Score a real gem in this high-class crane game.
A unique UFO catcher in Saitama where you have the chance of winning real gemstones has caught people’s eyes after it was featured on Japan’s Monday Late Show (Getsuyou kara yo fukashi) on March 21.
The game center it is located within, Everyday, is already famous for having a whopping 309 “UFO catcher” crane games, has made frequent appearances on Japanese TV, and has also been visited by Japanese YouTube superstar Hikakin. With so many units to fill with prizes, it’s no wonder they’ve expanded beyond the usual scope of stuffed toys and plastic figurines.
The reporters for the show went to check out the center’s current biggest earner, a UFO catcher which offers real gemstones, including rubies and diamonds – if you can grab them, that is. These two cute ladies from YouTube channel BonBonTV also went along and tried their hand at the famed crane game, and you can see for yourself what it’s all about in the video below.
So the big question is: how hard is it to win one of these precious stones?
As you can see in the video above, the gems are buried in a tray of a pink sand-like substance, and are stowed safely inside little boxes with plastic tags by which the hook can catch them. When the Monday Late Show presenters went to check it out for themselves, they were armed with 5,000 yen (US$44), with one try on the machine costing 100 yen (around 90 cents). After 500 tries, they were able to scoop up a grand total of… six gems. Sure, that’s not so many, but they then took the stones to a gem expert who verified and valued them at a whopping 46,000 yen (US$405)!! This would imply that, given extreme patience and skill, you could potentially turn playing this particular crane game into a full-time job?!

The YouTubers here also had suspiciously good luck, winning a blue sapphire apparently on their first try. However, as anyone who has ever tried a UFO catcher knows, this is highly unusual. I’m not immune to the “just one more go” phenomenon myself, and am certainly guilty of frittering away a ridiculous amount because I’ll definitely get the item I’m aiming for on the next try… Probably… Maybe. Those 100-yen coins add up quickly! The moral being, you might want to take this supposed evidence of easy wins with a pinch of salt.

That being said, it’s potentially worth wasting a few thousand yen on this machine if you end up hitting it big with an elusive diamond or a ruby. Just make sure you set yourself a hard spending limit beforehand!
If you’re in the Saitama area, go ahead and check out UFO Everyday at the location below. They provide an English-language website, and at the center they have “Crane Game Advisors” certified by the Japan Crane Game Association on standby to help you out with your technique!
With all those crane games to choose from, there’s bound to be something that takes your fancy, and who knows – you might even win something!

Beginning on Friday, May 22, 7-Eleven stores across Japan will finally team up with the wildly popular Attack on Titan franchise to bring you a special lottery with all sorts of winnable prizes! Be sure to check out the details as well as an amusing new promotional video after the jump.
■ The “7-Eleven x Attack on Titan Seven Eleven Fair” begins!
The new campaign will begin on Friday, May 22. Buy at least 700 yen (US $5.85) worth of goods at any 7-Eleven store throughout Japan and you’ll be eligible to draw a ticket at the register with the possibility of winning an Attack on Titan-themed prize. In addition, a special web commercial advertising the upcoming fair is a must-see for any fan of the series!
■ Even the Colossal Titan wants in on the fun!
The web video shows the Colossal Titan plodding towards a 7-Eleven store, apparently after a brief shopping trip to his local convenience store. He mutters to himself, “I bought milk, pasta, and salad…surely this is enough to bridge the 700 yen wall!”
■ What revelation does Eren have…?
Just as the titan nears the wall, Eren comes into view. He replies somewhat hesitantly, “It comes to 699 yen.” Aww, poor Colossal Titan–you were so close!
The web commercial will be available to view until Tuesday, May 26.
▼ The Attack on Titan collaboration, coming to a 7-Eleven near you (minus the Colossal Titan)!

■ Prizes, prizes, and more prizes
If you’re familiar with previous 7-Eleven fairs, you’ll know that the different prizes you can win in each lottery drawing are arranged in basic order of coolness, from trivial trinkets to some grand prizes that only a few people manage to get their hands on. Check out the official campaign site here (in Japanese only, sorry) for a look at some of the prizes, and keep your eye on the official Twitter updates using the link below:

“Oh shoot, I’m out of dish soap, let’s go to the game center.” If this sentence seems incongruous, you clearly have not spent enough time in Japanese game centers. Sure game centers have good old fashion arcade games, air hockey and photo booths, but a lot of the space is taken up by UFO catchers (adorably pronounced, oo-fo in Japan), aka claw/crane games.
Usually, UFO catchers are filled with cute toys or cool figurines, but sometimes things get a little too practical. Other times, the prizes are just a bit… off. Twitter users across Japan have shared their strange finds with us before, but they just keep coming and they keep getting weirder.

Beginning on December 20, residents of Japan can participate in a special Pokémon-themed lottery campaign at participating stores throughout the country. Although the event is officially targeting young adult women, we don’t see how anyone could resist the cute goods that are just waiting to be snatched up!
What was that famous saying again? Oh yeah–“Gotta catch ’em all!”
Toy company Banpresto has announced its latest lottery campaign titled “Ichiban Kuji DreamStore PIKACHU & FRIENDS WITH BERRIES,” which features–you guessed it–Pikachu and some other Pokémon pals along with the ubiquitous berries found in the original line of Pokémon video games. The characters either take the form of lovable plushies or are stylized into cute patterns using soft pastel colors on a variety of adorable goodies, including hooded blankets, drinking glasses, towels, and even sachets.
An official list of participating merchants has not been released as of the time of this writing, but based on past experiences, these types of lottery campaigns are typically held at convenience stores, bookstores, hobby shops, game centers, video rental shops such as Tsutaya, and official Pokémon Centers throughout Japan. If you don’t see a sign advertising the event anywhere, ask someone working at the counter if the campaign is being held at that particular location.
▼Promotional art for the campaign

Perhaps the most exciting feature of the whole event is that one lottery ticket costs only 620 yen (US$5.31) and you’re guaranteed a prize every time! Based on the ticket you draw, you will win one of 17 total prizes spanning nine levels of rarity.
Let’s take a look now at all of the possible prizes arranged in ranked order:
“A” Prize: Pikachu hooded blanket (one version)

“B” Prize: Pikachu plushie (one version)

“C” Prize: Eevee plushie (one version)

“D” Prize: Dedenne plushie (one version)

“E” Prize: Original art cushion (one version)

“F” Prize: “Powder room” collection (two versions)

You can win either a mixed berry-scented hand cream or a Pikachu scrunchie.
“G” Prize: Fragrance sachet (two versions)

The Pikachu & Dedenne sachet is lavender-scented while the Eevee sachet is citrus-scented.
“H” Prize: Glass goods collection (three versions)

The glass jar and two tall glasses in this collection are all decorated with the berry motif.
“I” Prize: Colorful towel (five versions)

“Last man” Prize: Hooded blanket Eevee version (one version)

This prize will automatically be given to the last person who participates in the lottery at each separate location before all of the campaign stock is used up. If you’re desperate to rock this Eevee hooded blanket yourself, we suggest you keep a close eye on the shelves to gauge how many prizes are still left, and then buy up the last tickets once there are only a few items remaining.
Finally, all lottery participants will be eligible to compete in the “double chance” campaign using their original ticket stubs to win a special bonus prize–100 lucky winners will be selected to receive a limited B Prize: Pikachu plushie smiling version! Unfortunately, we can’t get a sneak peek at what it looks like because the site does not currently have an image for this item.
So there you have it! Good luck collecting all of the prizes next month!

Japanese UFO catchers give the best prizes – if you’re talented or lucky enough to grab them. (Personally, I think it’s all about luck because after many hours and probably hundreds of yen down the drain, I’m still not any better at winning.) But the euphoria of a win is usually quickly forgotten, and you’re left with one more piece of tat to cram into your room. So what about if UFO catchers actually dished out useful goodies? Wouldn’t that be a real win-win situation?!
People flock to game centres across Japan to try their hand at winning all manner of bright, fluffy, squishy, and adorable stuffed toys, models, and key chains. But what happens to all those cute little trinkets? They probably get left around the house to be tripped over in the morning rush out the door, or shoved into a dusty box under the bed along with your old tamagotchi and the letter from the weird boy down the road who thought he was a songwriter, and which you’re totally hanging on to just in case he does make it big.
▼ YOU REALLY REALLY NEED THESE.

Surely people were crying out for something actually useful to come out of these money-gobbling machines? Well, whether they were or not, a game centre somewhere in Akita Prefecture now has the answer.
This claw grabber machine is filled with products you’d actually use around the house such as plastic saran wrap and laundry detergent, or little bottles of tea that you can drink after working up a sweat banging on the glass and swearing your lungs out.
The only problem is that these useful items aren’t particularly appealing. It’s kind of like being at the supermarket, only instead of grabbing something off the shelf in a second you have to spend about 20 minutes and the equivalent amount of cash to actually get anything.
▼ You might actually need this, but somehow you don’t really want it now, do you?

Will this be taking off in game centers around the nation? Well according to Twitter users, these machines are a big hit with housewives! If they have a sneaky stop at the game centre on the way back from the supermarket no one at home will ever be the wiser for it. They’d just better make sure they don’t get hooked on the way there, or they might end up with no money left for groceries.
Now, dear readers, what’s the best or strangest thing you’ve ever won (or wished you’d won) from a UFO catcher?
