Japanese pre wrestler Kazuchika Okada puts his name, and body, behind this new release.

In Japan, the 29th day of every month is known as “Meat Day“, due to a pun that ties the Japanese word for meat (“niku“) with the Japanese words for two and nine (“ni” and “ku“). It’s the perfect day for fast food chains to release special burgers, and homegrown chain Mos Burger has done just that this month, giving us a burger that’s also a related pun in itself: the Kinniku Burger.

“Kinniku” means “muscle” or “muscles” in Japanese, and that’s exactly what this burger is all about, with Japanese pro wrestler Kazuchika Okada throwing his support behind the new release.

▼ Mos Burger hopes that Okada, a.k.a The Rainmaker, will shower them with customers, just as he’s showered with golden bills when he enters the stadium.

Okada isn’t just the face, and body, of the new burger, though — he’s also been involved in its creation, supervising the process to ensure that each burger contains 32 grams of protein, which is indispensable for strength training.

Our reporter P.K. Sanjun was keen to see whether this much protein would give him the strength he needed to get through another gruelling workday, so he headed out to Mos Burger to try it out.

Once there, he saw the burger contained the following ingredients:

“Soy patties based on vegetable protein derived from soybeans, chicken patties using domestic chicken breast meat, chicken nuggets as the main, green leaves, shredded cabbage, sliced cheese, aurora sauce, and meat sauce sandwiched between buns.”

And when he received it, he could see every ingredient at a glance because the burger was huge — towering in height like Okada himself, who’s 191 centimetres (6 foot 3 inches) tall.

▼ A heavyweight champion in the burger world.

P.K. felt as if this was the equivalent of two burgers, only with more emphasis on protein with the soy patty, chicken patty, and chicken nuggets. Though this was essentially protein food, it was the most delicious type he’d seen, as it dripped clumps of thick, meaty sauce while he held it in one hand.

Biting into it, P.K. raised a fist and pumped the air like a champion. Not only was this meal filled with muscle-building protein, it was absolutely delicious! The meat and soy components were moist and flavourful, with the cheese adding umami and the lettuce and shredded cabbage cutting through the grease for a refreshing lift.

The highlight, though, was the sauce, which was sweet and meaty, bringing everything together in a unified whole. Mos Burger clearly knows its stuff when it comes to creating flavoursome burgers, and with Okada on board to oversee the muscle-building aspect of the meal, this is a match made in protein heaven!

The burger retails for 850 yen (US$6.41) and will be available to purchase on the 29th of every month at Mos Burger outlets around the country.

The Japanese collegiate sports world was rocked recently by a dirty tackle executed by a football player from one of the nation’s top schools and the furious finger-pointing that ensued in its wake.

Luckily, we still have university baseball as a bastion of sportsmanship and honor, and that’s not all! In a recent University of Tokyo game, as second baseman Hirata “Hira-chan” Masaki appeared on camera, the caption below his name held a startling revelation about the player.

If you’re a completionist who likes to know everything – and I mean everything – there is to know about the game and its players, you’ll appreciate this little tidbit. Otherwise you’ll probably just be weirded out by it. It triggered the imaginations of other Twitter users, who posted what something like that might turn out like.

This is far from the first time TV graphics people have decided to have a little fun. During the last nationwide election, there was a spate of odd subtitles when winners were declared, including proclamations that Minister of Finance Taro Aso liked One Piece and PM Shinzo Abe loves Black Thunder chocolate bars.

It’s not always clear how accurate these factoids are. It’s certainly believable that Abe loves Black Thunder, because you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t love those thrifty packets of chocolatey goodness. Sure enough, a quick search reveals that he does quite enjoy them.

As for Masaki, a quick look at his bio reveals that he is enrolled in the School of Agricultural and Life Sciences majoring in Chemistry of Bio-based Materials. Therefore, feeding protein to goldfish doesn’t seem entirely out of his wheelhouse. Perhaps the broadcaster was just being facetious about his actual research.

That’s important to know, because if you happen to want to buff up your own goldfish, you shouldn’t go tossing chunks of hamburger into the bowl. It’ll probably end badly. Instead leave it to the scientist pioneers of tomorrow, like second baseman Hira-chan to find the best way to achieve fins of steel.

In September of 2009, Mizuki Nakano decided that it would be an interesting experiment to try and eat nothing but fruit all day, every day. Conventional wisdom would dictate that eating nothing but fruit would be bad for one’s health given the high sugar content and lack of other nutrients. But Nakano noticed that there was no scientific evidence to back up these beliefs.

So, he set out on gradually converting his diet to the point where he would eat only fruit. He wouldn’t even drink straight water, opting instead to get hydrated from the juices of his sole form of nourishment.

However, days turned to weeks and weeks to years, and Nakano’s little experiment evolved into a full-fledged fruity lifestyle. His eccentric diet eventually landed him on the popular variety show Matsuko’s Unknown World, where he gained national notoriety.

Following this appearance, rumors on the internet began to swirl that Nakano had died, finally succumbing to the malnourishment that a seedy habit like his would supposedly create. However, three years later on 17 April, 2018, Nakano made his triumphant return to the same show, not only to dispel rumors that he had died, but to make a startling revelation.

After brushing aside concerns from host Matsuko Deluxe that he looked a little jaundiced and might be suffering from liver damage, Nakano said that not only has his diet sustained him all these years, but he claimed that it had made him the next step in human evolution.

According to researchers who Nakano says studied him, the complete lack of protein combined with a pure fruit diet have caused certain fungi to grow in his intestines that can convert nitrogen in the air to protein. He says the researchers told him that this is completely unique to Nakano’s body and that he is unlike any other human.

Matsuko responded by saying, “Gross.”

It’s truly a remarkable story, and one that can’t help but stir up wonder and disbelief, as comments show.

“He’s superman?!”
“Prof. Nakano is alive! I was really worried there.”
“Wha?! I don’t believe it!”
“That is a superior body if it can produce protein from thin air.”
“I don’t know if this is good or bad.”
“I guess it makes sense. You are what you eat.”
“I wonder if that’s why gorillas are so huge…”

Nakano’s claim appears to be purely anecdotal, however, and I could not find any peer-reviewed (or non-peer-reviewed for that matter) report of this study that was done on him. However, as Nakano originally noticed back in 2009, there doesn’t seem to be any study that covered the effects of an all-fruit diet at all, so this is uncharted waters.

On the other hand, a quick Google search for “protein deficiency” brings up all kinds of chilling dangers, from the swollen bellies you see in children of developing countries to something that looks like the dragon disease that guy from Game of Thrones got.

It’s not something to take lightly, so until there’s some hard evidence that Mizuki Nakano has evolved into a next-level human, I’d advise against adopting an all-fruit diet. However, if you are looking for some great fruit-centric recipes, he’s definitely a reliable source for those.

In the spirit of exploration, I would try it myself…but living in the land of Sushi Kit-Kats and all-you-can-eat sandwiches, I cannot in good conscience pass those things up.
