Slip-on designs make it easy to swish around the house like a traditional schoolgirl or a cool, modern-day samurai.
There’s no denying that traditional Japanese garments are stylishly beautiful, and we’d love to add more of them to our wardrobes if they weren’t so expensive and heavy to wear.
Here to solve that problem is retail chain Village Vanguard, with the Yuru Hakama (lit. “loose hakama“), which looks identical to the two-piece outfit traditionally worn by samurai and schoolgirls in the Meiji period (1868-1912).

These new designs might look like separates but they’re actually one-piece garments, taking all the fuss out of confusing ties and crossover positioning, which can signify death if done incorrectly. Now you’ll never have to worry about committing a deathly faux-pas again, as all you have to do is slip the clothing over your head and you’re immediately dressed!

While these types of Yuru Hakama have appeared on the market recently, this new range has been especially made for the summer heat, using a faux-hemp cotton material that’s soft to the touch but light and breathable without being see-through. Another first for the range is the fact that it includes men’s styles as well, with a dropped waist and shorter sleeves to differentiate them from the women’s styles.

▼ The Light Gray x Navy for men is said to exude a refined sense of elegance.

▼ The Purple × Dark Grey gives the traditional garment a modern twist, especially when worn with accessories like a hat and glasses.

▼ The Blue x Brown for women combines a cool brown shade with a cool blue that resembles the summer sky.

▼ The Ivory x Mint Green for women offers more subdued shades of soft ivory and refreshing minty green.

The Yuru Hakama is designed to be used as comfortable loungewear, so you can channel a Meiji-era schoolgirl while you study.

▼ And swish about the house like a lazy samurai.

The hakama comes in medium through to extra-large sizes and retails for 9,790 yen (US$92.30). The full range can be purchased online from Village Vanguard, where you can also pick up a traditional wooden notebook and foxy kitsune socks to give your outfit some extra flair.

“I’m all alone in this virtual space every day. And the best way to kill time? Games, of course!”
With YouTube channels being hosted by children and run by people who stick rubber chickens in car tailpipes, it seems like anyone can be a YouTuber… even if they don’t really exist.
Say hello to one of Japanese YouTube’s rising stars: Kizuna Ai, host of A.I.Channel on YouTube. She’s a virtual anime schoolgirl who does pretty much the same things all other YouTubers do – makes funny videos and plays video games.
▼ One of Kizuna Ai’s most popular videos
where she plays the popular game Inside.
If you’ve watched any other YouTube “let’s plays,” then you can tell that Kizuna Ai’s reactions and commentary are pretty spot-on. The animation and voice are very well done, it’s easy to forget that you’re watching an animation and not a real person.
Kizuna Ai’s cute look and fun personality has already earned her almost 200,000 subscribers. While that may seem crazy for a YouTuber who’s not even technically “real,” just taking a look at some more of her videos makes it obvious why people like her so much.
▼ In this video Kizuna Ai tries taking some physical tests to see if her
“hologram-ness” can help her break any records. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
▼ She plays Quick, Draw! to see if she can draw things well enough for Google’s
AI to figure out what it is… and also adorably messes up reading English.
▼ In an attempt to make a friend in the computer-generated oblivion
she lives in, Kizuna Ai strikes up a conversation with senpai AI Siri.
If you want to see more of Kizuna Ai’s videos, be sure to check out her official YouTube channel. It’s only about three months old, but more videos are being posted every few days, and more and more are getting English subtitles.
And if just watching a virtual anime schoolgirl isn’t enough for you, then perhaps you would be interested in a way to live with one in your home?

Just when you thought Japanese commercials couldn’t get any weirder.
Japan’s newest commercial about manners on trains may be quite difficult to get your head around.
The commercial produced by Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co. tells a story of two Japanese schoolgirls who face off for one empty seat on a crowded train carriage. Deathly stares between the girls suddenly turns into an “air chair battle”, which then quickly escalates into a very strange dance battle – carried out to the tune of what sounds like someone beatboxing. The sequence even has one of the girls pull of some pretty bizarre funny faces, for what reason I’m still not sure.
If all of that sounds confusing, don’t worry, the video totally clears it all up. You can check it out here:
▼ Schoolgirl funny face number one

▼ The schoolgirls use a random salaryman as an “air chair”

Eventually, the two girls sprint over to a middle-aged man holding onto a safety handle in the middle of the carriage, and they proceed to use the man as an “air chair”. The man doesn’t seem to appreciate being twerked on by two high school girls and awkwardly brushes them aside. The girls connect to form a two girl “air chair” and then, oh no! The girls fall over and we see legs. I’m sure that was completely unintentional on the part of the commercial producers.
So what was the moral of the story? Well, there are a couple of cutaways toward the end of the commercial of other commuters sitting with legs wide apart or with bags rested on the seat next to them or between their legs. And finally we see all these “bad” commuters tidy themselves up and shift along the seat to make room for the two girls to be able to comfortably sit down. So it turns out the moral of the story is make sure you don’t encroach on the space outside your own sitting zone.
▼ Rude commuters spreading out on seats

A Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co. survey found that the most complained about “bad manners” was the way in which some people sit. The company says they hope the advertisement will be an opportunity to change the way some people think about train etiquette.
A very strange commercial attempting to change the way people think, but it attracted people’s attention (and ours) – and that’s half the battle.
Here are some comments from people who viewed the commercial:
“This is a good ad. Well done Nishi-Nippon Railroad!”
“I was drawn to the long hair of the girl wearing the white shirt.”
“They have their backs against the wall! Do you know what an ‘air chair’ is?”
“This is what I call a Japanese-style ad.”
There have been a few commercials in Japan recently about manners on trains including this controversial ad by Tokyo Metro, which criticized women for applying makeup while riding the train.
Do you think this latest commercial promoting train etiquette will have an effect?

With two colours to choose from, this is the most unique sailor uniform we’ve ever seen!
With so many sailor-style school uniforms on the market these days, now it takes something really special to make you stand out from the crowd. Japanese online retailer Party Paradise has just released a real head-turner to fill your needs, with a creative new twist on the classic sailor suit uniform that incorporates heavenly angel details into its design.

Called the “Angel Sailor Suit”, the outfit uses a “Neofabric” which features an image of a cloudy, pale blue sky. Other details include a soft, pink chiffon scarf that ties up under the neckline, and a scalloped collar which resembles a pair of angel wings, complete with a pink cross in the middle.

▼ The pick-up line “Did you fall from heaven? Because you look like an angel” becomes pretty redundant when you’re dressed like this!

▼ The outfit also comes in pink, for an equally sweet and innocent look.

With the pink shade resembling a vibrant sunset, the embellishments on this style come in aqua green.

▼ The costumes are ideal for bringing an angelic presence to Halloween!

Both styles are currently available from online retailer Party Paradise for 8,630 yen (US$82.82) each, including nationwide delivery. Whether you’re looking to be an angelic schoolgirl, or any number of other cute characters, Party Paradise has a huge variety of costumes on offer to help with all your Halloween costume needs!

Announcements revealed the price point and game details that suggest you’ll soon be able to do more than just tutor a Japanese high school girl in her room.
PlayStation live-streamed its entire 90-minute press conference on YouTube yesterday, and one of the moments that made everyone sit up and take notice was when the new trailer for Bandai Namco’s Summer Lesson appeared on screen.
▼ Take a look at the trailer below.
The trailer begins with Japanese student Hikari Miyamoto rushing over, saying, “Teacher – are you okay? Were you off in a daze?”

The clip goes on to reveal the impressive “Sense of Presence” and “Human Interaction” that players can enjoy while playing the game, which is already one of the most hotly anticipated virtual reality experiences.

The game made news last year when two introductory demos were revealed, wherein the gamer, acting as a tutor, was placed in either the bedroom of a Japanese high school girl or a beachside house occupied by a blonde-haired American student. While there was no mention of the American character at the press conference, a few new reveals were made for the Japanese schoolgirl storyline.
▼ Soon you’ll be able to take her from the house and to the outside world.

▼ There’ll also be options for more intriguing scenarios with the character in the future.

Sold under its official title, Summer Lesson: Hikari Miyamoto Seven Days Room (Basic Game Pack), the game is set to launch alongside PlayStation VR on 13 October for 2,980 yen (US$28.93).

After revealing her big secret last year, the popular schoolgirl is back and she’s undergone some impressive improvements.
Last year, a Japanese schoolgirl called Saya made headlines around the world after it was revealed that she didn’t actually exist. The girl was, in fact, a 3-D computer-generated model with an incredibly life-like appearance that fooled everyone into thinking she was a living, breathing student.

Her creators, husband-and-wife team Yuka and Teruyuki Ishikawa, have continued to work on Saya’s look throughout the year, depicting her in a number of scenarios as they work on creating a movie with her as the star character.

What’s even more impressive than the natural-looking realism of Saya’s character is the fact that the Tokyo-based duo behind her creation are entirely self-taught in the fields of computer graphics and design. While most of their orders are for overseas clients, their work on Saya is a side-project they work on in their free time.

Now they’ve added another layer of realism to the attractive schoolgirl with the “2016 version”, which they revealed via their Twitter account just a few days ago.
pic.twitter.com/kOGcMx96co
— TELYUKA (@mojeyuka) September 9, 2016
Saya now has even more detail, with stunning skin tones that have an incredibly realistic texture. The amazing details extend to the reflection in her irises and even the flyaway strands of hair on her head.

Naturally, Twitter users were blown away by Saya’s new look.
“The level of realism is absolutely amazing!”
“I can’t see anything but a real girl in this image.”
“Wow – she’s evolved even more than last time!”
“I can’t wait to hear her voice and see how she moves.”
We shouldn’t have to wait too long to see Saya come to life on screen, with the creators revealing that they’re working towards debuting the character at an autumn exhibition, having already completed the motion capture process last month.
先週はモーションキャプチャの撮影でした。ツークン研究所と共同でSAYAを一人の女の子としてどこまで練り上げていけるのか研究制作中です。もう少ししたら色々と発表して行きたいですっ(•̀ᴗ•́)。 pic.twitter.com/AMloE8LZlB

Video’s first question is tough, but the second is almost impossible.
Don’t you just hate it when you’re on your way home after a long day at school and you suddenly get ambushed by a legion of katana-wielding businessmen? I mean, as if your schedule isn’t packed enough with trigonometry homework, LINE messages from friends to respond to, and important RocketNew24 articles to read.
Still, when you do find yourself in such a situation, the only thing to do is fight back, like the schoolgirl in this video who whips out a sword of her own and meets her attackers head-on. One after another she dispatches her adversaries, but not only is this an awesome display of melee combat, it’s also a quiz.

“How many people has this high school girl slashed?” the video asks as it opens, although in this case the Japanese used, kiru, could be more accurately translated as “killed” or “defeated.” In other words, the challenge is to count how many foes she takes down in the video’s runtime, regardless of what sort of killing blow is involved.
Think you can keep up with her rapid-fire strikes? Then click the play button and don’t blink!

The key to getting the right answer is to focus and keep your cool. If you let your concentration waver from the surprise of an armor-clad samurai showing up like a video game boss for the fight’s climax, you might momentarily forget that he was preceded by 99 salarymen, bringing the schoolgirl’s streak of victories to a nice, round 100 when she strikes him down.

But while zeroing in on the tip of the girl’s sword will help you get the right answer to the first question the video poses, too much tunnel vision means you’ll get tripped up by the trick question that comes next: Where were the four kunoichi (female ninjas) that also appear in the video?

Don’t feel bad if you didn’t even notice one the first time around. We didn’t either, and it took us an embarrassingly large number of rewatches to find them even when they were all we were looking for.
If you’re stumped, the ninja can be seen at the 0:00, 0:12, 0:57, and 1:45 marks. Yep, there’s one in the video’s very first frame!
Give up? Then let’s go on a kunoichi photo safari together.
▼ Blue kunoichi (0:00)

Miss Blue can also be seen later in the video, and the camera pans right in front of her face.

The white kunoichi (0:12) displays the most athleticism.

Like the blue kunoichi, the black kunoichi (0:58) is hidden in plain sight, and also holding a negi (long green onion) for some reason.

And finally, serving as the opposite bookend to the blue kunoichi’s first-frame appearance, the pink kunoichi drops the camouflage sheet she’s been hiding behind as the kill tally of 100 is shown.

So who’s responsible for this eye-opening display of the effects of selective attention? Online video service Hikari TV (the same company behind the awesome rock-climbing schoolgirl ad from last summer), reminding us that the higher the resolution in the videos you watch, the more detail you’ll be able to pick up.
Of course, some may argue that this test is rigged, since not only does it keep the second question a secret until the very end, but also makes no prior mention of the fact that kunoichi will be involved. To that, though, we’re going to say the same thing our parents said to us when we were growing up: No matter the situation, always assume that there will be ninja.

Fellas, want to know how to spend the perfect day as a high school girl in Japan? It involves selfies, food pics, purikura, shopping, crepes, and of course, the new spring Boku Sera sailor suit uniform!
Schoolgirls in Japan get to do a lot of fun things, like wear cute uniforms and be as kawaii as they want without anyone questioning their decision. After all, if schoolgirls can’t be super-cute who can?
But guys get a raw deal. Their uniforms tend to be a little more on the austere side, and even in Japan, which is generally cool with girly stuff, it’s still kind of eyebrow-raising to see a young dude enjoying a yummy crepe while snapping a selfie, or taking photo booth pictures that make them look like they’re wearing extra makeup. Sure, they can (and do) do these things, but generally in an ironic way and with one or more girls present.
But our reporter, Seiji, still feels bitter about having to grow up as a boy and therefore miss out on the whole high school girl experience. But since the introduction of the Boku Sera range of schoolgirl uniform-like outfits for men he feels validated in his choice to experience schoolgirl life as a middle-aged dude. And since he’d already purchased the new spring Boku Sera uniform (for professional research purposes, of course), he decided to put it on and make a day of it, schoolgirl style!
First, he enlisted the help of some of our female staff to make sure that his sailor suit was properly adjusted for a day of fun.

▼ A quick commemorative snap before hitting the train. Don’t let Seiji’s deadpan expression fool you – inside he was a squee-ing ball of schoolgirl glee, primed and ready to forage for sources of sugar and really sparkly hair accessories.

On the train, he did what any modern schoolgirl would do – checked his social medias.

Soon, he arrived at his destination: Tokyo’s fashion mecca of Harajuku!

Naturally, he made a beeline straight for Takeshita Street, which, with its affordable teen fashion boutiques, plentiful crepe stands, and purikura booths, is the perfect schoolgirl hang-out spot. Would Seiji blend in seamlessly with the crowds, or would he be cruelly shunned for possessing a Y chromosome and being several years past his high school graduation?

To Seiji’s relief, nobody seemed too terribly shocked at his outfit. The general attitude seemed to be that if this grown man wanted to wear a sailor suit, that was his business.

But first, since our man Seiji had adopted the fashion of a growing girl, he needed sustenance! Luckily, Takeshita Street is also fully equipped with a plentiful array of restaurants popular with teens. He considered chowing down on a beef bowl, but in the end decided that any style-savvy schoolgirl would opt for spaghetti instead. After all, Italian cuisine is the last word in chic. Or at least it has a bit more cool-factor than something a middle-aged man would eat like a pile of meat and rice.

After the obligatory food pic (careful, watch the sauce!) Seiji needed a replenishing cigarette to steel himself for the remainder of the day, which consisted of a gruelling schedule of selfies and sweets. Sometimes this whole schoolgirl routine can be draining…

After his smoke break, he decided to sweeten up with a delicious crepe from the nearby Baskin Robbins. Opting for a strawberry cheesecake ice cream crepe, he even attempted to daintily eat the entire thing with a spoon, like a schoolgirl would do. When that proved ineffective, he eventually shoved the whole thing into his face. Again, like a schoolgirl would do.

After the crepe, Seiji realised that his outfit lacked one vital schoolgirl addition – accessories! He quickly impulse-bought an adorable pair of kitty ears.

Kitty ears in place, it was time for purikura! Here’s Seiji posing up a storm.

Every schoolgirl knows that the best part of purikura is doodling on the snaps at the end!

How kawaii! And that lipgloss is on point!

Here’s Seiji’s sticker set in full!

The face of pure joy!

Only one thing left to do – it’s selfie time!

A few quick taps and it’s up on Instagram!
Hopefully Seiji’s lovely outing as a super-kawaii high school girl has brought a little joy to your day. As for Seiji, he found the effort of maintaining cuteness and girlishness for a full day extremely gruelling and immediately headed back to RocketNews24 HQ to relax with coffee, cigarettes, and a manly belching contest with the other male writers (or something along those lines, anyway.)

Hello Kitty loves to cosplay and this time she’s dressing up as a badass schoolgirl with a machine gun.
When it comes to playing dress-up, there’s nobody Hello Kitty can’t emulate. We’ve seen her as Sadako, from the hit horror flick The Ring, and as a super robot from the anime series Mazinger Z. Now, for the first time, she’ll be carrying a machine gun. And it’s all in honour of a new movie called Sailor Suit and Machine Gun: Graduation, which will be released on 5 March this year.

The movie is a sequel to the 1981 movie Sailor Suit and Machine Gun, which was based on a fictional novel about a teenage schoolgirl who becomes the head of a yakuza clan. She fights members of rival clans with a submachine gun, all while dressed in her sailor-style school uniform.

The highly anticipated new movie stars Japanese idol singer Kanna Hashimoto as Izumi Hoshi, the sailor-suit wearing main character of the film.

To mark the movie’s release, the “Hoshi Izumi x Hello Kitty” collaboration will see Sanrio’s adorable character dressed up in a sailor suit, sporting a wig and carrying a machine gun, just like the female protagonist of the film. The team behind the project mentions that Hello Kitty is cosplaying, which means her pink-coloured gun is actually a toy replica, and not a real weapon. A special line-up of goods featuring the cute image, including notepads, ballpoint pens, pencils, clear files, stickers and towels, will be available from 5 March at movie theatres screening the film.

Watch out sailor sisters! There’s a new line of sailor-themed clothing on sale and this time it’s the boys’ turn to come out and play. There won’t be any trousers or navy hats here though, because the only thing masculine about these clothes are the bodies that will be going into them.
It’s the Boku Sera (“I’m a Sailor”) range, which uses the Japanese male pronoun boku to highlight exactly what sets the clothes apart from all others we’ve seen before: these are girls’ sailor-style school uniforms, only now they’re built for male bodies.
The unusual roomwear items come from Bibi Lab, a design house which specialises in researching unique ideas and bringing them to life, no matter how wacky they seem. Previously, they’ve given us the full-body mosquito net jumpsuit; the snuggie that covers everything except your hands, nose and mouth, and even life-sized human-shaped pillows. Now they’re taking fleece to a place it’s never been before with two special man-sized sailor-style schoolgirl outfits.

The Pure White design features the blue and white colour scheme most commonly associated with Japanese schoolgirls, but if black is more your style, you can opt for a Darkness Black number. Both are available from Japan’s largest e-commerce site Rakuten Ichiba for 6,880 yen (US$57.71) each.

Bibi Lab designed these outdoor styles as “roomwear” items for a number of specific reasons. Firstly, it’s a great way for men to see what it’s like to wear women’s clothing. While some men have no problem with parading around in public in schoolgirl uniforms, more discreet gentlemen might prefer to dress up in the comfort of their homes, away from prying eyes.

And when you’re lazing about at home, you want to be dressed for comfort, which means you don’t want to be squeezing into tight, ill-fitting ladies clothes. Bibi Lab has you covered, by specifically designing their female outfits for the male figure.
▼As long as you fall between a medium or large size, according to the Japanese male sizing system.

Bibi Lab is also singing the virtues of wearing women’s clothing, pointing out that the roomy nature of the one-piece provides “zero stress” around the tummy area, meaning you can let it all hang out while remaining comfortably warm and covered at the same time.

The fleece material increases the comfort level of the clothing so you can lounge around with the lightest of ease. Now that we think about it, fleece uniforms in real schools might actually work, especially in those freezing Japanese classrooms during wintertime.

And for those after some girly details, a pair of knee high socks are included, perfect for showing off the much coveted strip of exposed thigh between skirt and sock.

In their usual light-hearted manner, Bibi Lab also claims that their product can reduce stress. If you’ve had a bad day, or if you’re worried about getting older, simply slip into the comfy sailor suit and all your worries will fade away.
▼ Because sometimes the stress relief of a no-pants lifestyle makes you feel like fireworks are going off behind you.

And if you’re a girl who never got to wear the distinctive schoolgirl outfit growing up, this is your chance to make lost dreams come true!

▼ From reading to gaming to playing with teddy bears, male models show just how comfortable life in a fleece sailor suit can be.

The video includes a cameo at the end.
The demo uses Sony‘s Project Morpheus virtual reality headset to simulate interactions with a girl. (The demo featured a Japanese-speaking high school girl last year.)
Tekken series director Katsuhiro Harada explains the interactions in another video last year:
As producer and chief director, he explains in the video that the goal behind Summer Lesson was to make the game’s character recognize the player’s existence. This is because in normal games, even if the player recognizes the character, the character will never do the same for the player. He adds that within the game, if you look away from the character too much, the character will get upset, or if you get too close to her, she will be surprised. Harada also explains that he wanted to create an interactive and realistic enviornment, in which actual nervousness may arise from the player.
When asked why he and his team created the game, he explains that he wanted the news of game to create a large buzz, due to it making virtual reality available to a wide audience. He also added that he wanted the amusement of the game to be spread by verbal communication. Also, Harada and his team worked to create a system that would connect to the future.
As a message to players, Harada commented that the game and its use of the head-mounting display is only the first step of this technology. Harada added that the team is currently developing new contents using the same technology, and that in ten or fifteen years, the technology will have progressed to an amazing level.

Last weekend, shoppers at Q’s Mall in the Abeno district of Osaka were treated to an appearance by this (unidentified) middle-aged man dressed in the typical garb of a Japanese junior school student. Unfazed by the public gaze, he posed for pictures and smiled for shoppers who paused to take in his… unusual choice of attire.
The man appears to be modeling the traditional bright yellow hat (worn to make tiny students more visible to drivers on their walk to school), as well as the ubiquitous “randoseru” backpack in a fetching shade of fuchsia. He rounds off his ensemble with a pair of teeny-tiny gym shorts, resembling the sort worn by junior high school students during P.E (in the UK we called ’em gym knickers). He has accessorized with a bold choice of patterned knee socks, a hot-pink belt and a little yellow body pouch.

Now, we have no idea why this fellow decided to parade in public dressed as a little girl, but he certainly seems to be enjoying the attention and the shoppers are getting a giggle out of it too, so who are we to judge? Who knows, perhaps he might join forces with other wacky dressers Sailor Suit Old Man and Ladybeard?

The photos above were uploaded by Twitter user yu_ki0615 who was on the scene. The tweet prompted a flood of responses from netizens who were both shocked and amused.

What do you think of the man’s ensemble? Is it kawaii or is it kimoi (gross?) Or perhaps it’s a little bit kimokawa (a mixture of both?) …

Perhaps you remember Ladybeard from our previous post a couple of weeks ago introducing the cross-dressing bearded pro-wrestler, performer, heavy metal singer and party rocker. Well, it would seem that Ladybeard recently met up with another iconic cross-dresser in Japan, the “Sailor Suit Old Man”.
A hairy burly man and a balding old man in schoolgirl uniforms may sound like an absolute turn off, but they looked so happy, we couldn’t help but think they actually look somewhat cute. Here’s the most epic schoolgirl combi in history!
If you haven’t heard of the “Sailor Suit Old Man” before, this cheerful elderly bearded fellow, Hideaki Kobayashi, made his first public appearance in a sailor suit uniform in 2010 at an art and design event known as Design Festa. Kobayashi, who is a photographer and producer, had an exhibition booth at the event and upon hearing that Candy Milky (a famous cross-dresser in Japan) was coming to visit his booth, decided to put on a schoolgirl look to welcome his guest. His cross-dressing efforts paid off as he instantly became a sensation at the event.

Since then, Kobayashi began participating in the annual event in his schoolgirl outfit, and gradually got the hang of it. Now, he dresses up in his signature sailor suit uniform on most weekends when he heads out. His cheerful disposition and enthusiastic response whenever he’s asked for a photo have contributed to his fame, and it’s said that he gets photo-mobbed by the public wherever he goes. There’s even an urban legend that if you meet him on the streets, happiness is bound to come your way.

So, what do you think happens when the “Sailor Suit Old Man” meets Ladybeard? As unbelievable as this may sound, schoolgirls start squealing at how cute they look together. Here are the pictures taken of the irresistible “schoolgirl” duo when they strolled down the streets of Harajuku in Japan!

The happy vibes they give off definitely brighten up a chilly winter’s day! We have to admit, we definitely wouldn’t mind a snapshot with these vibrant personalities!
