015/09/06/calling-all-plane-otaku-fly-at-home-with-a-real-life-steering-yoke-with-one-small-catch/#comments Sun, 06 Sep 2015 13:00:47 +0000 http://en.rocketnews24.com/?p=263486
ANA (All Nippon Airways) knows how to treat their fans. They’ve got Pokémon and Star Wars-themed planes, and now they’re doing something even more special: raffling off the actual steering yokes of a retired Boeing 767.
Do you want to have the ultimate flight simulator controller? Or finally complete your ANA-themed bedroom? Read on to find out how you can get your hands on a piece of Japanese flight history! But be warned: There is a slight catch.
ANA is raffling off two refurbished yokes which were once used by pilots and co-pilots of a retired Boeing 767. The plane that they’re from, JA8288, was in use from 1989 to 2014, serving ANA for 25 years. Each yoke comes with a plaque with the airplane code, serial number, and the number of flights/hours flown carved onto them. It even includes a gift box and a memorial photo of JA8288, providing that authentic ANA feel.
So, how exactly do you get one? First, before anything, you either need to be a member of ANA’s mileage club, or an A-style member. Once you’ve got that out of the way, you go to A-style’s website and pick which yoke you’d like to enter the raffle for: either the pilot’s or the co-pilot’s. After that you just wait until October and hope you’re the lucky one who gets a call from ANA saying you’ve won!
Then, all you’ll need to do is…pay 767,000 yen (US$6,448)?!
Oh yes, this is not a raffle to win one of the yokes; this is a raffle to win a chance to buy one of the yokes. What, aren’t you excited you won? Now, pay up! You’ll get 7,670 bonus miles, so it’s not even a big deal!

As ridiculous as it may sound to have to win a raffle just for the chance to buy something, it’s not too uncommon in Japan. And for the people entering the raffle, they’d probably be happy to pay any price to own the prize. Just think of all the otaku-cred you’d get when flaunting a new, authentic steering yoke at the next ANA convention!
And for everyone who doesn’t with the raffle, at least they can still put their money to good use buying some slightly less expensive Ghost in the Shell ukiyo-e prints!

In Asian countries, working on an airplane is considered a highly skilled occupation. Aside from the usual flying skills and regulations, both pilots and staff also need knowledge of another language (particularly English). On top of that, physical limitations like height and vision make for a rather shallow pool of candidates.
In China, a country often given a bad rap for lax regulations, the restrictions are even tighter as having smelly underarms is grounds for expulsion from becoming a pilot.
The photos above and below are of a screening session held in Shanxi province for hopeful pilots looking to join Hainan Airlines or China Eastern Airlines. Since the standards are set by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the screening for each airline can be done together.
During this particular November 3 session, applicants had to be tested on their vision, English, and body odor (BO). The CAACBO exam is rather low-tech. The examinee simply raises their arms while the licensed examiner wafts the air around it towards them. They may also stick their nose right in there if need be.
For the 90 applicants, failure to pass the CAACBO test is just as severe as not knowing a lick of English or being blind as a bat. You do not pass go, you do not collect a commercial pilot’s license.
The benefits of having non-smelly pilots are obvious, but perhaps this test is also a roundabout way to test nerves and keeping cool under pressure. The other exams can be intense, so if you walk out of them smelling like a rose, you’re the right man for the job.
