Shibuya’s Mewtwo escapes and has been “spotted” on the other side of the Pacific.
There are Pokémon Center superstores in various parts of Japan, but each one has its own special representative Pokémon, prominently displayed at the entrance. So since the opening of the Shibuya Pokémon Center in downtown Tokyo in 2019, the first Pocket Monster that visitors see is Mewtwo.

With Mewtwo having a Pokédex-listed height of 2 meters (6 feet, 7 inches), the one at the Shibuya Pokémon Center is essentially life-size, and it radiates an intimidating aura, boosted by the subtle movements it makes that imply that it’s breathing. Of course, the infamously malevolent Pokémon isn’t too scary. After all, it’s contained inside that secured tube…right?

Not anymore! Recent visitors to the Shibuya Pokémon Center have quickly noticed that Mewtwo is gone, and even the official Japanese Pokémon promotional account has put out a statement of sorts.
▼ “Whoa, the Mewtwo that was at Pokémon Center Shibuya has disappeared…why?”
え、ポケセンシブヤ行ったらミュウツーいなくなってたんだけど なんで? pic.twitter.com/Id7l87SU0h
— 【公式】ポケモン情報局 (@poke_times) July 9, 2026
For those without a background in Pokémon biology, it should be pointed out that Mewtwo’s powers do not include invisibility, which rules out the possibility that it’s still in the tube, but hiding. What is in Mewtwo’s list of abilities, though, is teleportation, which would explain how it got out of the tube without shattering the glass or anyone otherwise opening the containment unit.
The official Japanese Pokémon GO Twitter account has also posted that Mewtwo has disappeared from the in-game image for the Pokémon Center Shibuya’s PokéStop.
▼ “Well look at that…Mewtwo has disappeared from the PokéStop too…”

Thankfully, the earnest tone from official channels suggests that Mewtwo’s disappearance isn’t the result of theft, vandalism, or damage, and is, in an ironically reassuring way, simply part of some nefarious ambition that Mewtwo has set out to fulfill…a theory that’s lent further credibility by the Pokémon GO account’s follow-up that “There has been a series of eye-witness reports spotting Mewtwo in New York! Just what is going on?”
「ミュウツー」の目撃情報がニューヨークで相次いでいます!
一体これは!?

— Pokémon GO Japan (@PokemonGOAppJP) July 10, 2026
A seemingly significant aspect of all this is that the disappearance of the Pokémon Center Shibuya Mewtwo isn’t part of any larger “Where did Mewtwo go?” kind of promotion in Japan. It’s only the Pokémon Center’s Mewtwo that’s missing, and so the follow-up post doesn’t just suggest a connection between Mewtwo and New York, but also between New York and the Pokémon Center.
Though the Pokémon franchise is immensely popular in the United States, there’s currently no physical Pokémon Center store in the country. At the same time, the Shibuya Pokémon Center is massively popular with foreign tourists in Tokyo, so much so that they often outnumber Japanese shoppers within the store. The Pokémon Company has no doubt taken notice of this, and so could Mewtwo have temporarily disappeared from Shibuya in preparation for the impending announcement of the opening of America’s first Pokémon Center in New York? We’ll have to wait and see, but with Studio Ghibli specialty store Donguri Kyowakoku finally advancing into the American market, plus the Pokémon franchise currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, the timing feels right.

Mr. Sato takes us on a tour of Cyberspace Shibuya inside Parco ahead of its grand opening.
There’s been a lot of new buildings opening up in Shibuya ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but one of the most hotly anticipated of them all has to be the new Parco complex, which, after three years of reconstruction, is scheduled to open its doors to the public on 22 November.
▼ The old Parco was in such need of a makeover it even lost the “R” on its facade just before it closed in 2016.

What sets this new building apart from all the others is the fact that it will be home to not just a number of fantastic new stores, but also the first Nintendo store in all of Japan, the first Capcom store in all of Japan, and a new Pokémon Center megastore featuring Mewtwo as its representative Pokémon.
Luckily for us, our Japanese-language reporter Mr Sato scored a pre-opening invitation to view the shopping complex, which meant he got to be one of the first in the country to take a peek at the new stores before their grand opening.

When Mr Sato arrived at Parco, he went straight to the sixth floor, which has been given the name “Cyberspace Shibuya“. According to Parco’s official website, this floor is a “Digital x Subculture Zone gathering top content from games, characters, manga and esports”.
This is where you’ll find the “Jump Shop“, which is Weekly Shonen Jump’s official store. This is the fourth Jump Shop in Japan, and at this location you’ll be able to strike a pose with Dragon Ball’s Goku and Luffy from One Piece.

The next thing likely to catch your eye on this floor is Capcom Store Tokyo, the first of its kind in all of Japan, which is stocked with official merchandise from hits like Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, and Resident Evil.

▼ At the front of the store you’ll find Ryu from Street Fighter throwing a Hadouken.

Another never-before-seen store is Nintendo Tokyo, which is filled with a slew of exclusive character merchandise. This looks set to become one of the most popular shops in the entire building, and when Mr Sato was there it was so crowded they had restricted access so sadly, he was unable to enter.

One other store to keep an eye out for is the Touken Ranbu official store, which looked beautiful with its wood interiors.

At the centre of it all is Pokémon Centre Shibuya, which is one of the best looking Pokémon Centres in all of Japan, particularly with its special representative Mewtwo sitting in a research tube at the entrance.

▼ The new store incorporates the colour of Mewtwo in its lighting scheme as well.

Every Pokémon Centre has its own exclusive Pikachu, and one of the two types you’ll find here at Shibuya comes covered in graffiti, designed by Japanese graffiti muralist Number-D.

As a holy land for fans of the franchise, lines to pay for exclusive merch here look set to remain long every day of the year.

Once you’ve enjoyed everything that Cyberspace Shibuya has to offer, you won’t want to miss out on visiting the “Rooftop Park” on the tenth floor of the 19-storey building, which has a beautiful garden space with a gorgeous view of the surrounding area.

From the rooftop, you’ll be able to see across to nearby Shibuya Scramble Square, which towers over the neighbouring buildings.

It’s not long to go now until the public get to enjoy everything the building has to offer for themselves, so button up your Pokémon Shirt or throw on your Nintendo Uniqlo T-shirt, and head out to Parco Shibuya on 22 November. See you there!

New shop within walking distance from Scramble Intersection also has giant Mewtwo in research tube greeting guests.
Game fans already have one compelling reason to head to Tokyo’s Shibuya district this weekend, since February 22 is the grand opening of Nintendo Tokyo, the company’s first dedicated store in all of Japan. But there’s another must-visit location opening up in the same building: a brand-new Pokémon Center megastore!

While this isn’t Tokyo’s first Pokémon Center, each location has a unique interior style, representative Pokémon, and exclusive merch. In the case of Pokémon Center Shibuya, it’s Mew and Mewtwo who make up the welcoming committee, with the ominous Mewtwo encased in a research tube inside the store.

But of course, Pikachu is the eternal face of the franchise, and Pokémon Center Shibuya will also be selling graffiti artist Pikachu plushies, a nod to the neighborhood’s association with edgy, urban fashion trends.

Handling design work is Japanese graffiti muralist Number-D, who’s applied the aesthetic to the Pocket Monster himself too for a pair of plushies that are exclusive to the Shibuya shop, as is a dual-sided Pokémon skateboard deck.

On the apparel and accessories front, there’s a line of T-shirts, hoodies, and a messenger bag, although the artwork is a little too stylized to determine the Pokémon influences in these sneak-peak photos.

Pokémon Center Shibuya is also the only place to get the Swarovski Crystal Crystal Stone line of smartphone cases and key chains, which show off Pikachu, Mew, and Mewtwo in sparkling style.

As a special incentive to come on opening day, visitors on the 22nd will receive a limited-edition Shibuya Pikachu card for the Pokémon collectible card game (while supplies last)…

…and since it’s pretty easy to run up a large tally with all the cool stuff for sale at Pokémon Centers, spending more than 6,000 yen (US$56) gets you a graffiti art Mew sticker (also while supplies last).

Pokémon Center Shibuya opens at 10 a.m. on November 22 on the sixth floor of the newly rebuilt Shibuya Parco shopping complex.
